the gap is a half percent, not a whole percent. has been for years. when I refi'd in 2013, I got [email protected]%; [email protected]% was available but the difference in interest was trivial and my home is worth a ton.

Yea, my current house ("starter home"), I got 2.25% at 30 years back in 2014.

the difference in interest rate is tiny

if you're not already maxing your roth 401k you absolutely should not be paying down low interest debt faster

15 years @ low 3's vs 30 @ low 4's is a full point difference and depending on the purchase price of a home can be immensely different.

TC if you do 30 years, pay bi-weekly. Or try to make a full extra payment a year.

If you do that over the 30 years you'll knock off about 5-6 years off that mortgage.

We will definitely consider that, since this second house is most likely our final house.

My parents also think 30 years is better, because then we have a choice about payment (e.g. Pay more if you can afford it).

We're looking to buy our second home (selling our first home), and can't decide on a 15 or 30 year mortgage...

While 15 year mortgage sounds better on first glance, I argued that we can, instead, put the money difference between the 15 and 30 year mortgage payments into our Roth 401k and we'll make more money doing that.

But then my wife argued that we can, instead, put the entire 15 year mortgage payments into our Roth 401k after we pay the house off in 15 years, and the quality of life won't change (because we're "used to" paying the bill).

So...... What does CE think?

I feel like Home Depot caters to more a DIY/professionals, and Lowe's caters to more of a amateur/non-handymen clientele. This is strictly based on how the stores look and their coloring schemes, from the dozens of different HDs and Lowe's I went into.

As far as products, I feel like HD has more products. I was able to find nonstandard bolts at HD vs at Lowe's.

Well your lamp says it can only accept a standard bulb or CFL bulb, and you bought an LED bulb.

Troubleshooting tips, in any order:
*Try another bulb; see if it works.
*Try the LED bulb in a different lamp/socket.
*UNPLUG THE LAMP, then look in its socket. Check if the hot contact is bent correctly, and if not, just bend it towards you more so it can contact the bulb better.
*Try a different power socket, and a combination of both above.

Couple weeks ago, while watching The Last Jedi, a kid (probably under the age of 8) was sitting next to me and he was texting. After a couple times, I asked him to stop, he apologized, and put it away, never to bring it back out until the movie ended.

I recall several months ago, while watching Kingsman 2, an old lady sitting next to me started texting away. Hers was so much more annoying, because the brightness was on full, and the text was huge. I asked her to stop, to which she glared at me, and just turned the phone away from me, not stopping.

Of course they do, but it is generally aligned with the university. And any university worth its salt will vet their professor to not have extremist teachings. This is opposed to the internet, where you can find all sorts of extremism, and nothing is vetted.

The internet is a good tool to go find subsequent knowledge to augment your tuition, but it will not replace it in whole.

I disagree. Internet amplifies a certain ideology. So if you're learning the "wrong" thing, you may convince yourself that that is the "correct" thing. In addition, for technical aspects, you cannot ask questions (e.g. if a calculation you are performing is correct or not), or you rely on non-professionals to answer your questions, which may be a shot in the dark. Furthermore, there's no hands-on things you can do with "just the internet".

The hell is credit card churning

Open a credit card with good sign-up bonus, utilize the bonus, then toss the card or close the account. Rinse and repeat with other cards, and after a certain time, do it again with the same cards.

Example:
Chase AARP card right now gives you $200 back after $500 spent. Do that, then close the card. After 2 years, you're eligible for another sign up bonus with that specific card.

I'm a semi-credit-card-churner, and I applied for a Barclay's card. They denied me, and I was shocked. Of the 30+ credit cards I have, I was never denied. I called them and asked why. They said I have too much credit, and too little balance on them. I asked why is that a bad thing, and they explained that the system believed that I would just use the card for the bonuses, and not use it as a everyday card, hence the denial.

I asked them to reconsider (because at this point, my credit got hit already), and they asked me for some more details on my finance, then approved me for a $16k line of credit.

.........these banks are catching on to us, credit-card-churners. I might have to start closing some of these dead accounts.

the reason is an investment itself: time. if you lose your job, you don't want to be in a position where you have to consider a lower-paying job to ensure other assets won't need to be tampered with to make ends meet

That is true. The rule of thumb is expect a month of job searching for every $10k you want.

Speaking of tampering with investments to make ends meet, this is where Roth IRAs shine: you can pull out the money you put into it without any penalties.

*Modern day CPUs started using statistics to run commands in parallel. If you give it a command, CPUs will now guess what your next command will be, and starts to calculate it.
*This thing that the CPU guessed that will be your next move is stored in an unprotected place.
*Malware can access this unprotected place and take all this data.

After you paid off all your bills, you got some money left?

Well here's what you do with it, in order of importance:
1.1) Liquidity- Keep a thousand or two in your checking account, and move the rest into your savings account. You want your total checking and savings account to grow until you feel comfortable (e.g. have 3x monthly bills; 6x monthly bills; 1x monthly bills... whatever you feel safe at).

1.2) Really High Interest Loans- While you start saving, consider starting to pay more than the minimum payments for any debt you have that are greater than 10% APR. Finish paying off these debt before moving on to step #2.

2) Employer-Assisted- Max out any employer-assisted investment accounts. For example, if your employer matches 4% contribution into your Roth/Traditional 401k, contribute 4%. Be sure to use these funds to actually invest in something, and not just keep it as cash.

3) High Interest Loans- Pay down the principle of any debt you have that are greater than 6% APR.

4) IRA- Deposit up-to $5,500 (per year, cycling from April 15th) into a Roth/Traditional IRA. Just like your 401k, be sure to actually invest this. Some low-fee roboadvisors to help you get started: Betterment, Wealthfront, Schwab IP.

5) Contribute More into HSA- Your HSA can be a tax-advantaged investment account! Contribute as much as you can afford in here, and convert your HSA funds into mutual funds. Contact your HSA administrator for more details.

6) Other Investments- Increase your contributions into your 401k, or open up a traditional investment account and start investing into it. Some low-fee brokers to help you get started in "easy" stock investing: Robinhood, Acorns, Schwab ETF, E-Trade ETF.

7.1) Low/Medium Interest Loans- Pay down the principle of any debt you have that are under 6%.

7.2) High Risk Ventures- Have fun and use your excess money in high risk ventures.
