Currently, our small fries are at $1.69, which hasn't changed in a long time - so I think our economy is doing ok.

looking at a map, i think if there was a cut along the northern border of Texas (Oklahoma) that cut west through the southern border of Utah and some wiggly~woo through California... leaving New Mexico, Southern Californa, Arizona and West Texas in Mexican control; that'd be not only more equitable it would still be in line with Manifest Destiny's plan to take the west coast.
