A surprisingly good batch of songs. I never really remember detention center music, but everything here was fairly enjoyable. These song names are pretty funny, too. Elegy of the Surveillance Cameras? Really?

1 sounds way worse than what I remember. It must be that soundchip. 4 is surprisingly catchy, but I think it doesn't fit the detention center at all.

Yeah, it's a little disappointing, but at least it helps with porting. Top screen = Junpei, bottom screen = Akane and final sudoku puzzle is the main reason why DS feels like the best version.

I do really like the VLR voice acting. Maybe I just had low expectations, but each voice actor really nails their part.

There's a really long interview with the developer of 999 that goes over all of the spoilers. I'd link it but it's best to read through that (and VLR's interview) after you finish the whole series, just to avoid spoiling further down the road. Most of it is basically clarifying things about the ending and making some things clearer.

This is probably Larry's best appearance outside of AA1 and 3-5, but that's still pretty high...! I do actually like his series-wide arc that art seems to be his calling, though.

I generally agree with the rest, but I'd put Sebastian and Keyes higher. He's an entertaining character and his E2-5 portrayal is pretty great all around.

I always liked Elbird. I thought he's pretty much ideal of a witness as you can get. Plays a reasonable part in the murder, suspicious enough to not be ruled out as the actual culprit, entertaining animations.

the assassin standoff unfortunately is by far my least favorite part about the ending to this case. so bad.

Basically all of this. Dogen is fine in theory, but in practice, I didnt like him at all. The weird plot armor surrounding the assassins was not that weird in 2-4, but it really stands out in AAI2.

I love Keyes, but I guess I just tend to like troll/clown villains in general. The entire games plot about fatherhood and the rippling effects are really pronounced through Keyes and Marsh.

The actual murder itself is pretty entertaining. I totally agree with you that the standing Huang in the shadows is totally an ass-pull with the fuller context of the murder.

Character themes are going to be interesting. Maybe we should split it by case again, otherwise it might get overwhelming. It would also deter from having a spoilerific culprit theme day.

I guess the other character theme polls would be detective, assistant, and lawyer (maybe split by Defense and Prosecutor)?

I like E2-5 a ton, but I think I generally like grand conspiracy ideas and I really like how AAI2 handles that. I also feel the mastermind part of the plot was handled really well and SS-5 is a really strong background case for reasons Seabass mentioned.

Im impressed by how consistently good this batch is. Middle may have higher highs, but every song here is good.

I think I had 2 over 1 last time we did this. 2 is good but its so narrow in scope. 1 is so applicable. I think its telling that so many of the core themes follow 1s sound, but I think 1s skill in making simple and catchy melodies works in its favor here.

4 would be the best if there were more to it. It has a really nice and catchy beat. Its just way too short.

Really solid batch all around. Top 3 are all really good. I kinda feel like 3 is the perfect mix of inquisitive, intensifying, and catchy. But I just love 2 way too much, even if it feels more like a character theme than an investigative theme.

5 Middle is oof. Whats happening there? I think I dont like DDs OST as much as I thought. Maybe the court music is where DD will excel.

Definitely a weak crew. I'd say I-2 is really where it gets decent. 6-K is way above the rest and I is decently above 6-K.

Ooh, I have a lot of opinions on this. I guess I'll do this by game...

2001 (AA) - Core is a really solid song. I think it's this and Suspense that have the most usage throughout the series. Maybe Logic & Trick. It's so applicable and carries such a cool vibe of like "the mystery thickens...and we're about to get into it".

2002 (JFA) - Haha, both middle and core are really more like Engarde music more than anything else. Middle is such a damn cool tune and is so nonchalant about it. Honestly one of the best non-court themes in the OT. Core is a lot less "mystery thickens" vibe and more sinister and feeling like you're powerless. It's perfect for 2-4. Core unfortunately gets overused in T&T and feels a lot less like Engarde's theme.

2004 (T&T) - Opening has always been kinda weak in OT, but T&T easily has the best of the three. Middle takes the idea of Core 2001 but blends that cool and nonchalant style of Middle 2002. It's a really good song.

2007 (AJ) - Core is a good idea, but eh. AJ has always been kinda the weird soundtrack. It naturally gets compared to OT and it clearly goes in a different style, but it's not quite good enough. AAI onwards feels like it really hits its mark.

2009 (I) - Investigations naturally has great investigation themes. Investigations has the best Opening by a large mile, but when compared to Cores and Middles, it falters a bit. It's a real shame the OT Middles are here. I probably would have voted 2009 Opening over a large majority of the other songs.

I love how it plays off on your knowledge from the first DR. In a lot of ways, it feels a lot like MGS1 -> MGS2. I love MGS2 so this works out well. The climax also really pays off. I like DRV3 more than DR2 at times, but I think plot-wise DR2 is easily the best.

It would be a 9 or even a 9.5 if it weren't for those first 3 chapters.

I guess Great Ace Attorney made up for area themes with People theme, eh.

Audience Chamber is a sleeper hit in the SOJ OST. One of my favorite songs from there. It's this perfect blend of mystery, ominous, and foreign that is just perfect for me. Night is really, really good. Layton night music is always so chill. It really is too bad Chamber is here too. Laboratory is pretty great. I definitely missed that from DD.

The others are mostly alright. The only one that I don't really like is Themis. It's thematic, but eh.

JFA is a weird one. It's a game that sorta sets it up for T&T to spike. There are plot elements that allow for T&T to follow through on. There is a bit of an overarching narrative. However, it's definitely odd in that the finale case is, in a lot of ways, a standalone case. That said, the finale case is really good because I think it really cements the characterization of the main cast. Phoenix, Maya, Edgeworth, Gumshoe, and Franziska all just get fantastic arcs that really remains as the cornerstone of their development. And I really like the Ace Attorney main cast a lot.

Generally a pretty worse set than the first day. I'm not sure if its nostalgia or what. I can tell that I'm generally not a fan of the GAA soundtrack, but maybe that will change when I play the game!

Difficult People is a really cool theme. I wouldn't be opposed to making a more "serious" or low-key people theme in every game in addition to a more lively version.

I'll give Farce Lively credit. It's probably the only song in both days that feels genuinely like a character's theme. Perfect song for Some Guy.

Lively DD is trying too hard. It feels like I'm in some cartoon. Suspicious DD also feels like it's trying too hard, but it feels more like a detective novel. Which...I guess that's appropriate enough. I also just like the instruments in Suspicious DD way more.

Again, maybe it's because I listen to SOJ's OST a lot, but SOJ's songs are both pretty good! Cheerful People feels like the next appropriate step to Happy People and Strange People kinda fits that more "low-key" people theme. Unlike Difficult People, it doesn't feel like it's telling the player in "hey, this guy is probably the culprit, right?". That said, I just like the tune of Difficult People too much.

PW1 uses a lot of silence in their areas. I definitely remember it being used in Global Studios and Gourdy Lake. I actually kinda like that. I'm a little surprised there's no area theme for 1-5 though!

Drew Studio is the Apollo Justice soundtrack at its best. Its more subdued and simplistic soundtrack works perfectly for making this place way more mysterious. I guess it is kinda funny that this music is used for it since it's just an art studio.

I always loved how iconic Kurain Village sounds. The instrumentation and the melody just work so well in establishing that Kurain sound.

I like Circus a lot actually! It really carries that "circus with a dark past" vibe. It just feels off, but not entirely. In my defense, I do tend to like carny music to some degree, probably more than a lot of people.

Gatewater is hilarious in that the Blue Badger theme works perfectly as a Disney-esque theme park, but I think it's pretty terrible as a song.

People songs have always been very whatever to me. It's probably my most apathetic of the recurring themes. I do appreciate that Eccentric is somehow the only one that comes back.

It's a little interesting that PW3 has no People theme. I guess every character has their own specific theme song in that game. Does Desiree use Happy People? I feel like she does.

The sequels do a great job of building and exploring the foundations of the first, which makes the first feel kinda hollow. On the other hand, the first one is...the first one. The intrigue of DR1 is really good and the cast is surprisingly adept at building up that intrigue. When you finish it and look back, a lot of that intrigue feels like a house of cards and doesn't have that lasting power. Still, I'll give it credit for doing a great job on that first playthrough.

I feel the same way. Listening to it, it really does feel like the GBA soundchip is the only thing holding it back. It's really obvious in 1 in particular. 2 and 3 do a better job of hiding/utilizing it better.

Pursuit's a weird one. There's a case to be made for each game having the best version...! Except maybe AAI1, where it feels like Cross-Examination Presto overtakes its Pursuit as its climactic song.

AAI2's OST and 6's OST are the main Ace Attorney OSTs I listen to regularly, so maybe that's why they naturally float to the top here. 1's OST is really memorable and iconic. Every song is just instantly recognizable and I don't even listen to it regularly anymore. All the other victory themes are just kinda unmemorable, but still good at their purpose.

4's victory song reminds me of a Pokemon town. 5's instrumentation bothers me more than it should, which is strange, because 5's OST generally has the best instruments of all the OSTs.

Investigations is ahead on this one. 6 is the only one I feel that can hang with them. Tricks & Baroque from Investigations 1 is just so good. I love how triumphantly Edgeworth it is.

L-E is close to being actually better than 1 if they kept it with the instrumentation at the beginning of the song.

The top 3 is well ahead of the rest. 3 in particular is low-key one of the best songs in 3's already incredible soundtrack. It's just like AAI's Confess the Truth in that its just incredibly evocative. 3-5's ending with Godot's breakdown followed by "The only time a lawyer can cry when it's all over" and immediately pivoting to the Court Begins theme is just so powerful to me.

It's kinda funny that 5's Court Begins music is more foreboding than 6-J's Court Begins music when their Courtroom Lobby music has the exact opposite vibe.

The answer is probably no. I think MGS is particularly well known because shooters and stealth games aren't exactly known for their boss fights. Plus, the ratio of unique or grand boss fights in MGS is fairly high.

I remember JFA's music being used in the courtroom for some scenes in T&T. The main one that sticks out is Mia telling Phoenix to tell the truth in 3-1. It works really well as like a more subdued Tell the Truth. Doesn't work as well as a courtroom lobby. It's a little too grand and solemn.

I think DD and SOJ really nail the Courtroom Lobby mood. DD's a little more optimistic and SOJ's a little more dark.

I'm always a sucker for the instrumentation used for Khura'in.

I'm usually a fan of mysteries and conspiracies. Ghost Trick's is OK. Once a certain character shows up, the game's story really kicks into overdrive and carries it into the end. Before then, though, it's not too amazing.

E2-4 is a really weird case. I have it pretty lowly. Courtneys face-turn and Edgeworth/Amnesiac Kay only goes so far. The actual murder is pretty blah and E2-4 feels like a weird set-up for E2-5, which...honestly is a lot of a case already.

Ema's good. I wouldn't mind her as S tier. I originally ranked her as A for her 1-5 appearance, but I think her design actually fits much better as her adult design. She's particularly interesting, because I think she and Gregory are the only characters I ranked higher using a chronological later appearance. 1-5 Ema just looks weird to me now!

It's probably Shih-na, yeah. Nothing too spectacular. I actually like Shih-na's first breakdown where she goes back into Yew-style laughing. Definitely a "holy shit" moment, especially with that Confess the Truth.
