I wish I could like Metroid Dread. It's a good game on its own merits but it has absolutely none of the elements I want from a Metroid game. I've really gotta play AM2R, I feel like that one will be more my speed.

What, you didn't like old classics like "it's chapter 8x and here's a guy that ORKOs your entire team and is basically immune to physical attacks" and "you can't hit this guy", the latter of which is extra funny because you know I'm talking about Binding Blade but you don't know which of seven different guys I might mean?
Sounds more like Conquest tbh, thank God for uhhh, Leo I think, whoever has the skill that lowers enemy evade just by being near them

FFX has a great battle system but I wish the bosses were balanced better. Most are stupidly easy with like 1 or 2 that are huge jumps in difficulty. I guess that's pretty normal for JRPGs though.

I was skeptical too but the Deck is much more comfortable to hold than the Switch is, despite being bigger. I haven't weighed them but I feel like the Deck is also lighter than the Switch somehow, which helps.

It's really making me think I should invest into one of those Hori split pads for the switch. Maybe my whole issue is just that the joy-cons suck as handles.

Oxenfree beaten

I got the same results that Seanchan did. Apparently I torpedoed Ren and Nona's chances immediately while trying not to. Whoops.

Overall I thought it was cool, though I can't help but think it'd have been better as an animated film, or even a VN. Anything that takes out the filler of walking around incredibly slowly. I also feel like it didn't really stick the landing. The ending feels like a weird mix of contrivances to both let the characters succeed but also to screw them over. So everything goes perfectly for Alex somehow and she closes the portal and escapes, but then there's the stinger revealing they're still in the time loop because, uh, reasons. And yeah, definitely can't be bothered to play through it again for the secret ending.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair (Steam)

This is a pretty fun 2D platformer, another DKC-like. The goal of the game is to finish one extra-long level (the Impossible Lair) with multiple bosses, and you can challenge that level at any time. Each bee you rescue from the other stages gives you an extra hit on the Impossible Lair, up to 48 + the 1 hit you get normally.

I needed all of them! I mean, I feel like I could have just ground it out until I could do it without. I've done harder levels in platformers, like idk White Palace. But it was still tricky and the other levels were fun so I went and got all the bees anyway, which makes the whole thing substantially easier.

Compared to Kaze and the Wild Masks I'm not sure which is the better DKC-like. Initially I would have said Kaze but I spent like 18 hours on YL, not sure I'd have been game to play Kaze that long. They're both good, in any case.

...Incidentally, 100%ing this game means beating the Impossible Lair without any bees and uh, I'll pass on that one.

It's much more about the game setting up very intentionally limited chapters with specific units for consideration. Strategy first, RPG second, at least IMO.
I'm cool with this approach and in some senses even prefer it, but I think it would work better if characters with poor availability got a level boost when they rejoined. Some would still be pretty unusable because they're bad even when they join, but it would at least mean you can take e.g. Leonardo to the final chapters without having to put in incredible effort.

I guess a modern remake might just fix it by including a way to grind like FE8 or Awakening, though I'd prefer a solution that is... not that.

I think I'm also on the RD > PoR boat, but I really wish RD put in more effort to let you use whatever units you want. Even in hard games like FE6 the terrible characters are usable, but it's practically impossible to use someone like Vika in RD.

The line I remember is fully not here so either they changed it, it was a different review, or I'm remembering wrong. I remember pretty clearly a line like "if even one ally dies it's an instant game over" but it's possible I'm just remembering wrong, so I apologize.

Offspring Fling (Steam)

Wow I've had this game in my library for a long time! It's a very cute puzzle platformer, which is not a genre I particularly like so I'm not sure why I keep playing them. The puzzles were pretty easy and the levels that required good timing with platforming were surprisingly hard (probably because I was using a joystick instead of dpad). There are more levels if you beat the record time for each stage but uh, no thanks.

I do want a plushie of the main character though. EXTREMELY cute and huggable looking.

Milk outside a bag of milk outside a bag of milk (Steam)

Way higher production values than Milk Inside (to which this is a straight continuation), but I'm not sure I like it more. For one thing, getting the 5 different endings is pretty tedious because it's just based on arbitrarily doing more or less in the point-and-click adventure segment. Overall I find this duology really interesting though as stories that really, really, really do not romanticize mental illness.

If you're wondering about the title, it's about wanting to be free from your physical body but still be the same person -- like milk outside a bag of milk. But it also just references how the first game is first-person from the girl's perspective, and this one is more VN-style looking at her from the outside.

Ryoma's helmet IS very stupid yes

I think a couple factors help 3H. The portraits for sure, but also ditching the academy designs in the second half really saves it. Using class designs for in battle was also a great choice. Like it feels a little lazy but it definitely helps with immersion. Even then there are some really awful designs. I know it's a low hanging fruit but god does f!Byleth's design suck.

Sure but Fates was 2 games ago. They didn't have to go all the way back to RD (though yes I'd have preferred that), they just needed to stay the course after Echoes and 3H.

Also, I think Ryoma's design is substantially better than like 80% of the ones in Engage. *shrug*
