That game and it's sequel broke me so that I became numb to most horror games. I still love horror games with good gameplay mechanics they are just more of a flavor than something meant to scare me now. Kind of jealous I've never got to play Silent Hill games or the Fatal Frame games since aren't readily available for PC. I guess I could get an emulator. I still have to play Alien Isolation. Surprised nobody's mentioned Amnesia Dark Descent or Penumbra. Also if anyone's interested in games that aren't strictly AAA 3D games, I have loads that I love from different genres including shooters and point and clicks/etc. Retro horror shooters:
Point and Clicks:
Tormentum has gorgeous art inspired by the works of H. R. Giger and Zdzisaw Beksisk and takes place in a dark grim fantasy world, a nice short but great game. Others:
Darkwood is dark fantasy horror about a village in The Polish people's Republic where strange circumstances have the forest growing so rampantly nobody can escape and reach the outside world. The tone is beyond amazing. And the gameplay is fantastic having you scavenge for supplies and explore during the daytime and come back at night to a safe house because YOU WILL DIE if you aren't inside at night. Even then things will break into your house at night and you have to push up furniture against the windows and doors. The art is fantastic and there's so many screwed up mutated things that were people or animals. PS: Okay I remembered a game that has scared me since Dead Space. The Forest is seriously terrifying, especially the underground caves. The game drops you on an island in an airplane crash where cannibals kidnap your son and you have to find him. The game plays like a survival base builder game though it's so much more than just that. The game has one of the best AIs in all of gaming with the cannibals having patrol routes and varying behaviors when they interact with you. It's one of the few games I've played where trees actually fall down when you chop them at the base and you have to pick up the logs. All the best gear and the story is found in the caves below and boy does it get scary as fuck. When I first played it I had to look up video tutorials about finding the shortest route to the items I wanted because I was too terrified to fully explore the cave system. And yes they are more like real caves, not just Skyrim style. You will actually need cave equipment to get through some parts.
