Addressing a bunch of comments in one reply: to clarify, the goal would have been to get it over the 50 vote threshold such that removing the filibuster would at least have been a serious option for overcoming the blockage. You'll hear them talk about the word republic and how in their view, that doesn't necessarily have much democracy involved and the Constitution is there to put a cap on pesky asks like rights and equality.

I cringe anytime someone mentions their heart in a statement like this. It's a telltale sign that they don't think they need to behave in a good way to be good. Like being good isn't about what you do, it's about how you feel in your "heart" in some convenient, unobservable, and unfalsifiable way.

When you act cruelly, but give people your heart, you're not doing anything but being cruel, no matter how big, open, soft or full your heart is.

I'm not sure why people are trying to act like disorders don't affect your behavior. They literally do, that's why they're disorders. If the disorder didn't result in specific negative behaviors (in the absence of treatment or coping strategies), it wouldn't have been identified and none of us would be talking about it.

This isn't just something I've seen with borderline personality disorder, it's an attitude I've seen toward mental health struggles in general. I get that people are trying to reduce the pathological level of stigma we have in our society towards anyone with any mental health issues. We've seen it in this topic, people have talked about people with BPD in a way that you can't really talk about any other group of people. But it's counterproductive because it kind of implicitly concedes that if you have a mental illness that raises the likelihood of you doing X and you at any point do X, then maybe you're unworthy after all.

BPD is an illness that specifically creates a greatly increased risk of volatile and abusive relationships. That has to be acknowledged and accepted up front so that people with that diagnosis can be accepted for the human beings they are, accommodated, helped, and loved.

Once that is acknowledged, it has to be understood that these bad outcomes are by no means guaranteed. You may have met multiple people with BPD that is mild or that they are actively working to control. It is never acceptable to categorically discriminate against a group of people, unless there is a 1:1 ratio between that group's behavior and their membership in the group. It is just as unacceptable to compare human beings with agency and the potential for change to bullets, trains, animals, and other dehumanizing and destructive things.

Seems like the people who said the right wing is worse than any caricature of them were right.

How are people still so naive, even at this late hour? There's no floor, no brakes, no limiting principle for the right. It's only what power they can exercise without ending up in Gitmo, or worse, being excluded from their elite social circles.

I don't know how you can read the leaked opinion and observe their actions over the past few decades and conclude they won't try to relitigate every social issue they've lost on since Eisenhower. They absolutely will.

They've always known that their 'judicial philosophy" leads to incredibly regressive results. Scalia has been directly asked about how we get Brown v. Board under their combo of "originalism and textualism". He had no answer. Because it never could. And they're more than fine with that.

They know their ideas lead to baked in oppression and that's what they want and have wanted the entire time. This is simply an open declaration of that. They no longer feel the need to hide it. They know our political system as it currently exists cannot punish them for saying it out loud.

Conservatives sure seem to love assuring people they're not going to do X horrible thing and that anyone who suggests they will is a hysterical fear monger, all along planning to do X at the first opportunity. An entire political movement built on gaslighting, grifting, and keeping the "bad people" in their place.

The only thing left to do is to defeat them at this point. They've shown their true colors a thousand times over. They must be completely politically and culturally sidelined because this is what they do with power when they get it.

Or Public Service Loan forgiveness, especially prior to this administration. It's always a bad idea and never gives the benefits it's allegedly supposed to provide. The people who are going to freak out about handouts are still going to do that, even if you restrict the forgiveness into nothingness.

the point of student loan forgiveness is to help people struggling to put a roof over their heads and food on the table

I thought it was out of recognition that having incredibly inflated and unshakeable debt imposed on people who performed the pro social act of getting educated (and their families) and are just starting out in life is unjust and nonsensical. It's not an act of charity.

This would doubly screw me, yet I still support the idea of loan forgiveness.

Still, restricting the potential reach based on broad categorizations like "medical or law" makes no sense though. Someone working for a private public interest law firm would get no relief under that plan. Or someone who chooses to become a nurse practitioner in an undeserved part of Detroit.

No one is saying Biden shouldn't forgive loans at all if he's not gonna forgive their specific loans, we're saying slicing and dicing this into a means tested bureaucratic program rather than a general debt cancelation doesn't make sense for a lot of reasons. It's not gonna have whatever upside Biden thinks it will from reduced backlash. The backlash will be created by right wing media and concern trolls and it's coming regardless. The question is how many people get left behind.

I think I've been forced to reach the conclusion that conservatives are simply people who ritually, systematically fail to understand important things in a specific pattern. For some it's maliciousness, for others it's an act, and it could be pure ignorance. You never know.

To not understand why a billionaire buying the website that essentially acts as the public square and news delivery service for much of the world, with the explicit intention of changing the rules of that website to favor a right wing vision of free speech absolutism....If you don't understand why that would raise some eyebrows, I legit don't know what to tell you. It's especially common with the Candace Owens/Thomas Sewell types, but it's becoming increasingly common with trans people and people who allegedly regret their transitions and say they did it out of social pressure are the only ones worth listening to or even mentioning on the issue of transition.

That's not to say this doctor isn't entitled to their views and concerns, but it's very telling how the concern of one person is being gleefully picked up by right wing news sources and groups to push a very specific and inaccurate agenda and how people like TC and every conservative and transphobe on here is using identical tactics to when a black person says there's no racism.

The ideology of one of the two major parties of the US towards trans people is that blatant discrimination should be allowed against them based on both religious and secular grounds, in education, in public accommodations, employment, housing etc.

They want zero accessible information or education about the possibility of being trans or how to safely and happily live as a trans person. They're going as far as to characterize such information as grooming, extending the idea that LGBT people are pedophiles to people who just want to even acknowledge their existence. They don't want young people to know that there's any option to live as anything other than cis, regardless of the damage and death that will lead to.

There's currently a push all across the country in the courts and legislatures to take away trans rights in every facet of society, using religious rights (right wing Christian supremacy) as the tip of the spear.

Now we're seeing open calls for violence against both trans people and their allies because both have been demonized enough to where that's not enough to disqualify you from public life anymore, it gets you cheered or defended in some circles.

Instead of focusing on how TC is "doom posting" you should recognize how a vulnerable group is being made one of the primary villains of public life for political gain and acknowledge that this is an incredibly scary time that could get much worse.

A lot of people here explicitly support this type of thing. It's popular among people of the fascist mindset.

This is simply incorrect. What Nixon did in Southeast Asia alone at his and Kissinger's personal direction likely killed hundreds of thousands to millions and wounded and displaced many more. What they did is still killing children through unexploded ordinance to this day. Again, the guy committed treason to extend a war AND win an election, not just to win an election. Even if you only count American deaths, which you absolutely shouldn't, that conspiracy led to thousands of additional deaths and injuries. Nixon also created the conditions for and then gave aid to Pol Pot, causing several million more deaths in Cambodia.

The only way someone could even begin to say Trump is worse is to completely discount his impacts outside of the US. Nixon in the modern US wouldn't have resigned because the Republican Party has rapidly decayed since and in large part because of Nixon's politics of grievance, corruption, resentment, impunity, and weaponizing of power.

Nixon, Johnson, Jackson, Bush, and even Reagan are worse than Trump in the long run, unless Trump leads directly to a straight up fascist next time.

Jackson directly committed genocide.

Bush killed and displaced millions based on outright lies.

Johnson allowed the worst elements of American culture to fester which caused basically every bad thing afterwards related to race, and many of the bad things not related to race.

Nixon committed outright treason multiple times including prolonging a war that killed countless Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian people, facilitated genocides in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, supported right wing dictatorships all over the world, and permanently damaged faith in government. Watergate isn't even in the top 5-7 worst things he did. I urge people to really look into Nixon, the man was a goddamn monster.

This isn't to say that Trump wasn't a catastrophe, but to say he's the worst is to discount just how bad many of our other Presidents were. He's Nixon, just less competent and with a far smaller domestic and international impact.
