Oh man, I forgot all the Brawl characters in 2008. I was more annoyed that L-Block's win in 2007 led to a flood of joke characters in 2008. I feel like it's really easy to forget about 2008 with 2007 also being a four-way contest and having more memorable moments.

6-2 does well enough! People liked how central this case is for Trucy and the cast. We also get a magic trick explained and used in a testimony! Some issues include Sahdmadhi, in particular that this is the only case that he goes against Apollo. The murder also seemed to trip people up, in particular the issue about Retinz's alibi being "solid tight." We also get to hear about how reddit loves this case and apparently not this case!

Summary:

Phoenix and Maya's reunion in Khura'in proves short-lived after a priest helping her complete her training is found dead in the middle of the ritual. Phoenix takes up Maya's defense once again, as Nahyuta returns and the rumblings of revolution begin to grip the country.

My rating: 9.5/10. A lot is done right here. It's a really interesting murder that makes the most of the Divination Seances. I especially like Zeh'lot, who might be my favorite one-off victim in the series. His seance is brilliant and his role in the murder is really fascinating. The Inmee testimony is an absolute classic. While I'm sad that Maya comes back...and doesn't become an investigation partner, Rayfa is a really great investigation partner. I also really like how much it pushes forward the Khura'in story. We only have 3 cases there with the last case being explosive, so this case has to do a LOT of work of setting the stage for the revolution. And it does it really well with the story of the Inmees.

I have a friend who loves Ace Attorney but absolutely hates the epic finale cases. His favorite case is 2-3 and his least favorite case is 2-4. Basically, he really likes the lighthearted atmosphere, but really doesn't enjoy it when games get dramatic.

People liked Phoenix's characterization and, to an extent, Khura'in's characterization. Gaspen and the Divination Seance was also liked. People had diverging opinions on Andistan'dhin, who was either amusing or got annoying fast. Everyone agreed that the pacing could use some work.

Summary:

The Ace Attorney Assistant Curse finally hits Trucy when a fatal 'accident' during rehearsal claims the life of a fellow magician - and she's held responsible. With Phoenix abroad, Apollo and Athena leap to Trucy's defense, and get their own taste of Khura'in when international prosecutor Nahyuta Sahdmadhi takes the case.

My rating: 5.5/10. I really want to give this case somewhere around 7/10. Trucy finally gets some focus and she does a great job! Mr. Reus, as a concept, is an interesting premise of a villain that doesn't feel retconned into an already completed story. Bonny, Betty, and Retinz are fun characters; though, we could really use a couple more characters. The game's premise of "a crowd that actively hates you" is interestingly translated in Japanifornia with Retinz whipping up a Twitter mob. But...I dunno. The murder is a bit much, Retinz isn't wholly satisfying to take down, and Sahdmadhi just feels like an anchor weighing this case down. It's weird at the beginning of the game that the Khura'inian prosecutor is fought against in Japanafornia and it's weird at the end of the game when you work out Apollo and Sahdmadhi's relationship and...they have a whole case against each other and it's just nothing.

I think its 2 but The Big Shell is kind of a lame environment. 3s forests are much better but I dont like camo or food too much.

Finished Case 5! Seems like I'm a little alone on really liking it. I think 4 is better, but 5 is maybe a few steps behind. I'd probably give 4 a 9.5/10 in my case series and Case 5 a 8 or 8.5, so still really good. I'll start with the cons. While I think the mysteries are good, it's a bit of a shame that the non-Pierce murders are so quick to solve. This is the only case with multiple mages involved and the massive spellbook might have looked intimidating to many, but I thought "oh wow, we're gonna go DEEP into this!" Nope, all resolved pretty much instantly in court. Eris, while better than I was thinking, is still kind of weird in context. You have this big important meeting with all the nobles where Tyrion/Celeste are immediately being questioned and we have...a college student who is the daughter of a crime boss that's gone missing and everyone treats it as whatever. The game basically outright tells you Eris is a major antagonist so you might as well make it canon that Eris is either undetectable or can easily change appearances to fit her needs.

Aster isn't a con to me. I thought he worked well. Yes, his reveal scene is...really abrupt, but I felt like I got all I needed. I have a strong sense of who his character is and the writing felt logical of how it started and where it ended. Lucio just killing Aster at the stand was great characterization for Lucio too. It certainly lacked oomph, though, which is why I liked Case 4 more. Going against Beatrice just feels way better than Aster. I think my biggest issue with Aster is that his plans and Eris's plans just...don't work together. Eris wanted Celeste alive to torment Tyrion, but Aster needed Celeste dead. If there was more pull on that tension between the two, it would have been more interesting.

Now the pros: The main cast is still excellent. As I mentioned, Eris is better than I thought and I was worried this would go into a Danganronpa-esque hope/despair nonsense, especially after Tyrion sprouted wings. But no, it didn't, it kept things really grounded. I'm glad Eris isn't the outright culprit, too. I really enjoyed the mystery's focus on contracts and puppetry. It made it feel epic while feeling uniquely Tyrion and differentiating itself from Case 4.

I always rate things high after I finish, but I feel good putting Tyrion among the top 5 in the series. I think a large part of it is that I think it does certain elements of GAA2 (taking down a thoroughly corrupt government and replacing it with something better) and AAI2 (interconnected mystery that relies heavily on puppetry of other characters' actions) as good as those games, if not outright better. The mysteries are weaker, but to me, the mystery doesn't mean as much as the overall story, the characters, the charm, and the feeling.

A wide range of opinions for one of the more unusual cases in Ace Attorney. People liked the uniqueness of the case and the more Layton aspects of the case. People did not like how long it was and Barnham's lack of relevance.

Summary:

Whilst traveling abroad in the mystical country of Khura'in, Phoenix finds himself caught up in yet another murder when his tour guide is arrested. And with attorneys outlawed here, he'll have to turnabout the entire court system to help his client.

My rating: 4.5/10. This case is all about selling Khura'in and it does a great job of making it feel like a hostile environment for Phoenix. I seem to like Khura'in more than most. The name puns are great, the atmosphere is great, and the music is top notch. We also get the best prosecutor in the game! ...Well, I guess Edgeworth is in 6-6. Winston wouldn't really fit here, but Gaspen feels like such a natural fit for Khura'in. The Divination Seance is probably my favorite gameplay gimmick of all the post-OT gimmicks, even if I have my flaws with it. And I enjoy Andistan'dhin a lot; though, I like his first instrument a lot more.

Thats pretty great! PLvPW is one of two AA games I dont own, so I didnt get the chance to see the wrong answers the only time I went through the game.

I like that Wordsmith came back as a Vigilante. He was my favorite of the random witnesses.

I got hooked and played through Cases 2, 3, and 4 in a few days.

Case 2 - Solid case with a solid mystery. I enjoyed the large cast of suspects and the amount of red herrings to make you think it's Frege. The constructs are a fun programming mystery on top of the magic. Being able to detect magic while investigating is a neat mechanic. I do appreciate how brisk the pacing is and how it doesn't waste your time on simple mysteries like why Frege/Nightgrave's lockers are swapped. That said, the rotating wheel deduction can be really specific at times. I got stuck behind a few even though I knew the answer. Eris makes her first true appearance here and...well, she's an archetype that can be really swing-y. I've played my fair share of meta-aware villains in visual novels, so we'll see if she does anything that really blows me away.

Case 3 - Definitely the weakest mystery so far, but I'll give the case credit - this case made me love the characters. I liked the main cast, but I got invested after Tyrion's backstory and the two ships of Tyrion/Celeste and Aris/Aster. I realized over the last year that while I typically don't like half-baked romance, good, slow burn romance might be my favorite genre. Lots of good lines in this too. I especially like that Tyrion's pretty amazing "I won't let nothing stay in my way, whether it be man, king, or god" is actually a kid-like chunbi line is great. While I generally don't like outright internet-isms in games, the keysmash for Aria's thoughts around Aster is perfect.

Case 4 - Really incredible case. There's basically no slow points and a ton of high points throughout the entire case. I'm glad we got to play as Ruby and play against Ruby - she felt a bit too in the background and she is a really good type of character for this role. Tyrion, Celeste, Aria, and Beatrice are all excellent, but the other characters in the case are good too. The two different thieves and three familial bonds are both great twists that feel right at home with the best of AA. The final confrontation with Beatrice and Marrakuth also feels right at home for great confrontations. Even leading up to it, the confrontation with Eugene is also really amazing. Great ending too with Tyrion rejecting Eris's manipulation and choosing to be with Celeste.

Fair points on Pokmon. A Dark Souls rep should be on there and I like Ornstein/Smaug more for being a mandatory fight.

I still think there should be a mandatory tough fight in otherwise easy series and I think Riku 2 best fits that. Doubly bad because you cant skip cutscenes in the original game so you had to see that cutscene many times.

But a famously hard optional boss (Sans), a fighting game boss (Rugal), and a hard boss from a typically easy series (Whitney) all feel good. Tyson is a classic choice.

We now had 3 games in a row with a case that has been called the best non-finale case and they all scored roughly the same! L-3 gets praise for Jean, Emeer, and the many twists. Many also said it made PLvPW worth it.

Summary:

This is technically 3 separate cases: The Final Witch Trial, The Last Inquisitor, The First Story. This will just be counted as one total case.

Phoenix takes on Espella's defense one last time as the city prepares to judge the Great Witch, while Layton uncovers the truth behind the Storyteller.

My rating: 1/10. This is a contender for my least favorite case in the series. For starters, Espella, Darklaw, and the Storyteller are all characters I do not find compelling at all. Having them take center stage is justbad. This is definitely more of a Layton ending than an Ace Attorney ending. While I dont mind Layton endings, the two games styles really clash here. Its also just really long.

The Fire Witch was liked for the introduction of the prosecutor, Barnham. There were mixed opinions on the witnesses themselves; though, "Some Guy" was quite liked. Of the 12 votes, 6 of them were 6/10.

Summary:

Maya keeps up her winning streak of at least one murder charge per game, and Phoenix takes on the impossible task of solving a case where the victim has turned to gold.

My rating: 9.5/10. I may have rated it a bit high just because I didn't expect such a high quality case from this game, but man, there's a ton going on. Layton being the victim causes Luke to testify against Maya, Jean stands out as a tragic character even considering the entire scope of the AA series, and then Emeer of all people comes back to bring some levity to the case. The ending is a massive gut punch, even if I didn't think they went through with killing Maya. But it's treated seriously in-universe and you don't find Maya for some time, making everyone wrestle with the ending.

Crunches are bad in the sense that I hate anything that demands perfection to fully complete. To its credit, it's gotten better as I complete more mini-games. You're always doing something in crunches, while several mini-games have a lot of breaktime. Crunches doesn't really feel like it takes that long in retrospect.

G-bike is whatever. I would have ranked it way lower. I didn't really like the motorcycle parts of Remake either!

Junon Parade is good. I'm not sure if you could practice the different formations, but I would have liked that. 7th Infantry is really good, as I said before. I had no idea people loved the Junon chapter. I thought it was fine, but it might be the worst region in the game for me?

I didn't like Roche in Remake, but I felt like Rebirth Roche took the good/meme parts of Roche and racketed them way up. I liked that he became a black cloak at the end, too. Really effective use of him.

Rude's easily my favorite Turk, but I don't really like the Turks that much! While I docked Tseng points for being too unflappable, Rude's a much better example of giving him characterization underneath his cool exterior.

Cloud's good for what he is. Flashback Cloud is really great and you can feel how off Cloud is immediately. The hallucinations are brought up a lot...possibly too much, but it makes the standout moments in Gongaga and Temple of the Ancients really shine. I'm a bit mixed on how the party treats Cloud. It's ultimately "right" that they don't blame Cloud for his mental breakdowns, but at the same time...he really fucks over the party. The Skywheel dates are all pretty muted moments for Cloud too except Yuffie and maybe Tifa.

Just finished Case 1. Not reading anything in the topic until I finish the game and just posting thoughts.

It's promising! I like that the tutorial already puts the idea that you can point out a mistake through evidence, through emotions, or through surface-level thoughts, even if you don't actually do that beyond the tutorial. The characters are good and I actually like the art/animations for what it is. The story is good, too. While there are naturally corrupt societies and institutions, Ace Attorney doesn't really dwell on it as this game already shows it does. There's divisions between allies and very few seem satisfied with the status quo, but for different reasons.

I definitely appreciate the tabletop-isms of each spell having a lot of small differences and the way that it's measured out on a grid. I'm not sure if this game started as an Ace Attorney game that grew more into tabletop or started as a tabletop that grew more into Ace Attorney. In any case, I'm all for it, as someone who really enjoys both of these topics.

Psychological profiles and empowered eye are both nice. I definitely had issues with empowered eye, but I do really like that there's a ton of optional dialogue here like Pierce musing that he has an affinity for water magic.

Not too many thoughts regarding this case, largely due to the game its in...and that it's forgettable even in the game its in. People liked that it's unique in the series for not having any pretense of murder and people generally liked Olivia. We also went through 20 cases without Phoenix/Maya so seeing them back together is great!

Summary:

With Espella accused of witchcraft and famed inquisitor Zacharias Barnham prosecuting her case, the only thing standing between her and the stake is Ace Baker Phoenix Wright and a certain gentleman professor.

My rating: 6.5/10. Pretty solid case. I don't really mind the caricature witnesses and, honestly, this is a pretty good selection. In some sense, it's actually pretty difficult to figure out who the murderer is because none of them really give killer vibes. Barnham pulls off the "friendly prosecutor" style way better than Klavier does and I always felt he's a really underrated prosecutor. I think he's my 4th favorite "regular prosecutor" after Edgeworth, Blackquill, and Godot. Emeer gives this case a solid point. He adds a lot of life midway through the case and makes it really memorable.
