Main reason I said NES/SNES/ESIS is cuz older games tended to be more mechanics driven than plot driven.

It could just be me, but Legend of Dragoon is about the same gameplay as the Mario RPGs - turn based combat with timed hits

It's not a binding agent there, either. It's also not really necessary; all a pie crust needs is flour, fat, and water. Anything else is just for extra flavour.

Had another idea for a story: You have a very very strong girl, like I don't mean superhero strong I mean can easily be an Olympic contender if encouraged... like 6'4" and 200+lb of muscle; Her parents don't mind her being an athlete in college, but would prefer she take up a science... but what the girl wants is to fight; like, she wants to do MMA but her parents are definitely objecting to that.

So she joins an underground fight club... and other stuff, I guess

I found all the weapons in 3U to be very solid and balanced (except for slime which was OP), and in 4U they also felt very balanced even though the Insect Glaive and Charge Axe felt more powerful for less effort (but that was just impressions based, mathematically it's very fair)

But in World I found the Insect Glaive, Charge Axe, Hunting Horn and regular Bow to be very underpowered... and even unfun in the case of Hunting Horn and Bow (I think their speeds were lowered but given higher motion values)

I can't be sure, it could just be my gameplay style

I used to stream... (and due to laziness my streaming kit is still set up and covered in dust), no one watched so I stopped.

I made 2 attempts, one at A9 and one at A5. Since I went in blind the A9 one I lost (2 deaths were spawn-kills so that wasn't fair. In the A5 attempt I got half-way through the final phase and only lost cuz his Earthen Corridor happened to be on the map edge so there was literally no escape

I think Factorio might be the closest thing but not sure since I haven't played it.

Basically, the plot is that it's a Tower Defense game... but a tower pretty much always becomes a township over time due to safety, maintenance, anti-sabotage, etc.

So, you start in this town and are attacked a few times... you don't need to control that part yet, gotta ease into it. You notice the town is unlikely to survive the next attack but you don't exactly have the resources of the king to upgrade towers yourself, so it becomes a trading game; You grow plants, or mine material, or hunt monsters (basic survival caz stuff) and realize it will never be enough, not by yourself. So you start to build roads, arrange caravans, trade with neighbouring tower towns.

After that it just is a matter of scale...

Also the King is a moron and is putting towers in stupid places, maybe if you trade properly you can make the logistics more sensible

Rise just came out if you wanna dump a load of cash, although 3U has a lot of goodness in it and it has a unique swimming mechanic not used in any other Monster Hunters (although many people don't like it)
