Maybe certain countries have higher populations because other countries decided to help them increase fertility by providing aid without said countries learning proper social responsibility first? Explosive population growth in developing countries is usually a consequence of the fact that it takes time for cultures to catch up to the fact that their infant mortality rate has gone down. When infant mortality rates are high, you need to keep pumping out kids to have any chance of having a couple reach adulthood. When infant mortality rates go down, you get a period of explosive growth because people keep having the same number of kids, but those kids actually survive. That growth naturally slows down within a generation or two. Sure, it'd be nice if birth rates could reduce at the same time as infant mortality rates, for more controlled population growth, but that's just not a realistic expectation. Somebody who watched 8 of their 10 siblings die before puberty (and similar rates among all their friends and extended family) isn't going to immediately be okay with only having 2-3 kids just because some doctor says those kids probably won't die. You need a couple generations of people experiencing those lower mortality rates for themselves. |

_AdjI_ 10/09/19 9:59:34 AM #25 | aDirtyShisno posted... Sexual orientation however is constantly changing. Today you feel like dating women but in 5 years you decide you want to date men, then years later you date both, and so on, and so on... Making it illegal to discriminate based upon your preferences opens up a can of worms when your preferences are something untoward, such as animals, objects, or children. It's not really setting a slippery slope of legal precedent to say "gay sex is okay because it's between consenting adults." Animals and children are not consenting adults, so they're not fair game, and in fact are illegal to have sex with (in which case, you're not discriminating based on their sexual preference, but on their criminal record). Objects? It's weird, but it's not hurting anybody, so there's no reason to discriminate on that basis (unless they start ****ing random objects at work, which is unsanitary and an unauthorized use of work time and therefore a justifiable reason to fire them). |

It's just easier to see the bigger picture (literally, I suppose) with visual art. |
Topic | Fornite gets sued for being more addictive than Cocaine... |
_AdjI_ 10/09/19 9:48:01 AM #8 | DPsx7 posted... I can't see anything addicting about it. Random loot is inherently addicting, regardless of what game it's in. The chance of finding an upgrade or some other cool new thing is a great way to keep people rolling the dice. The battle royale model means you're finding upgrades literally every game (since you start with nothing; the same applies to Rogueli(t/k)es), and Fortnite tacks on random cosmetic loot as well for another layer of random reward. Toss in that matches are relatively short and easy to start, meaning you don't have to put any effort into getting another chance to roll those dice, and you've got a thoroughly addicting gameplay loop. That you don't personally find it addicting doesn't mean it doesn't have addictive mechanics. |

I was a big fan of WWHD for the way it addressed some of the original's more crippling flaws and turned it into an amazing game, despite not changing all that much content. They will eventually reach a point where the vast majority of users won't need any more power than they can provide, though, so that will become a non-issue. However, people will always have preferences for input systems and screen sizes that will mean desktops and laptops will continue to have a market (or at least docking stations that allow a phone to be used as the computing device for a laptop- or desktop-sized workstation, which will likely be more expensive than just buying a suitable laptop or desktop). |

Heart disease kills 610,000 Americans every year, orders of magnitude greater than the number killed by home invaders (I'm seeing 100 in one spot, but I'm having trouble pinning down exact numbers in a quick search), yet none of these people who allegedly care so much about personal safety are doing anything to address that vastly greater risk. |

In practice, one shop of a given type opening in an area frequently prevents other, similar shops from opening in the area due to the fact that there simply isn't enough of a market to support more than one, particularly if we're talking about a small town (as we have been). Therefore, by operating in a manner that excludes a group, that group is likely to be deprived of the ability to get the service without traveling. Kyuubi4269 posted... While I don't care for this to be suddenly flipped on, let's imagine it did. A provision could easily be made that previous customers can continue to use services available to them but no new customers could. That would mean that nobody who already put down roots would be effected, but anybody who moves in to rural hickland should be wary of potential restrictions and act accordingly. If they cannot use a service then it's on them to ensure their move would allow them to live how they want to. While that's a particularly absurd hypothetical, blaming those moving in is only reasonable if it's well-advertised that they won't be able to shop there. Otherwise, you've just got a bunch of assholes making people's lives worse for (presumably) no reason, which is exactly what I just said not to do. |
Topic | all games should have an easy mode |
_AdjI_ 09/15/19 11:16:17 PM #43 | Some games really don't lend themselves to having their difficulty adjusted without changing a lot, but if it's reasonably simple to put one in (i.e. tweak a few damage/hp values, adjust some spawns, remove some of the more challenging attack patterns...), there's really no reason not to have an easier mode. If the mere existence of an easy mode detracts from your ability to enjoy a game that's challenging on harder modes, you really need to get over yourself. More people enjoying a game that you like is not a bad thing. Yellow posted... Different difficulty modes are probably one of the easiest things to throw in as an afterthought. It's why it's in almost every single game, it doesn't take any development time. That's the lazy way out, and it's often not that enjoyable. Take it to extremes, and you get either rocket tag or bullet sponges (or enemies being bullet sponges that play rocket tag with you), which just gets tedious instead of actually harder. Proper difficulty should make it harder to avoid making errors, not just punish those errors more. |

If you start placing 100% of the responsibility on the bank for covering losses on this scale, that's going to result in the bank finding whatever lower-level employee was most directly responsible for the error and taking the loss out of their pay. Given that this is likely to be 2-3 years' worth of pay, that means banks won't be able to find anyone to work those positions because of the risks involved and/or will have to dramatically increase their wages to compensate, neither of which are particularly conducive to the bank being able to function. These mistakes shouldn't happen, no, but they do, and the safeguards in place to mitigate their impact include the legal protocols for finding money like this. The only reason there's any problem at all here is because the couple decided to say "I guess this is our money now they can't catch us," instead of contacting the bank to figure out what happened.
