I definitely agree, and depending on the specifics, it definitely can be an important impairment.

I've never once thought "I'm sure glad you misled me about that before"; it's always more like "now you tell me, no wonder that never made sense". it's a lazy way to teach and condescending to students.

I don't think burning something or not is about skill exactly, it's more absent-mindedness or not paying attention. to really burn something you have to forget about it. as a child or teen, that was definitely a common occurrence, but as a supposedly responsible adult I make sure not to do stupid things like that.

and then, depending on how extreme or not "burning" is, some examples that may or may not count could include:
- singeing microwave popcorn? I did that once a few years ago.

- overcooking fried eggs? if you cook the eggs before the hashbrowns, the eggs get cold since it takes so much longer to cook hashbrowns. if you cook the hashbrowns first, the frying pan is too hot for the eggs. but I wouldn't really call that "burnt", they're just a bit rough on the outside

- overcooking chicken? trying to get the exact right cooking time and temperature on my oven, I did get it a bit dry the first time, but only slightly.

- I tried putting olive oil on chicken while it baked once, that was a bad idea, made a lot of smoke. not exactly "burning" though, the chicken was fine.

- sometimes when you make those pasta meal things, if they have milk in it, they can literally go from not boiling to boiling over in like 2 seconds. that sort of does burn when it goes under the burner and makes a mess. haven't done that in a long time though.

doesn't necessarily require logging into another account, as long as the current user only has read access (and some other user has write access). configuring it is as easy as visiting the security tab on the properties window.

(there is a registry setting available to enable opening windows explorer windows as administrator that makes it a lot easier to do this, though I seem to have lost the ability after upgrading to windows 10. not sure if it's still available or not.)

(it also helps if the current user is not an admin, and you have a separate admin login that you know the password to. most people don't run their computers this way, but they should.)

depending what you're trying to do, maybe just setting the read-only flag on the shortcut files could be sufficient too.

More want something simple for others using the system (mostly nephews needing after school entertainment until their mum finishes work) where they aren't going to accidentally rename stuff, delete stuff, move stuff, etc. The folder with all the shortcuts will be able to remain safe while they can access the games through some simple client.
steam has family view, where you can select certain games that are the only ones available when you lock it into family view, requiring a PIN to unlock it. you can also create shortcuts to other non-steam/non-game programs in steam. (though not 100% sure custom programs would work with family view.)

you could also just restrict access to that shortcut folder so that only your user can modify the files. not always easy to do that kind of thing unless you have windows professional though, but I think home versions might be a little better these days. you can also change the settings on the window to hide the sidebars and have larger icons.

yeah fists do (from wiki) 40-55 which doesn't exactly fit. it's approximately (1-8)*2 + 38. (note that the calculation is slightly different than 2d8, which implies two dice rolls. really it's 1d8 * base damage. one dice roll, multiplied by base.)

I can't remember if it applies to the player's weapons, but it's more complex than that

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq3x1Jy8pYM

yeah ok, it's 1-8 * base damage, just like above. what you're thinking of I think is that a lot of attacks (bullets) have 3 base damage, so do 1-8 * 3 damage, or 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, or 24 damage. but that's just weapons with 3 base damage.

that means that for example the sapphire wand, with 2 base damage, is doing 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, or 16 damage, randomly. (I guess; still don't remember ettins taking that many hits. I need to try playing again.).

yeah the numbers I was using don't really add up (even though those are the numbers I was editing in some config file). the wand's base damage number was 2, which was only reducible to 1. but an ettin having 175hp doesn't take 175 hits. so something else magnifies it afterwards. (might have been specific to the doomsday engine too.)

(actually, I forgot doom has random damage. looking it up "1" point of damage means 1-8 damage, depending how it rolls. so frost shards by default do "1" damage per shard, which is 1-8 damage per shard. sapphire wand does "2" damage, so 2-16 per shot. (though that still seems off since would mean an ettin would take like 15-20 hits? I don't remember them taking that many hits.))

for the cleric mace, it's probably the worst weapon by far, but the thing to remember (IIRC) is that it does attack fast. so it has almost passable dps if you get used to the way it attacks and focus on getting repeated hits. (it's still terrible though.)

I should have noticed that. I guess it depends if you're using i for something, but yeah, i will count from 1 to something, not 0 to something - 1.

this kind of performance optimization is usually completely unnecessary, unless you very specifically have to make this one loop as fast as possible. modern computers are already unfathomably fast, so micro-optimizations are a waste of time. instead, you write your program cleanly, and then if it's slow somewhere, profile it and optimize the part that's actually slow.

basically (if you hook it up the same way to count). it's do...while that's a bit different since it will always execute the body once.

readability is more important than typing slightly less. a rule of thumb is to never use ++, especially combining it with evaluation.

for (int x = 0; x < length; x += 1) {
}

one exception I allow myself is when you have a list of array accesses that all reference sequentially.

var x = -1;
Object.Property = values[++x];
Object.AnotherProperty = values[++x];
// etc...

it's less error prone not to actually type sequential integers. can also use a closure:

var x = -1;
Something next() => values[++x];

Object.Property = next();
Object.AnotherProperty = next();

(there's also a reason why I use ++x instead of x++ but can't remember.)

Yellow posted...
Doing it this way basically removes an opcode from every loop, right?
I don't think so, how could it? what opcode would be removed?

always going to be something like:

mov ax, 0
loop: cmp ax, length
jl done
<body>
inc ax
jmp loop
done:

might be able to eliminate a jump moving things around but I think that's the order things occur with a for loop.

yes, the hammer does great damage. the point of the wand being OPd though is that it can take out pretty much any enemy from any distance with little to no effort, for free. other weapons definitely win in terms of DPS, but for the wand being your base weapon, it's way too powerful. (it's not really that it devastates; it's slow and steady reliable damage from any distance, trivializing a lot of situations.)

All the weapons have advantages at different parts of the game... the Wizard's wand may be great in the beginning, but the Warrior's upgrades are better, whereas the Cleric doesn't shine until assembling Wraithverge or whatever
not sure what you mean. the vanilla wand by itself is basically better than all of the fighter's weapons. (I guess you could say that the wand annihilates anything at long-range, wheras the fighter annihilates anything at close-range.)

the cleric's serpent staff is insanely good, doing very high ranged damage for low mana, and having a vampiric (healing) close-range attack.

I might as well list the changes I make to the game:

Enemies:
  • Ettins: made more deadly but easier to kill (IMO this is the game's biggest flaw; Ettins are so numerous but not dangerous and just time-consuming to kill. they should be slightly dangerous but easy to kill. whoever designed their stats made it so that they wait over a third of a second from the start of their attack before doing any damage *and* also gave them an overly-sized radius so that they start their attack standing super far away from you, so if you move even slightly away in that third of a second, they miss. meanwhile they have 175hp.)
  • Chaos Serpents: more HP (and I give the brown ones a bit more than the green)
  • Dark Bishop: buffed in every way (faster, faster attacks, no stagger, more HP, more damage, more death splash)
  • Centaurs: reduce blue bolt damage slightly
Weapons:
  • Wand (mage): half damage (and even then still kind of OPd)
  • Frost Shards (mage): double damage (could be a little more, but I think it has to be an integer, and the change is from 1 per projectile to 2. 3 per projectile is too much.)
  • Serpent Staff (cleric): reduce damage to 3 per shot instead of 5 (same melee damage)
  • Axe and Hammer (fighter): each cost 1 more mana per attack (otherwise you almost never run out of mana as fighter, even when using both of these constantly. I don't think I ever tried this change though.)
(these aren't necessarily perfect changes and could still probably use some tweaking. been a while since I played through the game like this.)

(oh and I never use the 4th weapons, but they could all definitely benefit from changes too).

and I don't mean it like the cynical "don't you know politics is rigged" kind of thing. I mean this particular situation is specifically designed to work this way. and everyone knows it works that way. and everyone knew it would end up this way.

the only thing to complain about would be the impeachment process itself or something.
