I don't think we disagree as much as it seems. I would presume the only point of disagreement is the third point but you guys are really hung up on that bandana-- they really shouldn't be in love at that point (they have what, the Opera and the prison break at that point?) and it really is bad writing if they're supposed to be there. The only thing I really disagree with you on is saying it's fan projection to see hints of a potential romance between Locke and Celes in those moments. If the writers intended for fans to see those moments and think they might end up together, it's not projection. Are they "in love" with each other at those moments? Probably not. Do the writers believe some of the audience will think Celes is in love with Locke, and are they good with them assuming that? Absolutely. It's just not overt because you don't have any point in the game where Celes and/or Locke talk through their feelings for each other. Stuff is implied but never outright stated. Their relationship isn't a focus of the game, but it doesn't mean no attention is paid to it.
And the writers know the fanbase is going to ship couples, so they put stuff like that in there, even for couples that never actually materialize. Their intent may not match what they want the audience to think (which applies to aspects other than romance, of course, but that's what we're discussing here). "Will they/won't they" sells, just ask Friends or Moonlighting. The writers know what the audience will assume from that, just like they know what the audience will assume by the fact that Celes is there right after Locke revives Rachel, only for her to die again (as well as Locke saying "I feel lighter than air," suggesting the guilt he felt toward Rachel is gone now and he's not just looking at Celes as a Rachel proxy anymore). Like maybe they'll say their intention was never for Locke and Celes to get together, and that may be true. It doesn't mean they don't want the audience to think they might. I actually think young Ema (1-5 in particular) is pretty annoying a lot of the time. Her jokes often don't land and she has no chemistry with Phoenix. Grumpy Ema is fantastic though. The key the G&G Hard mode is realizing that anything besides attacking is a waste of time. Like you think you need to be healing on one's where you have limited units, but nah. Yeah, maybe this is why I didn't find it too difficult.
