There are different ways for things to be perfect. If someone gave a fancy savory meal that took hours to prepare a 10, but then also gave a some cookies a 10, would you act surprised and question how they can also like sweet food?

I would question his criteria for scoring being too liberal because sounds to me like he is someone who is easily pleased by anything.

The definition of a 10/10 meal being "some cookie" is the perfect analogy for a video game story being a 10/10 masterpiece because of an unintentional translation error.

And this is coming from someone who thinks All your base are belong to us is fucking hilarious and voted for CATs in nearly 90% of his contest matches.

To me, it's more the fact that there just isn't really that much that delineates the generations anymore. The last really big fundamental, revolutionary change in how powerful the consoles were was between the PS2/Xbox/GC gen and the PS3/360/Wii gen - those all changed the way games look and felt and created a new paradigm, and you had to get the new consoles right away. Yeah, the PS4/Xbone/Wii U gen further increased the power of the consoles, but now with PS5/Xbox Series whatever/Switch it's like... a lot of people are still on their PS4s and the PS5 only has a handful of key exclusives, nobody really considers the latest Xbox a must-have anymore by any metric, and the Switch is barely even a part of this 'generation', having been released several years earlier and completely doing its own thing. This 'generation' doesn't really feel like anything, to me. So many games are ports and remakes upscaled to a new console, and a lot of games are multiplatform on PC as well which knows not the concept of generations at all. I don't even mean for this to sound lamenting - I think gaming in the 20's is amazing, way better than the 10's and the 00's. I just don't really think of the consoles in generations anymore. To me, the PS4 era was the last true "generation" of consoles and everything has kinda forked off in its own direction now, with no foundational shifts in the fundamental ability of what games are able to do from console to console.

This, I agree with.

Probably the most forgettable Fire Emblem story from the games I played. I also only played this to completion because I wanted to see what Marth was all about. He is just as generic and forgettable as his game.

I know for sure that if I ever replay this game, it would get a 1. The story and dialogue were very cringey back then, I can't even imagine how it has aged now.

Yakuza 0 or Kiwami 1

Either is a fine entry point. 0 was the first Yakuza game I finished after I loathed my experience with Yakuza 1 on the PS2 (probably because of the terrible dub).

After 0, I went on to play Kiwami 1 and the rest of the series all the way to Like a Dragon and absolutely fell in love with the series.

I also highly highly recommend Judgment and Lost Judgment (which I just finished playing last night). Those two games have incredible storytelling. Their story may infact be even better than the best story in the Yakuza games especially the first Judgment game.

Great sequel to Persona 5, with some awesome new characters. Zenkichi Hasegawa is literally my favorite Phantom Thief. However my feeling towards the gameplay is lukewarm at best because I really don't enjoy musou games.

The story is probably the best one in the series. A lot of plot twists that I didn't see coming as a kid and Balio and Sunder were terrifying villains.

Upon replay though, the game did not hold up nearly as good.

Banjo-Kazooie has always been pretty-well adored on this board. MGS and FF9 were tough opponents but it's not like some random-ass game that we never realized was that popular beat them.

(I'd say if Tekken 3 had beaten FF9 then THAT would have been more of a Cinderella run after also taking down RE2)

FFIX has looked like shit in all of its matches. Barely edging out a win against Mario Party of all things and then losing against Tekken 3 for like 80% of the match, made this a not so surprising result.

GameFreak didn't even try with the story this time. But then again when they try a little we get stuff like Legends Arceus and Sun/Moon so not sure which is really worse.

This was their chance to make a big splash with their first mainline Pokemon game on a home console and they failed miserably. This stuff may have been passable on a handheld console but on a current gen home system it exposed the Pokemon games being generations behind the other Nintendo IPs in every technical aspect as well as creative.
