generally speaking, as long as you try to limit or remove processed foods from your diet, and have a balanced nutrition intake you'll be fine.
yes, spinach is fairly high in oxalates, but that's also something your body makes on its own.

salt's another one that gets a big fear factor surrounding it. it's really dangerous in super high quantities, but it's insanely helpful in small quantities to help reduce dehydration (this is why lots of sports drinks have salts, so your body will retain the water more efficiently)

i think the internet tends to sensationalize things, cus if you write an article saying "if you eat 10 pounds of spinach a day and don't drink water, you'll probably get kidney stones" is gonna get a lot less clicks than "OMG! spinach does WHAT ?!?!?!"

anyway, if you're looking for some foods that can help cholesterol, look for foods with good amounts of niacin (vitamin b), so musrhoom, avocado, peanuts, potatoes, and stuff like that

fun, slow paced exploration game. lots of it's doing collectibles (like, collect feathers, collect shinies) but the animations and graphics are on point for a cartoony game, really pixar-y or disney-ish animation styles (for the cat, the ppl dont have faces they just pet you or get mad at you when you knock their phone out of their hand)

pretty fun overall if you like cats.
it's like untitled goose game in some ways, but it's more exploration oriented than goal oriented like goose game.

But all that aside, make a work time for you and give yourself a reward after
thanks, that's a pretty good way of reframing things.
esp the reward, i haven't been doing that when i work, it's just work then freak out and give up for a bit lol

i would try to get a little bit done at a time because even a little progress is still progress. But also remember that a lifetime is a long time and if youre not feeling inspired for something that should be fun, that you have a lot of time ahead of you to come back to it
thank you, your topics are actually what inspired me to keep working on the game more seriously, i was in like a limbo state of not really progressing for a bit so it was really cool to see someone else making their own progress :)

The minor things are always the hardest part to get started on because it doesn't feel as significant as making the big steps. Playing around in something else where you can still actually make something or be doing the "important stuff" is always much more appealing because it's the "fun" part. Especially if this isn't like, your job or you have a pretty vague due date that isn't like, right now, it can be really hard to push yourself to sit down for the menial tasks that also have to be done.

But in my experience, there isn't really an option besides forcing yourself to sit down and get to work.

Try something like a Pomodoro timer - which is basically set up a timer for ~15-25 minutes and exclusively work during that time, and you can take a break only when the time is up. Oftentimes after 20 minutes of actually working you'll have gotten over the big hump (which is just sitting down to get to work) and you'll just keep going for a while, and if not, you can take a 5-10 minute break, then sit down for another 15-25 minutes of work.
thanks, yeah not having a deadline or a boss/team who's depending on me to be punctual w/ getting stuff done is pretty tough, cus i'm not really great at setting dates for that stuff. if I do, I always push it back instead of going like "ok, no, not this time. i need it done by this day no matter what"

i'm gonna try that timer idea. another thing i have to do is turn off distractions which is difficult cus it's all done on the computer lol, but i guess having them turned off for 20 minutes is easier psychologically than thinking "i absolutely cannot watch youtube or whatever for the rest of today" cus my brain is gonna try and prove me wrong by saying "oh yeah? go on youtube right now. do it, i bet you won't"
seriously starting to think my brain has it out for me. lazy mfer. if my brain always had its way, i'd be like Bender in that episode of Futurama where he got turned into a human.

I am making a Pokmon rom hack and its at 16 hours long so and not even near done. I release it in installments. Im not sure how Ill feel when Im nearing the end, but what keeps me going is feedback from people. When there is a community of people who care about your work and want to see whats next, that makes everything easier imo.

If I was in your situation and the game is in a playable state, Id get a friend to play it and see what they think. If they really like it, then naturally you are gonna want to finish it and make it as good as you possibly can. Maybe that doesnt work for everyone, but thats my mindset.
that's really cool, which game are you doing a rom hack of?
and that's a good idea, i'm kinda shy about sharing stuff, but i think i'll ask someone to try it out. or even maybe join reddit or something so people can see it. i'm not really good at that stuff. i do like to give like programming or unity help if i can sometimes, like on the unity forums but i don't really post actual stuff i make.

By "90% done" do you mean it's actually 90% done or just you planned all of it and still actually need to like, develop it?
nah its 90% done, maybe 85%.
but yeah like everything from the driving, menus and selection, unlock conditions for cars, cars stats (like how fast it is, if it turns well, etc), the arrow that points you to the next spot, power ups stuff, scores/saving, sounds, half the music, and all the other things i forgot are either done or just about done. im not doing like achievements or anything like that cus i dont like those tbh
if it was how i originally wanted it, it'd be like 20-25% done lol but i removed a lot of features i wanted and just got it down to a small handful. like i had planned a deathmatch delivery mode where its like risk of rain with tons of power ups that stack, endless enemies that get stronger/more of them over time, and boss fights that were the competing restaurants that turn the building into a giant mecha you have to fight
i have like the basic aspects of all those in a working condition but then i was like "oh shit idk wtf this is even trying to be" and just made it simple-ish

my only advice is to focus on what you like and keep doing it and build a portfolio around that. no one's going to hire you for art unless you're a badass artist, no one's going to hire you for level design unless your levels are badass, etc. if you're into data and making procedural systems, then you should really just focus on that. don't think about 'releasing a game'. think about building yourself into a master of some focus. because when you get a job in the industry, you're only going to be focusing on one aspect, and you better be good at it.
thank you, yeah that makes sense. sorry if it was a lot, i tend to word vomit cus i'm not good at writing lol. i don't mind not being great at some aspects, i think that adds a quirky charm to indie games, but yeah there are some things that i'm way better at compared to others. maybe that's why i'm putting things off
I guess another issue is I'm juggling wanting a more regular game dev job versus trying to go it either solo or as a small team. so I guess the best thing to do is just stick with it.

LonelyStoner posted...
How long have you been working on it? Whats it about? Do you have any other people working on it with you?

I ask all this because creating my own video game from scratch seems like a daunting ass task that would make me extremely stressed.
a little over a year and a half. its like the game crazy taxi, but the driving is more like mario kart and instead of picking people up and taking them to their destination, you're a pizza delivery driver and will race other cars to get to the next destination and they'll try to slow you down/attack you but you can attack them back and leave traps and stuff. and its just me, i guess technically it's a team cus i'm not really great or patient with making 3d art, so all the buildings and car models are purchased assets. but like the actual programming, levels, characters, shaders, music and the rest are done by me

its pretty daunting but its also pretty fun.
idk, i'd say go for it if you're interested in trying. even tho i vented and complained a bunch in my post, i still really enjoy working on that game when i do, it's just that lately it's slowed down.

PerseusRad posted...
Right now, you have a clear goal, and when you finish, your goal will become muddled until you find another project. And on the other hand, you might fear that when you finish, itll be mediocre or even bad. But you cant know until you finish. And youll continue to be bottlenecking your own growth until you finish.

Its possible youll end up disappointed or frustrated with the end product, but instead of fearing that, figure out where things went wrong, and try to resolve those issue. Youll have more for your portfolio, and youll be better at what you want to do. Of course, this is all just my assumptions.
thanks, this is pretty good advice
i kinda have an idea for the next project, but 100% needed to hear the bottlenecking growth part.
and yeah, i think that i really need to change how i think/approach and see it like a learning experience that won't continue unless I keep at it

thank you

i'm making a video game, it's been going on for too long and i need to finish it. thing is, i'm really, really bad with consistency.

by all accounts, I'm like 90% done with the game. I have some tweaking to do, and am finishing up the background music and stuff like that. but a lot of days I just won't work on it at all.

I still use Unity daily, and will work on things... just not that specific game. What do I do instead of finishing? I'll make random shaders in hlsl, or weird tools that have absolutely nothing to do with my game.
like last week I made a thing that will allow my Polyend Tracker (music gear) to control a game through MIDI. that has literally nothing to do with anything but it's cool.
Or I made a thing that's basically a procedural music synthesizer using pure data to make procedural in-game music based on actions.. again, nothing to do with my game.
I literally spent 3 months doing 50 hours a week recreating all of my hardware synths in pure data. when will I ever use that? lol. if I wanna get those sounds, all I need to do is turn the synth on...no need for some weird pure data recreation by some crazy guy who lives at his parents house.

the game is like a crazy taxi clone but more kart-racer-y and with some combat like from twisted metal. but I'm so lazy JUST when it comes to working on that. I'll gladly find the motivation to work on anything but that.
ffs I even have a working, but barebones, GTA clone.... like... why??

I really don't get it. is it some weird psychological thing? am I afraid of finishing it and it turns out to not be good? am I afraid of finishing it and it turns out to be good, and then my future projects can't be that quality?

it's really annoying. I've made finished games in the past, but part of a team. this is a solo game, and I wanna sell it some day or at least give it away to free just so people can play it.
but whenever I open up Unity...instead of getting to work, what do I do? I make a bunch of stuff I may never use.

I'm sorry for the blog post. I don't like to get personal on here, and it was more of a vent but it's still frustrating.
worst part, is that I'm really, really hoping to build a portfolio or something so I can get a real gamedev job so I can afford to take care of my grandma so it's like it's very important to me to actually have something to show in that portfolio... and an unfinished game? how is that impressive? how many unfinished and abandoned games are out there, even by AAA studios?

ok blog post over, good night.
