The countries with the most reason to fear the devastation of a nuclear attack are those who don't have nuclear weapons. Nuclear-armed rival superpowers are unlikely to push the national self-destruct button by attacking each other.

If Russia used nuclear weapons against Ukraine, would America really unleash nuclear retaliation -- in consequence of which, as we all know, tens of millions of Americans would inevitably die -- simply for the sake of avenging Ukraine? (Almost) certainly not.

But you have to keep bluffing. The sooner someone realises he can win a war with nukes and very probably get away with it, the sooner he'll try it.

At the Yalta conference, Stalin persuaded the western democracies to give a rubber stamp of approval to a process that was already under way by the end of the war in Soviet-occupied Europe -- the forcible expulsion of of ethnic German minorities from Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Yugoslavia (which cost around 1.2 million Germans their lives) -- but I doubt he'd have wanted to almost completely empty the east German occupation zone and replace its population with a few million Jews. (And that's assuming that millions of Jews would choose to migrate to a Soviet puppet state.)

The population of the Allied occupation zones in western Germany was roughly 50 million people after the end of the war. You forcibly displace 50 million people (never mind the physical impossibility of cramming them into an area 141 square miles in size), and you are creating a decades-long nightmare with consequences that would make the Israel-Palestine conflict look like a storm in a teacup.

I doubt that would have ever been made as a serious offer, because after WWII Uncle Sam was extremely reluctant to admit Jewish refugees from Europe.

Lobby groups in the States thundered about Britains humanitarian duty to open the floodgates of Palestine to Jewish refugees and castigated Arab intransigence. Yet when it came to the prospect of substantial numbers of refugees coming to Americas own shores, her lawmakers were careful to make sure Liberty held up a JEWS NOT WANTED (much) sign.

I can't see anyone in power actually having the necessary vision to gamble on investing a colossal amount of resources in a project that won't win them political rewards in their own lifetime. Their horizons are limited to four or five years from now.

And if people aren't prepared to make minor adjustments to their own lifestyle to try to help slow down climate change even though we're starting to feel its effects, don't expect them to give a thumbs up to their tax dollars being spent on some distant goal that won't directly benefit their own lives or their lives of their children.

He is outright saying that if a child of any age has some understanding of what sex involves, and is willing, then there is nothing morally wrong with having sex with them.

The moral of the story apparently being that if a man wants to have sex with his preteen daughter, he should at least give her a rough description of what he's going to do to her and reassure her that: "daddies and daughters do this all the time, it's perfectly natural. If you really loved your daddy you'd do it with me, so what do you say?". Then this professor will give it a wink and a thumbs up because there's nothing morally wrong with exploiting a child by manipulating her into agreeing to sex.
