Finally getting around to new episodes of Shield Hero and Bookworm. Looks like Billy Kametz was replaced as Naofumi. Not shocking, given he was diagnosed with cancer. Not sure about the new guy yet. Still gonna suck not hearing Kametz while the rest of the cast is the same.

New girl is annoying in how "woe is me" she acts. Fucking hell.

Tiger and Bunny done, so Netlfix is also done. CR already has way too much fucking stuff, and I don't think I've touched Netflix for anything except Castlevania, Live Action Bebop, and Tiger and Bunny for like a year. Time to save up for that fucking sports streaming service in a month.

Violet Evergarden says you should change that. Clannad too, but it takes forever and a day for that to hit you. I remember both sneaking up on me thinking, "I mean, these were good, but holy crap." The ending of one episodes of both shows had me crying for different reasons.

Haruhi had the Endless Eight. I have never forgiven them for that. I should give Kobayashi another chance some day.

After I rewatch Tiger and Bunny, I may dump Netflix. $15 a month for anime options I never watch and the lone Castlevania season a year is kinda steep when CR has...thousands of shows already.

Ayesha has a "darker" vibe to it as far as Atelier games go. I remember enjoying that and Shallie quite a bit because they veered into a bit more of a dystopian setting. Now, this is by ATELIER standards. Atelier tends to stay as cutesy and non-offensive as JRPGs tend to get. The allure is in all the crafting. I just wish they'd go back to dubbing the franchise. I haven't played anything since Firis because of that...freaking jerks.

Also, rewatching Tiger & Bunny before it goes back into Netflix jail. Always loved that show. It's cool they have a second season out.

Spy x Family is very good. Only two episodes in, and it's one of the best things I've watched in months.

Finally done with Ace Attorney. The anime did a great job retelling 3-5, but overall, felt like an intense speed read of the entire three games in the time it takes to play the first one. I suppose that was the nature of the medium. But the visual novel being super slow versus the anime being way too brief? The anime isn't the best way to experience the content. Maya being super fucking mousey (to a grating degree) drove me mad too. Mostly because other actors used for Maya have been less higher pitched, yet still got across the "she's bubbly and energetic" bit. Still happy I enjoyed it.

Time to find something new. SpyxFamily might be next if CR has a dub version on it already.

Something about the 4th or 5th episode started dragging the story in weird directions. Like they had a full OVA story arc and then fell off a weird cliff to stretch to 12-13 episodes.

I wanted to like Sunday Without God.

Interesting macabre horror/espionage concepts at play. The interplay of a lot of different spies/government mercs unfolds in a slow, disturbing twisted tale. Sydney is a charismatic villain for Ashley to pursue (similar to Sephiroth leading Cloud). I would have liked to see a better, less repetitive game surround this meaty story...but oh well.

Saw a Konohana Kitan rec and would also like to rep this series. I'm a sucker for yokai type shows, and this one was just nice and fun.

It really doesn't have a branching narrative to justify the interest in Catherine. It crowbars some admitted SMT weirdness to make that work. It suffers when you think, "Just say you're dating someone for fuck sake." You have to suspend disbelief that Katherine wouldn't just dump him because Vincent is a shady, sad sack loser. Full Body at least tries to justify it a bit more.

Rin is an interesting case. The scenes Rin gets are some of the best romance the game actually has. Erica being wise to Vincent's bullshit and reactions is some of the most effecting in the entire game, at least until later on anyway. It doesn't feel completely crowbarred in (which is a definite fear). Still, there's suspension of disbelief at play, and really fucks up at the end if you choose Rin's True Ending.

Catherine on the whole has a unique idea at play. The game is brought down when trying to stick landings or asking you to believe that anyone but Rin sees...ANYTHING in Vincent's pathetic ass. Katherine can easily do better, and Catherine is a plot device. So yes, suspension of disbelief in the weirdness is necessary. I say SoD over and over because for such a grounded concept, there's the weird SMT/Persona-ness of it you can't really take at face value, but is still fun if you can shut your brain off.

I'm not expecting it to have the same impact or anything (trying to cram 60 hours into 25 eps...lord no). That's kinda why I've avoided it for so long. But I figured what the hell. This is what happens when all the other things I wanted to watch weren't dubbed yet.

Gonna try the Phoenix Wright anime adaptation. The first episode wasn't too bad. It just feels so odd seeing them have any animation like...at all.

One of the other reasons I can't do much is other window sill is already set.

The subtle humor (any joke that is kind of a throwaway line and not the in your face "SNOW MY GOD" kids puns made this decent to get through. Elba and Carrey made each scene they were in amazing, specifically towards the end. Though Agent Stone continues to be a nice lackey. Sonic is appropriately annoying, so I started wishing Knuckles would fucking destroy him to shut him the fuck up. So...yeah, they have Sonic down.

Tails and the human characters are just..."there." But the human characters gotta go. I would hope they get away from the human characters completely for the third (save for Robotnik and Stone).

Visual novel. I think you can actually die if you fuck up some story stuff too much, but that's all I know.

The story is fifty flavors of fatalist stupid, trying to both not be CT (the writer admits it wasn't meant to be tied to it), but also shoehorning things with a lead pipe. The battle system is a less shit FF8/not as fun Xenogears combo hybrid (it's a very weird thing).

The music though? Fucking godly.

Yes, because this is working out for Mana so far. They've gotten as far as remaking or remastering. I'm not going to hold my breath until it happens. Chrono is their new "in case of Emergency break glass" option with FF7R actually a thing.

Ff7R is lucky is is dripping in nostalgia. I doubt I would play it otherwise.

They really shouldn't give any money to anyone not making a decent FF product (whenever that ever happens anymore), a Bravely/Octopath low budget affair that is low risk, or Dragon Quest. Anything Square does that isn't what they or a competent outside source (Yoko Taro) knows how to do, they just seem to be throwing darts at a wall.

I remember dumping it after 2-3 episodes. One of the dub actors (Carrie Savage) even said she hated doing it about 5-10 years later. I don't blame her. It's a fanservice show first, and a derpy "Let's use weird martial arts lingo" show second.

It feels so weird, since Funi was a staple for 20 some years after ADV went belly up and turned into Sentai. Just feels odd calling it Crunchyroll now. I don't think they'd up and not keep using their Texas site, given how many people live there. Some moved to LA sure, but not all of them. Though, since COVID, you can practically record from anywhere if you have the right equipment. I suppose everyone will just record from home from now on anyway.

The soundtrack is free to listen to on Youtube...just saying.

You play this once to realize it's too "smart" for its own good, and then remember the music is making up half if not more of how good it actually is.

-1 for Wilhelm being a wet noodle primary antagonist.

-2 for everything involving Shion that is so batshit dumb, only Star Ocean 3 tops it for all time stupid. Shion has deadly headaches from U-DO, a thing that only Jr. has any plot relevance to as a concept. She does the about face BOSS FIGHT because Kevin exists. But more than anything, the balls of this franchise to claim the Gnosis, an omnipresent extraterrestrial threat from god knows where, the thigns that have terrorized the party all three games, came because Shion's mom died? Even if it was an alternate reality bullshit explanation to exert some power or control over some weapon or whatever, that is pretty dumb. It also doesn't save Shion goes from overworked and snarky, but likeable in 1 and sorta 2, to completely bitchy and unlikeable in III.

Now that I think of it some more, -.5 points for being forced to resolve EVERY plot thread in about one dungeons worth of a boss rush because "final game of a trilogy." They did a way better job of trying to give everyone stuff to do (cause they had way more game time to actually work with), but fucking hell. Margulis and Pellegri get practically shit on for fuck all they got to do in the first two games. NOPE! We gotta finish the game.

I only watched that for like 5 minutes, so...maybe I was right to.

It is pretty wonky plot wise, since the mechanics make for non-linear storytelling. But this was a spiritual successor to CT, and it does a good job staying heavy and mature. The narrative has high stakes, given the situation that could have been played way less straight if it wanted to.
