Ford had already served in Europe during World War 2 and it obviously had a profound effect on him. He was getting frustrated during the shoot and called Wayne out for not being a true hero and serving in the war, instead only portraying heroes on film. He eventually had to apologize to Wayne because he hurt his feelings. But there are definite periods were particular eras were much better than others. I put that more on the writers' room than anything though. I mean when it was Phil Hartman, Bob Odenkirk, Conan, Greg Daniels, Franken, Brown, Jack Handey, etc, etc... doing the writing? It was way more hit than miss with all of that talent. And then of course when Tina Fey was writing things 15 years later. I certainly don't agree with it being trash like others say. It's no where near as bad as the mid-90s garbage (save for the greatest Weekend Update host ever). It's just more tepid I guess?
