I was probably attacking too close to the base. It was harder to hit further out, not to mention that its tail whip attack was the only threatening thing it could do, so I wanted to stay away from there whenever possible.

Hot tip since you've already missed some opportunities - You can cut off the tails of certain enemies (like gaping dragon, gargoyles) and get unique weapons.
I knew about the gargoyle one and got it, but I'm not sure how I missed Gaping Dragon's. I was attacking its tail a lot early on, but eventually I switched to its legs when it seemed like nothing was going to happen.

Will keep in mind for future bosses though.

Killed the Gaping Dragon. It looked super intimidating and had a ton of HP but I got it first try by just staying near its legs and chipping away at it. It really needed like... a flying slam attack or something, because its constant flying retreats were just free Estus Flask time.

Got through Lower Undead Burg and killed the Capra Demon.

...Definitely wasn't because of masterful play, though! It felt like I just traded blow after blow with him and he fell down first.

I think I have at least three options of where to go from here. Not sure how far I can get in them, but I've at least seen the entrances to Valley of Drakes (via Darkroot Basin), Catacombs (via Firelink Shrine), and now the Depths via Lower Undead Burg. I want to say there was one more too but I can't recall.

Yeah I don't need tips on everything, but stuff like where to go next when I'm really lost or why I can't get past a certain boss etc is appreciated because otherwise I'll just get annoyed. Also I'm not paying for Switch online right now so there aren't any in-game tips to help.

Poise might actually be more important than your damage resistance. That stat dictates how easy it is for you to get staggered and possibly stunlocked when hit. It's also useful in the sense that you can attack through light damage. I believe that also means when shielding, but I could be wrong; it's been years since I've played.
Oh, that makes sense, it seemed like I could trade hits with the leaf guys more after equipping it.

Killed Moonlight Butterfly. Well, I didn't, I couldn't reach it, but I summoned a witch to do it for me. I've also realized that swords don't actually work that well on everything so now I have a +4 reinforced club to break shit with.

I killed a kinda tough knight and got a Wolf Ring which raises poise, which I still don't fully understand but I know it's good!

I feel so bad about killing these frog slime guys, they're too cute to be enemies.

I wish I knew enemy names for this game lmao

xp, I think I also found the boss in Blackroot Basin you were talking about, but it killed me while I was fighting the crystal guys. Any recommendation on whether I should do church or basin first, or is just nonlinear and doesn't really matter?

Never mind, didn't realize the mage doesn't respawn. Fighting Gargoyles now.

The amount of weight you have equipped effects your movement and dodge animations beyond the obvious overencumberance. There are breakpoints at 25% and 50% IIRC. I tried to stay under 25% personally for the faster movement and fastest dodge but going into the 25-50 range happened from time to time and was fine. But this goes into your playstyle and if you prefer heavier armor/weapons then by all means do it.
I'm just under 50% right now and it's slow but I'm not sure how to get it lower? All I have equipped is the bare essentials. I'm guessing I'll find lighter stuff later.

I saw the blacksmith but forgot where so I haven't actually spoken to him yet. I'll try to go find him now. Luckily Bloodborne prepared me for the idea of upgrading weapons helping more than levels.

I basically agree with all those complaints, but one thing I realized about halfway in is that the controls work a lot better if you stop trying to be precise and just try to blitz through each platforming section instead. This isn't an excuse since, as you said, something like Hollow Knight just plain controls better, but it does make the game more enjoyable.

I've heard nothing but good things about this game, but it's just... bad. The combat, platforming, and controls feel awkward at best, exploration is rewarded with constant instant death traps, and the ending comes out of nowhere and explains nothing. Sorry if I'm trashing anyone's favorite game here, but... yeesh. I should have trusted the impression I got from the demo that I wouldn't like this!

Uh, this game's mediocre. The space combat is pretty fun once you get the hang of it, and the gameplay loop is alright, but it definitely gets repetitive. The Star Fox part was fun, though everyone was just slightly OOC. I actually enjoyed the original characters in a Saturday morning cartoon sort of way, but they interacted disappointingly little.

But the most brutal part was clearly the Djinn Storm. Not only does putting all your Djinn on Standby ruin any Summon plans you might have, it also shreds your stat and class boosts, making you lose HP, PP, and even a lot of your psynergy if you were mixing djinn.
Getting hit by Djinn Storm was literally the first time I realized djinn going from standby to set (or vice versa) affected your stats mid-battle. I was not a very attentive kid.

I think the cheese strategy involved the 2 damage reducing djinn, and alternating them so you could use one each turn while the other recovered. Though one was much, much better than the other so Dullahan could still rip you apart on "off" turns.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)

The first 10 or so hours with this game are magic. Each new tower is a struggle, not just to find but then to climb when you only have one stamina wheel, so it's incredibly satisfying to get to the top of one and unlock the region's map. The game kinda slows down when you go to Gerudo and Eldin, unfortunately. The ending pulls it back though because the plot, while simple, is legitimately compelling (mostly thanks to Zelda being a fantastic character). I was surprised that (ending spoilers, but for something that doesn't happen) Sidon, Riju, Teba, and the goron one didn't end up contributing at all in the actual fight against Ganon. I expected that right up to the end.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (Switch)

I know I'm on the Switch version here, but this really felt like playing a game that's still in beta. Can't imagine what it was like before the v1.03 update. Items fell through the floor, enemies clipped through walls, some enemy models would stretch across the screen or duplicate during their death animations, the script had typos and places where it didn't match the voice acting, and during the fight with Gebel he threw me out of the boss room completely (I could still attack him from behind the door, and when I beat him this way, the game crashed - one of two full-on crashes I lucked into). This isn't even mentioning the more fundamental performance issues because I was expecting and can mostly forgive those.

My biggest takeaway is that I think the game would play, run, and look significantly better if it was fully 2D. But even then, it's just not a very compelling Castlevania game, and has 0 identity of its own. It's fine but I'd rather have been replaying SotN or Hollow Knight or something.
