As I mentioned earlier, the hate crime aspect is less relevant to the crime at hand and more relevant to determining how much of a threat they are to society (which should always be the primary consideration in sentencing somebody). Somebody shoots up a church because they were bullied by some of the congregants, they're going to have fewer potential future targets than somebody who shoots up the church because it was full of a certain type of people. The former is emotionally unstable, the latter is genocidal, meaning the latter is more dangerous.

Then you can remove the narrow definition specifying a hate crime and just punish people who act in this kind of way. The issue isn't targeting a protected class, it's the mindset of murdering a collective like it's a single, inhuman entity.

I'd be fine with defining hate crime like that. As you say, it's not an issue of whether or not the target is a protected class (although the concept is usually applied to protect a class that an appreciable number of people want to target), it's a matter of killing on an impersonal basis that implies they have many more potential targets.

But is someone planning a mass murder spree at a black church somehow inherently so much worse than a white person planning a mass murder spree at a white church?

Or could we possibly agree that planning a mass murder spree at a church is pretty f***ed up no matter who is inside?

It could easily be a hate crime either way, though. As mentioned, being racially motivated doesn't require the perpetrator to be a different race from the victims, and there can easily be unifying factors other than race in those scenarios (such as the whole church thing).

ParanoidObsessive posted...
It's not like the people are going to be any less dead if you murdered them for no obvious reason, whereas racism makes them extra dead.

Of course, the distinction becomes pretty moot when talking about actual murder, since premeditated murder carries an automatic life sentence in most cases, with the murderer only getting out earlier than that if there's reason to believe they're no longer a threat. That's not really going to change between regular murder and hate murder. In this case, however, her plan was interrupted, so her genocidal inclinations warrant a longer sentence than more personal motivations would, for the sake of public safety. At least, that would be valid logic if being in prison didn't stand a good chance of radicalizing her further by exposing her to like-minded individuals, but that's another problem.

The communities didn't create and sell the skins. It's the companies that create a visible distinction between players that are playing for free and players that have paid. It's the community that then ends up treating non-paying players differently, but there are absolutely things the developers can do to prevent or encourage that, depending on how much they want to capitalize on that social pressure.

Honestly, insisting on having the full National Dex catchable in every single Pokemon game has been more of a problem than anything else, given how large it's gotten and what that means for balancing and having a competitive metagame (particularly where so many pokemon that are available aren't available without bringing them in from a previous generation). Having "only" 450 or whatever in the game is still more to catch than any game in the first 3 generations had, while being a much more manageable number for balancing purposes and ensuring people can access the competitive metagame without also having to buy the last three games to get older Pokemon that haven't been succeeded by ones that are available in this game. It's just more practical to have a smaller (but still quite large) number to work with.

Sure, it seems like a step backwards because we're so used to the National Dex, but really, the National Dex has been a mistake since its inception. Older Pokemon should only ever have shown up in later games occasionally, as nostalgic cameos. Trying to keep every Pokemon in every game was only ever going to result in impractically large numbers. This change was inevitable.

Basically, don't fly with anything you don't want opened. Any sealed package should be expected to be opened because of the risk that you could be concealing something within it.

Vaulting is absolutely going to affect streaming. At no point will Disney's entire library of content be available on Disney+. They'll be taking stuff down and putting stuff up as they see fit to keep people interested, exactly as they do with their physical movie libraries. The precedent is there for such practices because stuff appears and disappears from Netflix all the time, but that's because Netflix has to buy temporary distribution licenses, not because they're manipulating supply and demand.

Steak and ground beef are two entirely different things.

The cooking problem remains.

If you don't cook something until it's done, you might get sick from it being contaminated. That's not a problem exclusive to beef.

A steak will only have contaminates on the exterior. Ground beef can have the contaminates throughout.

Indeed. Unless you've ground it yourself, you always want to cook ground meat to 165, especially given the potential to have it contaminated with cerebrospinal fluid if the butcher's careless working around the spine (this is why ground beef is one of the biggest concerns during Mad Cow outbreaks). Steaks, on the other hand, are going to be safe inside, so you can have them rarer without as much consequence.

For games with a clear win condition, that's the easiest way to define it, but there's often a lot of room for debate about what it means to beat a game. Most of that debate comes from people feeling that their own goals for what they want to get out of the game are the most important. In the case of Odyssey, I enjoyed hunting for moons and whatnot enough that I didn't really care about when I beat Bowser (although it was great fun) and just kept playing until I'd unlocked everything. Vaccine injuries are indeed a thing. No question. Thats been proven. Its just that the media concentrates more on the horrors of not getting vaccinated.

It's nothing to do with the media. That's empirical reality: both the likelihood and the magnitude of the risks associated with not vaccinating are significantly greater than the risks of vaccine injuries. If anything, the media actually concentrates more on vaccine injuries because you still get enough people dying of preventable diseases (mostly influenza) that such stories aren't as newsworthy as a significant adverse vaccine reaction.

HornedLion posted...
I dont even know where you got this from.

It's pretty typical. Traumatic event happens, people look for a reason why, and they latch on to the first correlation they spot, regardless of how much basis exists for inferring a causal relationship. People like explanations when things go wrong in their lives, and tend to stop thinking about those explanations as soon as they feel adequately comforted by them.

HornedLion posted...
The consensus amongst those Ive talked to about vaccine injuries is not that they shouldnt be taken. Its that theyre being administered at an age when the risk for vaccine injuries are at its highest.

And do they have any actual studies to support that? There are ample instances of vaccines being delayed, after all, such that you could easily compare the incidence of vaccine injuries (actual or suspected) between the standard vaccine schedule and a delayed one. That's not even a case where you can cite big pharma interference, because the same number of vaccines would be sold regardless of whether or not the schedule is delayed. So what's their evidence?

Right or wrong, even the most moronic of individuals have the right to believe in what they want to.

For all we know, they could be right. The straight thinkers shooting down ideas that vaccinations could be harmful because of their scientific knowledge of what goes into them and the things they can and cannot do, and the anti-vax ranters trying to undermine scientific fact, only making fools of themselves...

and then a study comes out 15 years later showing that vaccines do cause developmental issues, not because of anything in the vaccines, but simply because of how they're administered. The simple act of getting a shot, to a very young child, their terror, and their parents pushing this on them rather than protecting them from it, ends up a series of traumatic experiences that results in developmental disabilities.

Wouldn't that be something?

I mean, the basic concept of a link between vaccines and developmental disabilities has already been shot down by everyone looking for a connection between vaccines and autism. The potential source of that link doesn't matter; the fact of the matter is that the link isn't there.

Conceptually, it's not unreasonable. You end up with a result that's not necessarily everyone's first choice, but is at least most people's second or third choice, which aligns well with the fundamental idea of democracy (that is, a government that reflects what the majority wants). It runs into problems, though, when you have relatively few choices (I think we've got a grand total of 7 now if we count the bloc and the communist party), especially when 2-3 of those choices are consistently expected to be at least second-favourite for most people. It's better with larger ballots and more evenly-matched candidates.

That's also a pretty myopic viewpoint. Both conservatives and progressives are frequently guilty of ignoring inconvenient facts and ultimately both groups have what they believe are beneficial reasons for either changing things or leaving them as they are and to pretend otherwise is kind of embarrassingly disingenuous.

Indeed. Progressives are just as guilty of saying "change is always good" as conservatives are of saying "change is always bad." In order to be effective, a government needs a blend of viewpoints, both to push conservatives out of their comfort zone to make changes for the better and to rein in progressives that haven't realized they're suggesting a change for the worse.

Unfortunately, the American approach to "a blend of viewpoints" seems to be one half of the room believing anyone that isn't a straight white man doesn't deserve rights, while the other half of the room wants it to be illegal to make a profit. That doesn't work so well. You need everyone to have relatively moderate viewpoints for anything to work.

I tried flying from Glasgow to Dublin with Ryanair a few years ago on a family vacation. Mysteriously, our luggage had collectively gained 40-odd kilograms since we left home, which meant they were going to be charging us some 600 in extra luggage fees (and presumably the same amount on the return flight). The clerk that was checking us in (who apparently gets a bonus based on the amount of extra luggage fees she charges, which is insanely sketchy) was pretty upset when we were like "lolno" and skipped the flight. The tickets were only 5 each (plus 30 for an extra bag that apparently didn't give us any more allowed weight, just let us split the weight of one of those bags into two bags), so we didn't lose too much there. The logistics and extra hotel rooms needed to change the next leg of the trip around that ended up costing a sizable chunk, but if we were going to have to pay that much either way, I'm glad the money didn't go to those scumbags.
