Can someone explain mining to me like I just learned what a computer was yesterday? it's computers competing to compute the "lowest" sha256 hash (see: with the most preceding zeros) in a certain timeframe. it's been years since reading the paper, but if i recall, the information passed to the hash function includes datetime, certain information about the miner's address (private key - or was it public key? - hash), previous block, etc. this establishes a computationally verifiable "winner" to the rest of the network that cannot be falsified, and becomes the basis of the new block. because it is very computationally complex to do, it's extremely difficult for hostile actors to inject fraudulent blocks (and thus transactions) into the chain and thus alter the ledger history without somehow computing far faster than everyone else in the network, at least in larger networks. anyway, the winner is awarded newly issued tokens by the network as a reward for securing the blockchain, and depending on the network in question, entitled to collect transaction fees for all transactions included in the newest block's timeframe. transactions are usually prioritized by fees posted. so in short, mining is basically the motor that powers a self-perpetuating network establishing cryptographically secure consensus on the date-time of ordered events. --- |
