Anyway I gave up on Doom Eternal and started playing Grandia on Ps1. Fuckin love Ps1 JRPGs. The battle and progression systems in this one are so dope

Day 1

Aight i just watched the baratie episodes and those were pretty damn good

Everything felt kinda awkward until now. These last two episodes were snappy and flowed nicely. They really nailed Sanji and his backstory

I feel like FF5 and X-2 were the most challenging. Random mobs would just beat the shit out of me sometimes. Bosses come out of nowhere and instantly wipe me.

Funny enough I also feel like those two have the best combat in the series

I for one stand by dragon age 2. Games got a lot of problems, but the plot, characters, and player choices were solid. Overall not a great game, but decent enough

Amazon is no longer reliable for day 1 shipping imo

If its something you gotta have day 1, best buy or gamestop. Dont pre order lol

Actually Aerith was pretty good, but even shes bogged down by the multiverse nonsense. Does she have her memories from the old games, does she already know who cloud is, does she know shes gonna die? The story is ruined by having all this crap running through the players mind

Was Sephiroth like Batman, Nightcrawler, or an illusion? I legit couldnt tell what scenes he was actually in

And was barret always a fanatical preacher? I know he was extreme about environmentalism, but him reciting his own weird scripture principles was just weird. And did he even go crazy and shoot the rubble like in the original? I know wedge and biggs didnt die, so i dunno

Also everything dunkey doesn't like is because it's a jrpg. The original had most all of it. He's right about the robot arm section tho. 7R had 1 too many of those time wasters.

idk, i really love jrpgs, but its like dunkey said - the writing/dialogue in ff7r was so flat and uninteresting. Just about everything in that game felt so weightless and lacked urgency, especially considering how good the writing has been in other games in recent years. Something like disco elysium, or honestly even ff16 puts the animeisms of ff7r to shame

And writing and characters were never super deep in old skool jrpgs - but they didnt have to be. Less can be more. Its like Other M adding characterization to Samus. Somehow she just felt significantly worse

thats how all these ff7 spinoffs feel to me. Shallow and without purpose. I felt like this back when advent children came out, and i still feel like it today

i think about this sometimes actually. we understand so much more about autism nowadays. But we were all teenage jerks on the internet back then. We didnt know the first thing about autism. Its kinda sad when you think about it. Hopefully gen z and future generations get it figured out

You're exactly right. It has so many systems that it actually becomes restrictive, you pretty much have to play the way they want you to or else you will run out of ammo

Im glad its not just me. Idk if im up to playing through this entire game is it worth the ride? The level design and music are both really good, even if the platforming is kinda annoying

Not yet but I will eventually. You might not recognize the TurboDuo and the Twin Famicom. Theyre the best way to play japanese PC-Engine+CD/american Turbo CD games, and famicom/disk system games respectively

Man is it just me, or does Doom Eternal seem over designed? Theres so much micromanagement for a game thats supposed to be a run n gun. Punching for health, chainsaw for ammo, flamethrower for armor is bad enough, but the weak spot system is the worst offender.

I dont remember doom 2016 being this tedious. I just remember organically running all over the place, switching guns, and plowing through everything on pure adrenaline. Now in doom eternal im just stressed out

I tried to play it again, and I thought I was doing pretty good. Got the sword and fought a zombie. Felt pretty confident.

Then I walked down the hall, and the floor collapsed and I died instantly. Welp.

I didn't play this back in it's day, but I did grow up with the original Resident Evil, so I get how scary stuff like this was back then. I was seven years old when I played RE1, and I remember one time I got so scared I shut the Ps1 one off, and ran and hid under the bed. Been a survival horror fan for life ever since.

Nowadays, RE1 looks hilariously dated, but I'm grateful I was there to experience the magic of those old survivor horror games. I didn't play Alone in the Dark till wayyyy later, but apparently it was pretty revolutionary for the time (it definitely inspired RE):

^ I just love this, and I also think it's funny because this game's monsters are so cheesy looking by today's standards. The bouncy cartoon wolf is my favorite. I'm also terrible at this game. It's so funny they don't even give you a chance to figure out the controls, because you only have 10 seconds before the wolf jumps through the window and clusterfucks you. As soon as I start the game I'm like OH GOD GOTTA GRAB THE LAMP, GOTTA GRAB THE RIFLE, OH GOD THE CHAIR SLIDES AROUND AND NOW IM STUCK, AND OF COURSE THE RIFLE DOESNT HAVE AMMO, AND NOW IM DEAD

I can't really rate this game because I haven't gotten through enough of it, but I respect it for what was at the time. Maybe I'll try my hand at a serious playthrough for this topic eventually if anyone's interested

Every console is plugged in and ready to go. All the really old skool ones are hooked up to a sony trinitron crt television - formatted and scanlined to perfection. I also had an HDTV down here, but it died, and i haven't gotten a new one yet, so certain ones like 360 and ps3 aren't hooked up right now

Ps5, Switch, Ps4, XSX, and XB1 are all upstairs. My wife's playing Baldur's Gate 3 and has been hogging the living room TV, so I've been going back to old stuff.

I have around 1,700 physical games, and I still haven't played like 150 of them. It's crazy, I know, but hopefully this topic motivates me to get around to trying them. I might post that full list at some point.

I don't really like the idea of a "backlog" - I don't care to beat every single one of these games (don't think I'd have enough time in my life anyway), but I do fully intend to give every single one a chance, maybe play for like an hour or two and see if it's something I want to actually beat someday.

Right now I'm currently playing Baldur's Gate 3 whenever I can get the Ps5 to myself, and I also finally got around to Doom Eternal. I thought Doom 2016 was so mother fucking badass, and this seems like everything I loved about the first one + more

Also, post a game and I'll write about it and rank it!

Shows fine. Im having fun with it. The dialogue delivery is a little awkward. The tone it needs to hit is such a fine balancing act, and its struggling a bit. Also my wife is really into cosplay, and she says the makeup, wigs, and costumes look cheap as shit on everyone except the straw hats.

Action choreography has been really solid tho

I don't think we need to throw a bone to indie games. I think Hades was goty 2020, and Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium dominated 2019 (with the exception of Sekiro.) Indie games are more than capable of earning that shit.

I also find it funny the Starfield devs are probably seeing all the attention BG3 is getting, and they're just sitting there like "fuck"
