A wide range of opinions for one of the more unusual cases in Ace Attorney. People liked the uniqueness of the case and the more Layton aspects of the case. People did not like how long it was and Barnham's lack of relevance.

Summary:

Whilst traveling abroad in the mystical country of Khura'in, Phoenix finds himself caught up in yet another murder when his tour guide is arrested. And with attorneys outlawed here, he'll have to turnabout the entire court system to help his client.

My rating: 4.5/10. This case is all about selling Khura'in and it does a great job of making it feel like a hostile environment for Phoenix. I seem to like Khura'in more than most. The name puns are great, the atmosphere is great, and the music is top notch. We also get the best prosecutor in the game! ...Well, I guess Edgeworth is in 6-6. Winston wouldn't really fit here, but Gaspen feels like such a natural fit for Khura'in. The Divination Seance is probably my favorite gameplay gimmick of all the post-OT gimmicks, even if I have my flaws with it. And I enjoy Andistan'dhin a lot; though, I like his first instrument a lot more.

The opening is strong. Phoenix busting into the courtroom to save Ahlbi, only to find that this court is unlike anything he's ever seen, Gaspen as the Chief Prosecutor, and Ahlbi rejecting his help are all great.

But after that...man, this case drags. It has no business being three hours long with how basic it is. Andistan'dhin and his gimmick wears thin fast, especially because it makes everything just take longer than it should. I did not enjoy this one when I replayed it in the Apollo Justice Trilogy a couple months ago.

The pacing in this one is really brutal. Maybe I'm being too harsh, because this case is really doing its best to establish Khura'in, but it's a LOT of 'oh no, the DC act!' and 'death! death! death!' and it takes its sweet ass time getting to the point. I don't really like Andistan'dhin that much - I get that despite the oppressive atmosphere they're not trying to be super serious, but even then, he's just a little TOO silly for my tastes - the metal singing really fell flat for me. I find it a little strange how they're trying to make Khura'in seem like a hostile, foreign place, but the first two villains we run into here are both foreigners that Khura'in is just super chill with.- I guess the point isn't that Khura'in is racist, it's ONLY that they hate defense attorneys, but something about it still strikes me as really odd.

That all said, this case does have its one ace up its sleeve, and that's the Divination Seance. Every Divination Seance is extremely fun and cool and the fact that this case has one keeps it from being a bottom tier case.

Ahlbi (and Shadoh) is adorable but otherwise it's a pretty forgettable case.

Also, I forgot about Pat Rohl but that means we have 4 patrol-based names alongside Patricia and Roly Beates, and Patricia Roland (although that one's a fan name).

If you consider Ray in AAI2 as a sidekick, he doesn't either. And if you're counting Rayfa, you should count him.

And Apollo is a sidekick a couple times, too, technically.

Really rough start to what ends up being a great game. I hate the puns in this one cause they feel weirdly offensive even though I know they're not?

Gumshoe gets accused in E1-4.

Oh, yeah, I forgot that Gumshoe does become the accused in E1-4 for a little bit.

Franziska gets accused in E1-5, even if it's just a ruse

Also Pearl never gets accused. She's nearly an accomplice to murder though!

Franziska is briefly the investigation partner in the beginning of E1-5 though.

They drove the point home too hard at times, but I liked all of the characters so we chillin

I loved Pees'lub's transformation and synchronized speech bloops

I remember finding the start of this one really awkward. Like, if DD was "this is nice but doesn't have the spark of the original trilogy", this was like "this feels entirely alien". But I think as it went on, I did get into the case a bit, and that's probably because of the divination sceances.

I actually found this one to be pretty enjoyable. It's my #2 in the game, which I found to be poorly paced and drawn out in general, not to mention tainted by the stench of Nahyuta.

E2-1is really long but it goes places. This on the other hand has the depth of a classic intro with E2-1length. It's not terrible otherwise but man it needed to stop so much sooner.

This one was a lot of fun with an entertaining villain.

7/10. Gaspen being actually evil was cool. Definitely the hardest first case and a showcase of how tough seances are right off the bat.

An okay case that runs longer than it should, or at least feels like it does. It really doesn't look like it ought to last as long as it does, especially because I don't remember that much time spent on Khura'in exposition, and the fact that the murder is actually pretty simple. It doesn't help that Pees'lub Andistan'dhin (great name btw I love these dumn names so much) spends so much time with slow dialogue as he sings out his testimonies. Funny joke, especially when the other characters (including Phoenix!) join in, but it is a funny joke that becomes unfunny with how it slows down momentum.

Worldbuilding is pretty good. Future ranking spoilers but I'm a huge fan of this setting. It was smart to give us an outside perspective of the nation, though I am mildly concerned that Phoenix didn't know about the vastly different court system when he booked a flight.

Gaspen honestly a good prosecutor, the one sided Payne/Phoenix rivalry will never not be great. Ahlbi is precious!

Not bad on a first playthrough, I'd say, but like half of the tutorial cases, I wouldn't be itching for a replay.

Why do I always get the faaaaar out ones?

I think a big difference for 6-1 for me is that Andistan'dhin fell flat for me. I just didn't find him funny at all and him singing and everyone joining in made me cringe. This case was lucky to get a 3 from me.
