pre-1913 times, and to a lesser extent (although ironically this is what the public will associate it with, because they weren't alive pre-1913), the 50s-60s, when there was peace

You have a deep misunderstanding of US history.

Resources, and later money

That's an answer only a completely demoralised and cynical materialist would give. Let's not be like that.

It's an answer someone knowledgeable about US history would give.

I have. A nation constitutes of a people of common blood, tongue, culture and history, and their land.

Have you ever actually done a count of how many different nations there SHOULD be?

Based on that criteria the right answer is probably 0.

WTF? You can photograph the graphs with your phone, upload to imgtc, and post them.

I don't own and have immediate access to every single history book I've read. I hope this concept is understandable?

If you show me the relevant pages, I'll look. Until then, it's the author's word against this reviewer's. Certainly not buying a third-wave feminist's book to win imaginary internet points.

What, do you want to buy me a ticket to Bulgaria so I can do your homework for you? You have the internet and presumably a brain, figure it out.

Homeward Bound: American Families in the Cold War Era

*looks at amazon reviews*

The author refers to the Kelly Longitudinal Study. Most of the study participants, men and women rated themselves as happy and gave high ratings to their marriages. But the author insists that the women were unhappy. She obviously has an agenda.

I'd be interested to see the actual study's statistics.

Well you're probably not gonna unless you want to leaf through about 600 boxes of notes in the Harvard archives or some shit. If you're actually interested, I'd recommend borrowing the book and looking at the studies it reprints in its pages first, as those are probably the easier ones to access. If you're not actually interested then go ahead and trust a random amazon reviewer who might not have even read the book and who may or may not have any history/research credentials.

The Kelly Longitudinal Study

Which is hard to actually get a copy of to look at (I've tried!), so I'd recommend Homeward Bound: American Families in the Cold War Era by Elaine Tyler May for a book that draws on the study as its biggest source.

People long after something they can remember (or at least see in old films).

Here's the whole problem: people long after the propaganda version of the 50s, but that propaganda was a response to how bad the 50s actually were. Rock already said some of it, but in addition to the widespread economic anxiety and empty consumerism of the 50s, the average American was also fairly unhappy (yes, even if they were a white man!)

81% of Bulgarians consider our national interests more important than "globalisation." Only 9% sided with "globalisation," with 10% not sure. In the world, the number is lower, at 70%. But the trend is clear. The peoples of the world reject globalism.

Whoa, almost makes it sound like globalization is a dumb bogeyman that no one is actually prioritizing. But if that was true, your whole ideology being centered around fighting it wouldn't make much sense. Weird.

I hardly remember her from FE6 (may have been only in the extra final chapter which I didn't actually get in my playthrough?) but she's cute.

She's in other parts of the game (most notably the early chapter where Hector dies) but yeah the true final chapter is the only time she's really prominent.

Samus > Sheik is one thing, but I thought you were trying to say say ZSS > Sheik and I wasn't sure I was reading this as you intended.

ZSS, yeah. I'd (very marginally) take Samus over Zelda and I expect ZSS to retain more of Samus' strength than Sheik does of Zelda's.

I also had a terrible, terrible bracket in the last contest so take my predictions with a grain of salt!

Is anybody rallying for Zero Suit Samus over Samus? I don't think it'll work as well as our rally, and Sheik is beating ZSS in a match anyway.

I'd absolutely take Samus there without a second thought. <_<

Is anybody rallying for R.O.B.? Id actually welcome that, but let's not act like he'll be strong either.

Didn't originate in a video game, technically.

Edit: I do think Dark Samus is kind of a cool rally choice, but it wouldn't be because of Smash.

Young Link or Toon Link in addition to Link would break the spirit of what we're dealing with here. LoZ has weird continuity with its characters so they may be recognized as separate characters, but the points above remind us how similar they are in Smash and that's before considering how similar they are in LoZ. Wolf Link and Fierce Diety Link are basically power-ups to existing Links in my mind -- nobody wants Fire Mario and Cape Mario.

With recognition that Sheik is a disguise for Zelda in LoZ:OoT, Smash still separates Sheik from Zelda more overall than these Links do from Link.

I agree with all of this. I think the best pro-Sheik line, for me at least, is that plenty of characters get into these contests on Smash and effectively nothing else, so it's not really any worse to try to get Sheik in on her Smash status. They're different characters in a "character select screen" sense rather than a literary sense.

Sheik is more separated from Zelda than any of those Links are to Link.

I mean, aside from the fact that the different Links are actually legit different characters, while Sheik is Zelda in disguise. <_<

Ultimate kinda addresses that though by very clearly picking two different Zeldas to represent Sheik and Zelda.

We're glad you're on-board! I'm about to address "precedent," but I think you're thinking of things like Aeris/Aerith and we have another perspective.

Specifically Tales of Symphonia. Mithos/Yggdrasil. Not to mention Ganon/Ganondorf.

There are others but I haven't played their games so idk how comparable the situations are: Ren/Joker, Naked Snake/Big Boss, etc.

I'm down to try, but Sheik and Zelda are literally the exact same person. The precedent has usually been to combine those nominations. I can see Sheik's noms just getting wrapped into Zelda's total.
