It's showing the reality, harsh as it was, of America at that time. Mark Twain was one of, if not the, most liberal celebrities of his time and incredibly progressive in race rights/issues. Treating the black character anything but that way would have been a lie and disservice to what slaves, pre-and-post Civil War, went through. That's kind of the point. The n-word isn't there as something funny. It's not a joke. It's a fact of life. The response should be disgust. Not because Twain wrote it in there. One group grew up with the internet and cell phones and shit, the other ones only had those things enter their lives in their high school years. That's about as big a cultural divide past Boomers vs WW2 generation that exists in people alive today. There will always be differences in the extremes of each generation. But those of us born in the mid-80's still have more in common with those born in the early 90's than we do with Gen-X. We had pre-internet in childhood and internet (shitty as it was) in middle school/high school.
