I think it's fun and insightful. I've done a lot of personality test and MBTI is the one I feel has the most depth and breadth to it. I recently learned about the shadow functions and was surprised at how applicable it was. I've seen a couple of other close friends who took MBTI somewhat seriously and liked how it described them. I definitely would say it's a lot better than zodiac signs and the best of the personality tests. That said, I don't think there's much to say about it once you're done and I wouldn't spend any money exploring it further.

Machi (AJ) - I'm biased because he looks like Dave Strider. Light blue, yellow, and white is a winning color combination for me too. I guess he doesn't really look much of a foreigner, but I think he has the piano player look down.

Alita (AJ) - If you fix her smile and her exposed armpits, she's a pretty easy A. She doesn't really mesh well with the Kitakis, but then again, there's no real good design philosophy with the Kitakis in general anyways. I think she's a B on a good day, C on a bad day.

Shipley (DD) - He's a pirate victim. Kinda similar to Russell Berry, in that he's a circus victim. They're a victim, so the design is all they got and their design is...well...if you asked an artist to draw "pirate" or "ringmaster." Pretty much a C!

Norma (DD) - Norma has some kind of trope-y design, but it's one that's used pretty rarely. I'm not even sure what to call it, but I know it's based on some celebrity. I'm feeling some kind of mix of Amelia Earhart or Marilyn Monroe or Lady GaGa. In any case, it's a look I've always really liked. I always give extra points for unrepresented designs that buck the trend and Norma does a good job of that.

L'belle (DD) - I get it. The joke is that he's horribly ugly despite claiming he's all about beauty. It doesn't justify his bad design. Somehow, I think the thing that bothers me the most is his really boxy suit.

Apollo - Most of the main characters are an S, but Apollo is a rare misfire. It's just a bunch of small things. I don't like his hair spikes and I'm not a fan of how his hair is basically normal except the spikes. His animations also are probably the first to try too hard. His thinking animation and his damage animation bothers me the most (though, his damage animation is so bad that it wraps around to being funny). I think his 5-4 alt design is completely fine and I'm glad that it somehow makes sense in-canon for him to dress like that. I'm not sure, Apollo just always feels a little too in the background. Thankfully, his actual character writing makes up for his design!

Acro (JFA) - I originally ranked all of these by game and then basically translated it into one big ranking. Acro definitely feels more like a "better A" than a "S", if you follow me. That said, I think it's pretty good. Acro feels like a breath of fresh air from 2-3 in so many ways and the design plays big into that. He has a much more subdued design than the rest of the circus performers. I generally give points to characters that buck general design trends (disability, overweight, etc.) in non-trope-y ways and I think Acro is a solid example of that.

Alba (AAI) - Alba's wonderful. Both E-5 ambassadors have strong symbols and ensignias that generally play into their design, but they also have a larger concept beyond that. Obviously, the "military general" design is what catapults Alba to S. It plays really, really well with Alba being this absolute brick wall to crack down. I like the idea of his breakdown, but wish it was better executed.

Huang (AAI2) - This is another example of a "better A", but Huang is a really simple concept done well. He has a really striking lion design and after a simple bout of Logic Chess, he gets completely deflated. It's a simple gag, but a really effective one. What really sells Huang is that knowing that he's a body double who always felt inferior to the actual Huang makes the pretty simple gag actually really meaningful.

Garan (SOJ) - I dunno, I'm not really feeling it. Her queen look feels a little too much for my taste. I feel like you need to be able to just see her and instantly think "yes, she's the all-powerful queen of khura'in" but I don't get that vibe of all. I can't stand her prosecutor form. It's just....yeah, no, it makes her feel more of a joke than anything else.

I can go on about SOJ designs, but I generally like the overall look of Khura'in, so a lot of them just naturally go to the top for me!

Which cast dressed the best?

I love talking about character design and I love Ace Attorney. This was a natural conclusion, especially since the board has been doing an Ace Attorney retrospective leading up to Great Ace Attorney. I don't really have enough interesting comments to justify a ranking thread, so I just put together a tier list. The original idea for doing this is looking at how Ace Attorney's character design really changed from game to game and it made me think which game's cast I enjoyed the most in terms of design.

The results? Ace Attorney has really good character designs. For such a large cast, most of the characters are hits as opposed to misses. The bad character designs I think are pretty universally agreed upon, but I don't think we really appreciate the solid design work of most of the characters. I think my favorite is still PW1 because of how natural it looks. I'd say PW2 is also fairly natural, just with some unique settings giving us more unique designs (Kurain Village, Big Berry Circus). PW3 is really where the design begins to really...stand out and get more wacky with character designs. AAI kind of brings it back to normalcy for a short while but everything kinda gets out of hand until SOJ. It was just really interesting to do this project.

A few notes before going to the ranking.

  1. Each character is ranked on a scale according to their placement (main character, one-time character, unimportant victim/background, important victim/background). A badly-designed main character is going to be tiered lowly compared to a well-designed main character. Likewise, a well-designed victim is going to be tiered highly compared to a badly-designed victim.
  2. Some things I considered when ranking for character design: colors, clothes, overall concept, some sprites/animations, iconic (main character-only).
  3. Some characters go through transformations. To make things less messy, I only included one "version" of each character (with the only exception being Phoenix vs. Hobonix since it's such a radical departure). I kept transformations and alt versions in mind when ranking the characters.
  4. I can't remember PLvPW for the life of me, so I kept it to strictly characters that show up in the 4 court cases.

I'd be happy to explain my reasoning for any character!

Rookie Crusher Payne is excellent. He definitely plays a major role in how good 3-1 is. I'm pretty glad that all other X-1 cases seem to keep the incompetent prosecutor. It really makes 3-1 Payne stand out. His breakdown is honestly perfect, especially with how subdued Dahlia's is.

As the Wellington fan, his damage animations are pretty incredible. His breakdown, less so, but I do appreciate how it works with Bach.

I think Engarde is fine, but it's Franziska or Phoenix for me. Phoenix's breakdown says it all. It's a shame they use it as the series goes on! Franziska is a rare moment of vulnerability. Until her scene in 3-5, it's really the main thing that makes me appreciate Franziska as a character.

Rayfa may have gotten my vote, but that might just be because I played 6-3 recently. I do think making her an assistant sped up her face turn in 6-5, certainly better than Nahyutas.

Im a little surprised at Kay. Shes fine but I always felt she did not mesh well with Edgeworth. That said with AAI2, Amnesiac Kay in E2-4 really strengthens the bond between Kay and Edgeworth and does wonders for her character. A solid choice in the end, but the journey is a little rough.

Trucy is good if you ignore her antics. Ema...I have not played 1-5 in forever, but she seems fine. The other characters are good but arent really utilized well enough.

Im going with Gumshoe. He works well with Phoenix, he works well with Edgeworth. Hes always just a delight to have around.

Seriously this. I think my biggest issue with Nahyuta is that it feels like a retread of old ground. I feel they could have gone a lot of different places, but we somehow got one of the more boring results.

Oh, this is tough. It's Mia vs. Apollo for me. I'm not a big fan of older Mia, but I love Young Mia. She kind of has Athena's energy but channeled in a really determined Apollo-like way. Meanwhile, Apollo is just a really good example of the "only sane guy" that everyone loves to rile up. Plus, he's just really likable. I think it's a Mia vote.

I want to vote Athena, but 5-3 isn't enough to carry her. I hope AA7 gives her at least 1 and a half cases. She needs to fly!

It's kinda interesting thinking of each game's set of culprits. I don't think OT has an amazing set of culprits, but they really nail down the epic culprit concept. When they go high, they aim for the moon.

As a player, I tend to live pretty in-the-moment and it works pretty well for Ace Attorney. I rarely predict twists before they occur and that one is a pretty solid example. I think it makes for a more enjoyable experience.

Always love an Ace Attorney playthrough topic. I'm not sure how you're able to remember your thoughts and actions of previous cases while you're playing another case, but the write-ups are good!

AAI2 definitely suffers from being...long. E2-2 is somehow the worst offender because at least all the other cases justify their length. E2-2 is just long for the sake of being long. It's the dialogue too. Not only is there just a large cast of notable characters who need to say their piece, but there's kind of an annoying thing of characters repeating things over and over. I can't tell you how many times Edgeworth is threatened with losing his badge.

It's always funny that everyone immediately knows that Roland is the culprit because she clearly has some sort of animation gimmick but only 2 animations when you see her. It's a shame too, cause E2-2 is one of the better cases of not knowing who the culprit is.

Honestly, all of these victims are pretty good. Each victim here adds some dimension of character and an interesting twist to the case. A huge step up from the X-1 and X-2 victims.

I learned about Ace Attorney from Board 8...I remember reading a CYOA. I remember having really distorted views of certain characters, like Edgeworth as kind of a burly, unrefined bully and the Blue Badger as a superhero. On a whim, I put it pretty low on my Christmas list (I was still pretty young in 2005!) and I ended up getting it. I remember M&L: Partners in Time was my top request and PW1 blew that out of the water.

I definitely followed a lot of PW promotional stuff after playing through all of PW1, learning a ton about PW2 and PW3, probably more than I should have. Even played the fan translation of 3-1 (dolores willows fans, where you at). I didn't see any sort of visual promotional material on PW1 and I was pretty tuned in on gaming news.

Yeah, this one's pretty clear. Even if you remove 1-2, I think E2-2 is pretty clearly above the rest. Turns out that victims are a lot more interesting when you have a case to know them!

Take out both obvious candidates and this is fairly difficult. Most of these victims have a big shroud of mystery over them, even after the entire case is over. I do like 4-2 Meraktis, who really took an active position in the case. I appreciate the victims who aren't innocent at all. It's always a nice turn of events.

A surprising amount of solid name puns for the Case 1 victims. I've always been a fan of 5-1. She's also seems like she would be a pretty likable character. Just as much as a bro as 3-1 victim tbh.

I don't remember a thing about E1-1's victim other than Portsman calling him Jim all the time. ....Which I just understood is an additional pun.

I've been thinking about this one for a while. I think it's 3-5. Godot's good, but prior to 3-5, he would have been "just" another neat prosecutor with a gimmick. 3-5 is what elevates Godot from a great prosecutor to a great character. It casts both a sympathetic light to Godot while also showing why he is such a flawed character. It's really Dahlia/Misty's murder that gives Godot the opportunity to have all those dimensions.

1-5 is, of course, great. I kind of think of 1-5 as the first post-trilogy case and, honestly, 1-5's culprit stands among the other epic culprits of the AA trilogy. I like the post-AA trilogy games, but they tend to miss more than hit with epic culprits. E2-5's culprit is also really great. I'm really glad to see Ace Attorney go all-in on a chessmaster sort of character like other murder mystery games. Keyes doesn't get too much time to shine since he's basically a nothing character in E2-2 and he only shows up in the final scenes of E2-5, but he makes his scene. Great backstory, great animations, and just a strong character all around.

I'll give a shout-out to 3-4 and 4-4. 3-4's Dahlia twists the knife by getting away with her crime. I think I like her 3-1 appearance a little bit more, but yeah, it sets the scene up for 3-5 well. 4-4's Kristoph is one of the bigger highlights of AJ, especially the actual crime of 4-4. It's very...Kristoph. Plus, devil hand and Super Saiyan, they went all out on animations for him.

just finished 13 Sentinels last week and Im glad you finished this! It was a trip and definitely worth it.

Im not sure if I agree with Ogata scenario #1 since its mostly a little low-stakes in the story, but I definitely loved the Groundhog loop. Okino/Hijiyama and Okino #1 character is A+.

6-3 is interesting. I definitely like the motive and backstory of the Inmees, but I think Tahrust carries that really hard. He'll win victim for sure.

wait, if we're doing background cases (ala DL-6, etc.), does that mean we get background victims too

As someone who has never played Yakuza and has only played Judgment, I'm pretty happy. It was difficult talking to all my Yakuza friends, because none of them has played Judgment, surprisingly. I loved Judgment.

Hopefully this gets more people into Judgment. I didn't play Like A Dragon, but I like RPGs just fine. And if I wanted more brawlers, I have the rest of the Yakuza series.

Really interesting choices. I'm not sure who to even vote for.

I think it's tied between 5-3, E2-3, and L-3 for me. 5-3 is a pretty simple character, but executed well. Very memorable culprit. I think the way E2-3 is structured makes the culprit much more memorable. Seeing both Edgeworths take down Gustavia as a generational villain is just damn cool. L-3 is really good as a sympathetic character and the ending is so strong and emotional. I think it has to be L-3.
