That was the ps3. The ps2 was the rpg with a side of variety pack console.

It wasn't a casual console so much as it had something for everyone. That's a good thing for gaming.

Also, all consoles are mindless time sinks.
PS3 and 360 both doubled down on it because it was what PS2 was and what made it work.
Glass half full/half empty on the something for everyone part. I'd take a game console that was all game over one that was general entertainment spread much thinner.
I'll probably always see it as the running start on the path to the mtx ridden/nonfunctional with day 1 patch/interactive movie mess we ended up with.

How exactly was the ps2 more casual friendly?
It was the mindless guns and graphics console, the shovelware factory of its time. The standard came collection you'd expect from a PS2 enthusiast was GTA, generic shooter, football/sports sim, generic realistic car simulation, a few movie tie ins and occasionally an RPG or Kingdom Hearts that they'd try not to be overheard discussing.

Not saying there weren't good games but they were way off in the background.

Agreed.
There was encroaching darkness in the form of Sony harnessing the forbidden power of casuals with the PS2.
Which was followed with total darkness when Nintendo fought back in kind and unleashed the full might of the casuals with the Wii.

Other than that Gamecube was the happiest time.

The gameplay's pretty solid but the campaign doesn't lend itself well to replays.
Mercs is the best part, it's completely dominated by this one grenade glitch if you're after high scores but aside from that it's a lot of fun to just put some background sound on and play with the combat system. Mercs has a bunch of costumes with different loadouts but the odd thing is in this one you can't use the different costumes in the main game. Pirate Leon does not care for the adventure, he just wants to destroy.

They toned down the power tripping a little, instead of infinite ammo being like it was before you have to reload your clip from your endless supply now. Co-op on pro difficulty, infinite ammo disabled and agent hunt on is more fun anyway. Player controlled enemies that drop first aid sprays is hard to say no to. The counter system is basically there to fill in for infinite ammo anyway, a lot of them are insta-kills, buy you a sec of invuln time that a partner can act on and even though they drastically nerfed their ability to hit multiple enemies with one swipe, it's still possible.
Ustanak was super fucking cool and I wish they'd integrated him a little better. More player controlled Ustanak opportunities for agent hunt coulda been pretty metal.

5 > 4 > 6 >>> the walking simulators
Never played Revelations, thought about it for years but kept my distance because it looked like they sucked a lot of the fun out.

This sounds like a botched supervillain plot to make resources last by shrinking almost everything.
Or Attack on Titan with unusually small victims instead of unusually large aggressors.

Everyone'd be too small to operate a gun so you'd have a period of hand to hand combat or staged accidents being the only form of combat.

ViewtifulJoe
02/05/22 7:43:28 AM

Sheva is the best option here by a mile. Even with the big handicap you gave the other two by using the default costume and not Fairy Tale or Business. She has a mercs loadout with a handcannon and 5 gold eggs (5 full health bars and they all stack on one inventory spot, man), can do spinning jump kicks, will happily follow you around with 8 first aid sprays and a longbow to keep you safe and healthy and she got to meet RE5 Wesker in person which is has to be some sort of blessing, enlightenment or misc good luck spell. Never forget Chris assaulted that boulder for her. You don't do that for just anyone.

Shiva doesn't talk which sucks and she probably radiates cold which I don't need because it's winter already. She would probably attract a lot of negative attention just by being some sort of ice demon that shoots ice blasts. She also might try to make me attend one of those Yevon temple trials which I'm not in the mood for. Non-verbally. I bet that's not obtuse and tiring.

Sheeva is from the cartoonishly evil MK dimension where people tear each other limb from limb over small disagreements. I'm not even going for the easy cosmetic insults. She probably has little to no concept of empathy and has values wholly incompatible with what you'd want. Last time I checked her moveset sucked, getting taken clothes shopping with her would be an absolute ordeal, she's probably not very interesting to talk to and probably puts way to much effort into trying to sound tough. Any ideas in your head about what four arms could do will probably only lead to frustration when she either won't or can't understand and reciprocate.

Sheva could also defeat both of them because the RE5 infinite rocket launcher is out of control in the best way.

Art and Covid news somehow. I'm disgracefully bad at drawing things but it is kind of rewarding to make some small progress in a puzzle game kind of way. Covid I try to check in on a lot because 1 it's nice to see actual news on the news for once and 2 it's still doing numbers and I shouldn't take my eye off it.

It was music until very recently, I think I just hit that point where I've listened to the thing I like too much and it's started really losing its lustre.
It would be video games if they were still good or some of the older ones had good playerbases. Would be nice to find a good long source of background noise to prop up the ones that've gotten stale too.

Bloodborne being stuck on PS4 is one of gaming's biggest sins. The performance really tanks in some areas, and hasn't gotten a next gen touch up. It's actually the only reason I cant get rid of my ps4, or I would have traded it in for some cash towards a series s ages ago

Bloodborne really needs to come to PC
Back when it had some hype yeah it was a real shame. At this point it looks like Dark Souls with a dash, a much less interesting world and a heavier insistence that you must adhere to the playstyle it's picked out for you. It's weird but I could go either way, if it helps them with their looming buyer's remorse, keep it.

Capcom though, an entire lineup of IPs to go back to getting this treatment would be disgraceful.

Ill agree about the replay value thing. But there's a large amount of gamers that don't replay games. So, not everyone is looking towards that and letting it effect their initial play. The rest, you're just blindly against something. I don't see how LoU, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima etc. is dumbed down in gameplay. You'd have to only be focused on what's not in those games and completely ignore how well made what is in it is. Complain about stuff that wasn't the the point from the start.
(Power rangers pose) Go go well-intentioned brain damage ramblings.

That's a terrible demographic to want to be part of. The interactive movie crowd. People who buy it once for the pre-release hype, walk from start to finish on easy or maybe medium difficulty then throw the thing out and get in line for the next shiny movie. I shouldn't suddenly turn around and put the current corrupt industry meta right up there with the actual good video games just because it's allegedly doing well by the new shallow ruleset it's come up with. Recognising something is all bells and whistles and responding by going "Oh but they're nice bells and whistles, that one's gold and that one looks silver but it's actually that rainbow oil spill color if you look close." does not sit right with me.

I am focusing on what's not in them because what's lost in exchange for what's gained is a seriously raw deal. Why would you trade your extra game modes, difficulties that go beyond bullet sponges and higher spawn rates, unlockable characters, dumb fun cheat codes and all that for talk about experiences, patronisingly easy modes for people who literally come for the one-time-movie, paid alternate skins and of course graphics which do nothing to the game and will be outdated sooner than later. You don't even need to buy the thing to look at the graphics.

Most the gameplay is your average point and shoot, mash the button for the QTE, never stop mashing if it's a beat em up because you don't want gameplay stopping players from experiencing the immersive cinematic experience, that'd be gatekeeping and that's hashtag unlit. Pick up the ladder, walk around with the ladder, set it down. Good. You will now be administered your reward, the characters will talk at length. I point out Resident Evil but I should be getting at more of the survival horror genre, if you know what's going to jump out when and where in a game that prides itself almost entirely on atmosphere to the detriment of the gameplay well then that's a one and done right there. You probably another playthrough on the samey higher difficulty and one extra playthrough with the one hit kill gun and that's only if there's any catharsis to it. God of War maybe but that had nowhere to go but up, that was real deal mash the punch button to unsatisfyingly stunlock crowds monotony.

Brain damage rant yes but I wish this shit would stop getting not only a pass but treated like video game royalty. They see every other cut corner, slight graphical/framerate fault, greedy dlc shenanigan, broken launch but somehow the all-hype-no-substance triple-a not-a-game-we-do-not-use-the-word-fun streamer bait gets a pass.
I wish video games would hurry up and either get better or repulse me to the point I'm finally ready to just walk off.
