adjl 05/01/25 11:15:23 PM #27 | DirtBasedSoap posted... I was kinda 50/50 on it since theres nothing interesting aside from Mario kart and 4k botw/totk. When the Switch 1 launched, I figured I'd hold off on getting one for a little while because the only launch game I cared about was BotW. When launch day rolled around, though, I ended up grabbing one because I realized the 6-8 months I might end up waiting (if that, because I'd probably have bought one for Odyssey) wouldn't actually change much of anything about the price and therefore I might as well go for it and enjoy some Zelda right away. No regrets. I'm kind of in the same place with the Switch 2, only Mario Kart and DK are both reasons to be interested. There's no way I won't be eventually grabbing one (for whatever future Xenoblade has, if nothing else, because fanboy), and even if I don't get one at launch, I doubt I'll end up waiting long enough for a meaningful price drop or a better bundle than the MK one. The only reason to wait would be to wait out a new model, and given that I'm not terribly interested in either of the Switch 1's revisions (I like being able to play on the TV, so the Lite is out, and the OLED doesn't offer enough for me to consider paying extra), I doubt I'll be missing out on much there. The small launch lineup means I won't be heartbroken if I can't find one for a few months (much like I wouldn't have been overly disappointed if Walmart hadn't had several Switch 1s left when I walked in on launch day), but there are games I want to play and I've got little to gain by deliberately waiting, so provided I don't run into any major unexpected expenses that mean it's a bad idea financially, why not? captpackrat posted... It's funny how people complain about the manufacturers raising prices, but systems are still waaaaaaay cheaper than they used to be. While true, the issue is a little bigger than just inflation. Because wages haven't kept up with inflation and the cost of living has outstripped it, the amount of disposable income people have hasn't grown by nearly as much as inflation might suggest it should have. When we're dealing with a luxury like video games, that's the more salient consideration. It's also worth considering what alternatives exist. Spending $80 for Mario Kart when that same $80 would get you four months of Gamepass, 3-4 AAA games that are a couple years old, or 15-20 decent-sized indie games on sale is potentially a bit of a hard sell, which was not the case in a period where it was common for games to cost $80 and there weren't many cheaper alternatives (at least not without getting into rentals, bargain bins, or secondary markets). That's always a bit of a questionable comparison because there's no good objective way to determine the monetary value of a game, but when I've spent 33 hours playing Brotato and having a great time after getting it for free, $80 Mario Kart's got a pretty high bar to clear there regardless of what sort of objective evaluation we settle on. $80 may not be expensive compared to historical prices, but it's not being compared to historical prices. It's being compared to contemporary ones, and I can't fault people for balking at it in that context. Of course, hardware's a different story and you're quite correct that the Switch 2 is on the cheaper end of modern consoles, but the issue of inflation versus disposable income still applies. --- This is my signature. adjl 05/01/25 8:29:10 PM #4 | Yellow posted... I've never been in one, idk, I'd feel weird. I guess I could. It's quite a bit more common these days for dudes to go to hair salons. That's not to say there aren't still plenty of people who would make fun of you for it, but the staff won't be particularly surprised. It's literally their job to answer the question "how do I make my hair look the way I want it to?", and they're likely to be able to give you much better advice than you'll get anywhere else, including what will work best for your specific hair and which brands/colours to use. Saying that (take this with a grain of salt because I've just picked this knowledge up by osmosis and not put it into practice in any capacity), I expect the answer is going to be that you'll need to bleach your hair even further to knock out the remaining colours. Dying in general works additively: you change the colour of something by adding enough of a different colour to either mix with the existing colour and give what you want, or to cover up what's there. In either case, the colour you're adding needs to be as strong as or stronger than the existing colour to make a significant difference. White is literally the weakest a colour can be, though, with pale greys being only marginally stronger, so if you want that to be the dominant colour, there needs to be almost nothing left, and that can be really hard on hair. --- This is my signature. Sharing personal information gets considerably riskier the more you share at once, and being comfortable sharing each of those pieces of data in separate places over the course of months or even years (with the expectation that everyone involved will likely forget it shortly because they have little individual value) doesn't translate into being comfortable sharing it all in one consolidated file. It's been a lot of factors, mostly just boiling down to the fact that the way people consume gaming media has changed, and GameFAQs hasn't changed with them. The efforts it has made to keep up have been too little too late, and anyone who's still sticking around is doing so either out of habit or because they like an older style of social media (where pages actually end and you're responsible for finding all of your own content). VioletZer0 posted... Regardless the implementation of a cheat code needs to be justified within the scope of a project now a days and it is harder for game devs to hide them in the game as an easter egg. It's not that hard. Games usually have some kind of god mode built into them for testing purposes, and it's pretty trivial to turn that into an option in a menu somewhere instead of removing it entirely once testing is done. It may not be as actually fleshed out as something like Another Crab's Treasure giving you a gun that one-shots everything, but tweaking parameters is pretty trivial if you don't care about balance (which you don't if it's a cheat option). Even cheat codes like Big Head Mode usually just alter a couple parameters for character models, rather than being anything super in-depth. --- This is my signature. adjl 04/29/25 12:50:59 PM #3 | Surprisingly close to a majority. I expected a minority either way, but things really swung quite dramatically against the Conservatives. Liberals even got the lion's share of the popular vote, too, which hasn't been the case in the last couple elections. Polievre also lost in his own riding, which is just funny. fettster777 posted... I believe they did it on an Anti-Trump agenda too. Not specifically anti-Trump, but recognizing the overt threat Trump is posing to the country and committing much more strongly to fighting that than the Conservatives did. Prior to Trump's win, Polievre was generally pretty pro-Trump, which was a popular position when the prevailing sentiment was that people were tired of Trudeau being "too progressive" and wanted to "own the libs," in line with the broader global rise in far-right sentiment and being mad at "the woke" because some pundit told them to be. After Trump won and immediately started threatening annexation, though, being pro-Trump became Canadian political suicide. Toss in that Polievre's platform was little more than "Trudeau bad" and "carbon tax bad," and that Trudeau stepped down and Carney opted not to renew the carbon tax when April 1 rolled around (which I'm not a huge fan of, because the rebate program meant ~80% of Canadians made more from it than they spent and I was quite squarely in that 80%, but politics is politics), and he fell flat on his face. Basically, Polievre was a right-wing populist/nationalist, but then Trump both fanned the flames of Canadian nationalism and also forcibly decoupled it from the right wing. Carney barely had to do anything except distance himself from Trump (though it also helps that he's a banker by trade and has considerable experience managing major financial crises, which is a more appealing prospect for a leader at the moment than a career politician). --- This is my signature. The price is a bit more painful than I was expecting, but I was already considering dropping a few hundred on a new GPU (my 280X is like 10 years old now and wasn't exactly cutting-edge when I got it), and a Switch 2 will do more for my ability to play interesting new games than that would. --- This is my signature. And i know the CPC will sell out Canada to trump if they get a majority It's quite impressive how hard Trump flipped this election with his annexation nonsense. I work for Indigenous Services, so the idea of a conservative majority under Polievre was more than a little scary, but absolute worst case scenario I don't see him winning anything more than a minority at this point, and I'm okay with a minority. Conservative minorities in particular tend not to be able to make any major changes because the other parties (PPC aside, not that they count for much) tend not to align with them, so that dramatically limits the harm he can do. Minority governments aren't perfect, by any means, but I do appreciate them as a sort of pseudo-Proportional Representation in that they get more voices at the table and prevent any one party from having too much power. It's part of why the hate boner for Trudeau has been so silly: The Liberals have been a minority government since 2019. Trudeau didn't have the power to enact anything without bringing a solid chunk of the remaining parties on board; anything the Liberal party did in the last 6 years has been a joint effort. --- This is my signature. Between them, I think I'd say that TotK is the better game, but both have their merits and playing BotW first would probably be best because TotK fixes (or at least improves) some of the more annoying bits about BotW. adjl 04/27/25 12:56:57 AM #26 | Kallainanna posted... The basic points are thus: Yeah, that's all roughly in line with my understanding of the bigger picture. Queer bars are inherently a niche market to begin with, gay men are the most profitable to cater to (both because of their purchasing power and because, as I mentioned, gay bars double dip by attracting women (to the not-unreasonable chagrin of many gay dudes)). Toss in a decline in demand for lesbian bars because they're not as necessary as they were when there were fewer ways to safely find a partner (not to say there's no value in a space that caters to lesbians, but the landscape is very different now than it was even just 10 years ago) and a market that has to be more risk-averse, and I can understand why they'd be struggling. To be clear, I'm not trying to say that it's not an issue, just that I can understand how it's come about as the world has evolved. My apologies if I came across as dismissive. Kallainanna posted... Bisexuals have less. This surprises me. I'm not surprised that gay men are better off than the rest of the queer spectrum (because men), but I would have expected bi men to have an edge over them just because they can pass as straight men relatively easily (and I'm assuming straight men are better off than gay men, though admittedly I don't actually have a concrete basis for that). Do you happen to have any idea how that comparison breaks down if the bi men in question are in long-term relationships, depending on the gender of their partner? Intuitively, I would expect bi men dating/married to cis women to sit a little behind straight men but ahead of gay men, and bi men dating/married to men to sit behind gay men, but intuition is not factual information and I shouldn't jump to conclusions. Kallainanna posted... Society *is* more accepting, but it definitely still doesn't see homosexual relationships as being as legitimate, real, and desirable as heterosexual ones. Indeed. I'm mostly just meaning that it's a whole lot safer to be publicly in a homosexual relationship now than it has been for much of the past few decades. That, in turn, means there's less demand for bars and other such places that explicitly commit themselves to providing a safe space to be publicly in a homosexual relationship. Full acceptance is absolutely a long ways off and on terrifyingly shaky ground, but things have still improved enough to cut into the value offered by queer bars. For what it's worth, I do try to be fully accepting and I welcome being called out if I'm falling short of that somehow. Kallainanna posted... I'm annoyed, because always the expectation is that I'll do the work for others. It's exhausting. That's fair, but for colloquial purposes I tend to prefer to engage with people who have done their own research to find out what they know, rather than fully informing myself right out of the gate. There's a lot of information out there of varying degrees of credibility, and drawing on the experience of a credible person who has curated it already streamlines the learning process considerably. I do have a bit of a bad habit of framing that engagement as "here's what I already know/understand/believe, prove me wrong" and less as a passive invitation for people to share their knowledge (especially if I feel reasonably assured of my understanding), so my apologies for that. Surprisingly, years of arguing on the Internet aren't necessarily great for developing respectful conversational skills around sensitive subjects. --- This is my signature. adjl 04/26/25 11:10:10 PM #210 | Finished Xenoblade X DE tonight, as close to 100% as I care to get (which is actually a lot closer than I expected to manage). All sidequests done (even Blood Lobster, which I figured I'd give up on), all superbosses beaten except for the second one added by DE (I can beat it with my build, but it has a bad habit of randomly despawning when it gets pulled far enough to fight it on foot because one of its arts has it fly around a bunch, and I don't feel like repeatedly trying until I get lucky enough to have it not disappear or going through the hassle of fully equipping a skell to fight it), 100% of Mira surveyed, enough gear/augment farming to be happy with my build... I haven't farmed enough to fully optimize my build, I haven't tried out other builds, I could do some more farming for Fashionblade gear (I bought all the shop armours, but haven't farmed the remaining tiers), I haven't done any of the online-based stuff because I don't have an NSO subscription at the moment, and I'm still missing a few items in my collectopedia, but I'm satisfied with calling this complete. All in all, an excellent remake. Buffing affinity gain has made a huge difference in my willingness to actually try finishing all the affinity missions, making 100% sidequesting nowhere close to the slog I remember it being in the original. Quick cooldown is a major game-changer that opens up a ton of build flexibility and just generally makes it feel like the player has more control over combat, the new party members and their affinity missions fit in well, the new arts shake things up in interesting ways (not that longsword needed a buff >.>), the UI's been dramatically improved, and everything looks and runs great (aside from a few janky shadows here and there). I'm more than a little disappointed that the toggle for skell flight music is just to choose between the original, remixed, and instrumental versions, rather than to turn it off entirely, and I'd have loved to also be able to turn off Overdrive music (I don't dislike Don't Worry and Wir Fliegen, I just don't want them constantly overriding every other field and battle track), but that's ultimately a pretty minor gripe. As I mentioned before, mixed feelings on the epilogue. It wasn't necessarily the sort of resolution I wanted/expected, but it does at least hint at (if not outright provide) answers to the biggest questions that remained after X's initial release, it's a much more satisfying ending than it previously had (not that that's hard), and I'm definitely still interested to see where things go from here. I guess it's kind of inevitable that after leaving a cliffhanger open for this long, any resolution was going to end up being disappointing to a significant number of people because it wasn't going to line up with how they'd tried to fill in the blanks with ten years of speculation, but I think they did an alright job. I'd still say X is my least favourite Xenoblade, but it's still a great time and the remake has improved on that. YoukaiSlayer posted... Is that even possible on a left arm? I know left and right arms have slightly different pools of traits they can get. I thought you couldn't get ranged/melee attack up on one of them. Both Melee and Ranged attack are possible on both arms, just not the combo of Attack Up and Attack boost. Orphean left arms can get OD Count Up and Range Attack Up, C&C right arms can get OD Count Up and Melee Attack Up. For Ranged, you have the option of getting a right arm with Ranged Attack and OD Gain TP (Grenada), but there's no combo with OD Gain TP and Melee Attack. Between homosexuality being much more socially acceptable now (plus the most vocal homophobia tends to be male-centric and women can get away with more PDAs without people assuming that they're dating) and the emergence of online dating options to help find partners, there just isn't as much need these days for lesbians to have specific public spaces to hide in/find other lesbians. I expect gay bars are doing better because gay men tend to face more overt homophobia (creating value in a space that lets them hide) and also because women of all stripes like going to gay bars because it means they can go out with friends without having to deal with straight guys hitting on them, but lesbian bars serve a much narrower niche and provide a service that just isn't as necessary anymore. At least, that's my take. As a straight dude who never goes to bars and hasn't looked up any actual stats, I could be totally off base on every single one of those points. --- This is my signature. adjl 04/26/25 11:51:19 AM #206 | Yep, that's another option. It doesn't mesh well with reflect or resistance builds because you need some armour augments to support them, and there's still the issue of getting 3000 TP in the first place to be able to activate Overdrive for the first time, but it's a very powerful combo if you set it up right. Even without getting the full 3000, getting a chunk of your TP refunded means you can pop Overdrive 2-3 times before needing more TP, and paired with some Count Up that can help ramp you up much faster. Annoyingly, though, Luciel's been very stingy with a Left Arm piece that has both Ranged Attack and OD Count Up on it, so I'm stuck using the skill that serves the same purpose. I was at least able to find a Left Arm with Ranged Attack and OD TP Gain, which makes up for not having been able to find that combo for the Right Arm like I wanted (I've seen the exact trait combo I want three times, and every time it's been the left and not the right), but I'd still rather have Count Up on my gear so I can use that skill slot on something more damaging. --- This is my signature. adjl 04/26/25 1:09:11 AM #204 | dragon504 posted... You have any recommendations for using material tickets? I'd say the highest priority is 1 Golden Yggralith Heart for what's widely considered the best starting point for a postgame skell ( Aug-wise, if you want to make some Treasure Sensor XX to be able to cap out Treasure Sensor without taking up your party members' entire loadout, the Decrepit Wings are a pain to farm because the only reliable way to get them is from the level 91 Millepod in Oblivia (there's a level 65 one in Noctilum, but it only appears during thunderstorms), and you have to break its face so you can't rely on Core Crusher to help you fight it on foot (plus you have to wait for it to reach the big bridge to fight it on foot). Me, I settled for one Treasure Sensor X and therefore only needed 4, so it wasn't a big deal, but those are a good candidate for tickets if you want more than that. dragon504 posted... I just farmed up the stuff to make a arts: tp gain xx aug. It took a bit, but wasn't too crazy bad. A little late for this, but Arts Gain TP isn't a great option for a weapon augment. It can be helpful for getting up to 3000 TP to use Overdrive if you don't have any better options, but once you've activated it and gotten past 20 count, any purple art will restore 200 TP per hit (10 TP per count, so 1000 per hit at max count) and that will form the basis of your TP sustain in most builds. It's not useless, but you're probably going to be better off using those augment slots for something more damage-focused. In particular, having a total of five Appendage Crushers (you can get this on eyepatch armour to free up a weapon slot if you don't need your head slot to provide Potential) is a huge damage boost and pretty easy to farm, so that's going to be the best use of most of your weapon slots. The rest can be ranged/melee attack, weapon power (on weapons with higher power; I'm not sure exactly what the cutoff is, but you'll be better off with something else on weapons with weaker individual hits), or a utility option like OD count up or Secondary Cooldown Reducer. On a side note, the Hraesvelg's special flight mode (press B while flying) is really awesome and I recommend trying it out even if you don't actually end up using Hraesvelg more broadly than that. --- This is my signature. There is still value in keeping the FAQs and whatnot around for older/more obscure games that will probably never have wikis, so I doubt everything will just be killed off without saying anything. More likely, what will happen is that Fandom will figure out a different way to host that content, migrate it all, and replace GameFAQs as a whole with a splash screen amounting to "all the FAQs and stuff are at *link* now so go there instead." I doubt there'll be a ton of advance notice for that, but at least I don't expect that the site will disappear silently. --- This is my signature. adjl 04/24/25 2:13:39 PM #199 | The only immediate prerequisites are her quest in Sylvalum and Definian Downfall, though Definian Downfall has a ton of its own direct and indirect prerequisites (there are four distinct quest lines that lead to it, going back as far as chapter 5). It's also one of the harder quests in the game, with the boss at the end of it being really quite difficult if you don't have a solid build. I ended up doing it just after switching from Knife+Raygun to Photon Saber+Raygun (for Essence Exchange and reflect), and it took a few tries because I was still getting used to the new rotation. --- This is my signature. adjl 04/24/25 12:43:22 AM #197 | dragon504 posted... For treasure finder, does it work if I put it on my companions' armor? Was thinking of decking out my 3 teammate picks with treasure finder armor to boost drops lol. It does. If you give them each 5 pieces of the level 55 shop gear (requires Candid & Credible to be maxed out), that'll get you a total of 90% extra treasure sensor, which is just shy of the 100% cap. If you farm up the materials for one Treasure Sensor X augment (or two V augments), you can hit the cap without sacrificing anything on your character. That guarantees that you get a gold chest from every drop, which is generally a good thing (though holofigures can't drop in gold chests, so you'll need to ditch the Treasure Sensor if you care about collecting those, and some armour trait combinations might be harder to get from gold chests than from silver ones). dragon504 posted... The lack of hint on how to recruit this character in chapter 12 is annoying. The biggest hint I can give you without spoiling it is to look at the segment map for quest segments that don't match a quest you've been able to find. Depending on which quests in the chain you've completed, that should help you figure out what your next step should be.
They're by far the easiest party member to miss if you don't consult outside resources, and I actually don't even remember recruiting them when I played the original. It's kind of annoying, because they're the one that provides Beam Bomber and my Ranged Attack Raygun build was really lacking without that art (it's like three times stronger than Beam Barrage). If you want more details, I can give you a non-spoiler-free version. dragon504 posted... Wondering if I need to start the story quest to get the new character. You don't unlock anyone in chapter 12. I'm not sure off-hand if having started Chapter 12 will prevent you from doing other quests until you finish it, aside from the section that's behind an explicit Point of No Return. Chapter 13 will unlock the final character almost immediately as part of the story. --- This is my signature. It exists to keep people from skipping the last line of my posts. |

adjl 04/23/25 4:33:24 PM #13 | ParanoidObsessive posted... Depends on how you define "systems". It was a fairly common assumption that they deliberately shorted the NES Classic almost to the point of maliciousness. About the only other viable option was sheer ineptitude on an epic scale. I guess you could call the NES Classic a "system," but I wasn't including it in saying that. I'd lump it in with the limited-run novelty items like Amiibos that they do almost certainly artificially scarcify (I've decided that's a word). The supply issues for the Wii were just explosive popularity that they weren't prepared for, and the supply issues later in the Switch's life were a combination of increased demand due to the pandemic/Animal Crossing and the pandemic restricting their ability to adjust their supply. The Switch 2 is in a weird position where I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a ton of demand for it (even before considering the system/game pricing, the Switch 1 has a very sizable casual user base that isn't going to be rushing out to buy a successor that mostly just improves the graphics), but the popularity does seem to be there if the Japanese preorder stats are anything to go by, so they may have trouble keeping up with demand even with the efforts they made to pre-empt that. --- This is my signature. adjl 04/23/25 2:52:12 PM #9 | I noticed that the official Nintendo preorder request gives priority to users that had active NSO subscriptions and 50+ hours of total play time as of April 2. That seems to make sense as an anti-scalping measure (bots can still get in there faster, but amassing multiple accounts with $20 subscriptions and 50+ hours of play time is significantly more involved than amassing multiple accounts with no additional requirements, and making new accounts after April 2 won't work), though unfortunately it sounds like it's a free-for-all past that. As somebody with thousands of hours of play time but no NSO subscription, I'm a little annoyed that that's a prerequisite (especially because an extra few bucks apiece to split a family account between 8 bots isn't going to cut meaningfully into scalper profits), but it's good to see something being done to make sure systems end up in the hands of people that will actually play them. --- This is my signature. adjl 04/23/25 1:42:46 PM #7 | Salrite posted... And Nintendo's history of intentional scarcity With some things, but not so much with systems, and one of the main reasons it took so long to see the Switch 2 announced was that they were trying to ensure they could meet demand. They're still struggling to keep up, given the sheer magnitude of preorder requests they're getting (2.2 million in Japan alone, when the Switch 1 sold 2.74 million globally in its first month) and the fact that they're going to be scaling back their shipments to NA to reduce the risk associated with potential future tariff shenanigans, but I don't think there's any reason to suspect them of intentional scarcity. fettster777 posted... Probably will be like the PS5 debacle where the average consumer can't get one for like 2 years after release. In theory, it should be easier for the Switch 2 to keep up with demand now than for the PS5, since one of the big issues with the PS5 was supply chain disruptions due to Covid (compounded by aggressive scalping bots). In practice, supply chain disruptions due to tariffs are pretty likely, so who knows? --- This is my signature. It exists to keep people from skipping the last line of my posts. |
