I didn't even realize before that the Poacher's Den doesn't open until Chapter 3 because I never had anything worth poaching prior to that.

Gen 1 in general just has a ton of garbage.

Pidgeot's only level up flying move is Wing Attack at lv 31 which only has 35 power in gen 1. Gust is a goddamn Normal type move because reasons. Ponyta doesn't ever learn a better fire move than Ember. The only Ghost type moves in the game are Lick at 20 power and Night Shade which does fixed damage depending on your level. Dragon also only has 1 move in Dragon Rage which always does 40 damage no matter what.

Idk wtf they were cooking back in the day.

Gen 1 always struck me as still being stuck in a more traditional RPG mindset where the vast majority of critters were just meant to be enemies / obstacles on your road to beating the game; and if you wanted to battle your friends it would probably just boil down to who had the stronger Mewtwo. After the game and PvP really took off they started putting more thought / balance into the metagame accordingly.

I'm using Errands to get my two mages up on their Arithmatic skills. I'm not in a hurry to have them, and that was always my least favorite grind in the old versions of the game.

I'm really stuck on trying to steal everything. Better get good at it for when I gotta steal them Genji items.

Haste + Ramza spamming Tailwind on your Thief will help immensely. Also try to position your units where you can wall in the enemy you're trying to steal from on all sides so you don't have to keep chasing them down; this will also give your Thief more turns by removing the need to keep moving (make sure and turn off Counter or any damage-causing reaction abilities). Status ailments like Sleep and Toad help immensely, if the target is vulnerable to them (honestly can't remember if bosses like Elmdor have the typical FF immunity to debuffs).

And always steal the weapon first so that the target deals less damage. I was lucky and stole the Blood Sword first try during the fight at the Gallows with Gaffgarion, which all but trivialized the battle by taking away his sword tech.

So I'm at the battle where Tietra is killed by Argath, and I'm finding it incredibly difficult. I only have 4 units, and the enemy has at least twice that many.

I usually put my mage / healer in the same group as Ramza, hang back for a couple turns and buff (Haste and / or Shell if available, Focus otherwise) while one or both of my fighters in group 2 move around the back of the fort to join Ramza (sometimes I'll leave someone who's quick and can cover a lot of ground to move around the other side). Try not to cluster the main force too much. Everyone should have Battle Boots and Move+1.

Let Delita go and get himself KO'ed (hopefully dealing a little damage in the process), then when the enemy starts closing in, rush in and take out the Black Mages. The battle should be much more manageable after that.

I liked how Fallout 4 tried to remedy this by having a huge list of names that at least one character would recognize and say

For Final Fantasy 10 my headcanon is that nobody knew what Tidus' name was and it eventually became too awkward to ask him

There's actually an instance where one of the Aurochs calls Tidus by name (text-only) if you talk to him while they're on Kilika. Not sure if that's the only instance in the game, and it might have been an oversight.

Pretty much. Burr may be left-leaning overall, but he's never been shy about throwing out a regressive / downright ignorant take when the mood strikes him. He hasn't personally offended me enough yet for me to write him off completely, but I don't blame people who've already turned their back on him.

Oh fuck these devs, seriously; as if Chocobos weren't already the most nerve-grating enemy class in the game, now they emit a heartbreaking baby bird death cry upon KO.

Apart from that, the overly-complicated character menu overhaul is my only nitpick thus far (and even then it's not nearly as bad in this regard as Oblivion Remastered was).

Visuals are lovely; really digging the smooth battlefield rotation and what appears to be a filter to give the graphics a canvas / painting-like texture. Gameplay seems fine as ever, still a long way off from most of the character-based QoL upgrades I'm interested in.

Just wrapped up Dorter last night, still have trouble seeing why so many people struggle with this one. Maybe people just hate random encs in this game? I never go into Dorter without at least a Black Mage, White Mage, and Knight / Archer.

Incidentally, this is probably the only playthrough I've done where the starting generics have good enough faith / bravery and interesting enough names that I'll actually keep them.

I'll never forget this one particular line of hers right after Kimahri attacks Tidus towards the beginning of the game, where she laughs and says "sometimes we don't understand Kimahri either!" For one fleeting moment she actually sounds like a real person, and I like to believe that was the VA's actual personality shining through before the director stepped in and said "no no no!! meek and breathy," and she immediately reverts back to that for the following line.

Artemis was pretty much useless across the board; hers were the only boons I actively avoided whenever possible.
