I've been reading too. Just finished T*** quite recently myself as well. Put SC on hold to play other games like Persona 5 and NieR. Will be playing SC soon so this topic is a great refresher even though my memory of the game is still quite fresh.

Outstanding story and characters with an amazing OST. The pacing and barebones gameplay is the only thing it suffers from.

P5 is so much better that it makes you realize how amazing JRPGs can be when it hits all the notes.

FFXV is a very good JRPG with an amazing world but a flawed storyline which falls apart towards the end and feels unfinished like MGSV.

Daisoujou is indispensible in Nocturne but fodder in the Persona games. I can see why the Skeletal Monk is high up on everyone who has played other SMT games but as for Persona only, like I said, fodder unless Design matters more than usefulness.

I've never played Bayonetta games but based on the React videos Ive seen of it, it's just a button masher where you press attack over and over and it dazzles people with cool fight choreography.

I just like more to my games than that.

Unless you're playing the game on the easiest difficulty, you won't get very far with button mashing.

In hindsight I should have put Hyrule Warriors (even though I dislike the game) in place of NSMBU which is clearly getting SFFed to death here. It is not a bad game at all. It is certainly better than NSMB 1 and 2 at least and equal to NSMB Wii.

It is. Bayonetta 2 does everything that 1 does and better. The only thing you can argue Bayonetta 1 having, is a harder final boss on its highest difficulty.

When I played Bayonetta 1. I thought hmm... this game is great but the story sucks ass and the gameplay could use some polish. And the areas are super forgettable. A really good action game but nothing amazing.

When I played Bayonetta 2. I thought, wow! This game actually rivals DMC3 and Ninja Gaiden Black as the best action game made. The story was better and the gameplay and design was outstanding. The atmosphere also improved upon the original in ways I would have never even dreamed of. One of the best action games ever made.

Not gonna rank BotW because, first of all, I'm playing it on the Switch and second of all, I've only played about 10 hours of the game.

Also to be fair in the rankings, I didn't beat Xenoblade X and Hyrule Warriors. X turned out to be one of the most disappointing games after the high XC left off on. It became one of my most anticipated games during development only to end up disappointing me in ways I couldn't even imagine. I played about 15 hours of it before I realized it was nothing like XC and the story and characters were flatout lifeless pieces of carboard. Dropped it shortly but I do feel I should give it another chance in the future... when I have like zero backlog.

Hyrule Warriors is a laughably bad Dynasty Warriors clone (not that Dynasty Warriors is great) and I should have known better but it rests in the shelf where it belongs and I suspect it would remain untouched... forever.

ZombiU has been a major waste of my time that I want back but will never get. Beat it once and I'm forever done with it.

VIII has the best gameplay just because of the sheer depth and customization of the Junction system. You can basically play the game however you want and it's brilliant. Of course it is so easy to break the game with little effort but you can choose not to either. My most replayed game by far, even more than FFVII.

It is not about the prizes. I think it is more about bragging rights than anything. Even mine was a fun entry since I'm not a NA citizen and 97 winning would have guaranteed a Top 10 finish for me looking at the leaderboard today (I was at 17 yesterday).

This is more than just about money. It would have been immensely satisfying just being on the leaderboard at the end of the contest. It just sucks that it happened because 97 was handicapped in its pic presentation rather than being fairly beaten by the better year (which 2001 is just not in gamefaqs contest strength).

Anyways a lot of people received the short end of the stick with match pics this contest so I can't act like the only victim here.

He is not that stupid. Of course he did. He's been running these contests for years to know the ins and outs as much as any of the regulars here. 1997's obvious anchor FF7 is backed by Goldeneye (the second strongest game of the year) and SoTN.

Removing Goldeneye is an obvious ploy to shift things in 2001's favor because it is like removing Melee in 2001. Not to mention MK64, a relatively beloved game on the site is removed in favor of a lesser known Racing game.

Well 2001 lost Halo: Combat Evolved this round. Probably bigger than Golden Eye and at least on par with MK64

Goldeneye would absolutely destroy Halo on this site.

Do you have any "x-stats" , or sabermetrics to back that up?
keep in mind that Goldeneye has lost it's significance it had in the N64 era. Halo set the new standard for console FPS and most people these days would recognize the Halo franchise over Goldeneye or Perfect Dark.
This board might support your case but not the entire site and certainly not this generation of gamers as a whole.

Are you kidding me? Did you not see how Halo did last contest? If anything 2001 gained a lot more by not having Halo and replacing it with MGS2. Diddy Kong Racing is still one of the best selling N64 games, and even gets more love than Mario Kart 64 from some circles. I don't think it replacing Mario Kart 64 is a major deal, but GoldenEye should definitely be there.

Yeah I'm not disputing the quality or the sales of the game. I love the game just as much as any other guy but in relative contest strength DKR does not even compare to MK64.

Played for a while. Just finished the Aerie and I'm loving the story and characters so far although the gameplay is super basic hack n' slash and the world is pretty bare bones.

It is clear that the game was made on a budget but I expected it to look more like an early PS3 game rather than an early PS2 one. Anyway graphics are just a bonus for me in games so it doesn't matter much. At least the gameplay hasn't been tedious like Drakengard so far and the story is good enough for me to want to keep playing.

Also I have heard about a hermaphrodite character in the game way back then but it isn't who I think is it?

I have to buy my games from Thailand (but I buy only N.A. releases) since my country has zero video game shops. I have a dealer in Bangkok who usually sells me games so thats where I buy 90% of my games. I don't remember how much I paid for Drakengard 1 and 2 but it was pretty cheap and quite a long time back and so was the original Nier. Paid about 900baht which is like less than 30 dollars for Drakengard 3. Of course I bought Automata at 2100baht which is like 60 dollars full price.

Anyway I usually buy games in bulk most years hence I own a s***load of them. But what the hell it is my no.1 hobby after all.

I played Drakengard a long time back but it didn't engage me enough for me to continue playing it. The story and characters were intriguing but the gameplay was repetitive as **** and turned into a chore very soon.

I heard really good things about the original Nier though. Heard it has a great story and is also one of the most underrated games from the last generation. Plus it falls under a genre I love so why not.

I know there is some connection between the universe of Nier and Drakengard but mostly the games are standalone. Is Drakengard worth a shot or should I just go with Nier and then eventually Automata?

I do own all 5 games so accesibility is not the issue. Time however is with Zelda: BotW still in backburner with other games like Tales of Berseria, Horizon and Andromeda as well.
