I wonder what the full story was. Is it as simple as the iHOP manager hired her with no intention of paying her, or did she falsify her information and then the manager found out when (s)he entered her information in the system to generate a paystub, and wasnt sure how to handle it?

He made a mistake, while drunk, and got punished for that mistake. I do believe, again for this one incident, the punishment was reasonable.

The guy doesnt seem like a good moral upstanding officer, since the article randomly alleges that he promoted a member of his own family above someone else, but for this one act, I think he was reasonably punished for it.

Article says he was drunk when he said those remarks. This also happened back in 2017. Those are the reasons why he probably only got away with a demotion and ~180 days of no pay.

I think thats a decent punishment, for this one incident (half a year of no pay, and demotion for something said while drunk).

What if you live in Texas, where there is no income tax, and you just pay federal taxes on your contributions to your Roth IRA/401k, then when you turn 65, you retire and move to a high tax state, like California, then withdraw?

You pay no taxes to CA for that withdrawal?

$10k a week. And they don't report it to the IRS they add a flag to your account in case you are under investigation by the IRS and the bank is questioned about your account. There's no reason you'd need to deposit more than even $5k a week if you came into this much money at once.
No, they report it:
https://www.occ.treas.gov/topics/supervision-and-examination/bsa/index-bsa.html

Under the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), financial institutions are required to assist U.S. government agencies in detecting and preventing money laundering, such as:
File reports of cash transactions exceeding $10,000 (daily aggregate amount)

It would be incredibly easy to deposit all of that money into your account over the course of a few dozen weeks without setting off any flags too. Reporting it would be foolish unless you absolutely do not want a free $100k.
Not really. Regularly depositing large amounts of cash compels your bank to report it. Any deposit over $10k also compels your bank to report to the federal government as well.

These performance rankings are often against your peers. You don't get a high ranking just for doing your job. You gotta go above and beyond.

I don't fault her for not being comfortable there anymore, or finding better opportunities elsewhere. But no need to throw your employer under the bus after they already dealt with the issue for you.
Yup. The first half of the article, i thought this was going to go somewhere else (like Google tried to cover up and stuff, as they did in the past).

people that are going to tell you that you are wrong have no idea how any of this works but a lot of confidence about how everything should work
So to clarify on how things work for engineer performance ratings (from my experience at working for three different large companies as a mechanical engineer):
  • You are compared to other engineers at your job level, regardless of age/tenure.
  • Your job results (letters issued, money saved, time saved for field work, etc.) are metricable and you write this up.
  • In the end, a rating between 1-5 is handed out. This is handed out as a bell curve through the entire department. So for every 5 someone gets, someone gets a 1; etc.

Unless she was doing work on vacation, it isn't something that should be held against someone.
Taking vacation = no work progressing. Performance rating depends entirely on your work progressing.

If youre taking a couple weeks here or there, it shouldnt affect your rating; but if you take a couple weeks during critical times, or taking a massive time off? You bet your ass youre not getting a 5/5.

If she's denied a promotion because of her sex, that's discrimination no matter how much she's making.
It seems like shes framing it to make it look like that, but taking three months off and then still expecting high performance rating, especially at a fast-pace and highly visible position like Google, is ridiculous. Then getting a normal rating, then asking for a promotion, is doubling down on the ridiculousness.
