6-2 does well enough! People liked how central this case is for Trucy and the cast. We also get a magic trick explained and used in a testimony! Some issues include Sahdmadhi, in particular that this is the only case that he goes against Apollo. The murder also seemed to trip people up, in particular the issue about Retinz's alibi being "solid tight." We also get to hear about how reddit loves this case and apparently not this case!

Summary:

Phoenix and Maya's reunion in Khura'in proves short-lived after a priest helping her complete her training is found dead in the middle of the ritual. Phoenix takes up Maya's defense once again, as Nahyuta returns and the rumblings of revolution begin to grip the country.

Main Characters: Phoenix Wright, Maya Fey, Rayfa Padma Khura'in, Ema Skye, Nahyuta Sahdmadhi, Ga'ran Sigatar Khura'in, Apollo Justice, Dhurke Sahdmadhi, The Khura'inian Judge
Other Characters: Ahlbi Ur'gaid, Tahrust Inmee, Beh'leeb Inmee, Puhray Zeh'lot, Lady Keera, A'nohn Ihmus (TBD), Datz Are'bal

My rating: 9.5/10. A lot is done right here. It's a really interesting murder that makes the most of the Divination Seances. I especially like Zeh'lot, who might be my favorite one-off victim in the series. His seance is brilliant and his role in the murder is really fascinating. The Inmee testimony is an absolute classic. While I'm sad that Maya comes back...and doesn't become an investigation partner, Rayfa is a really great investigation partner. I also really like how much it pushes forward the Khura'in story. We only have 3 cases there with the last case being explosive, so this case has to do a LOT of work of setting the stage for the revolution. And it does it really well with the story of the Inmees.

Lots of good stuff, even I don't remember it too well. The spirit channeling of the victim was pretty cool, IIRC.

If Edgeworth was in Phoenix's place he would have figured out it was a suicide on day 1!

It's a good case.

Edit to say more: really slow start and actually maybe too sad? I actually probably like 6-2 more and I wouldn't be surprised if I'm the only one

It was a good call to have Phoenix actually face the potential consequences of the DC Act, even if for practical purposes, it didn't affect him much. It was also a brilliant decision to have Rayfa be the investigation partner so you can learn to sympathize with her and she can learn to sympathize with Phoenix.

The first trial day is a mixed bag. It's kinda wild to me that Datz lies through his teeth the entire day, you expose that he was lying through his teeth the entire day, and then Phoenix loses the case anyway. I guess it drives home how unfair the system is.

Trial Day 2 is outstanding though. Having Maya channel Tahrust made for a really unique testimony, and choosing to kill himself to try to protect his wife is a strong motive.

This is the best third case of the series, and I cannot express enough how excited I was for the rest of the game after this one.

It's very, very good. Legit twists, strong cast, and just the aspect of it showing that the people are aware of the Dance of Devotion and know that they can manipulate it to only show what they want it to show is super cool, and fun foreshadowing, it turns out!

This case does a lot of great stuff. Turned a character I hated into one I love (Datz), cool murder, very classic AA feel. Unfortunately, I noticed in the first day how much focus they gave on the difference between the Steel Samurai theme and the Plumed Punisher theme, and knew that was going to be a major plot point. I was frantically poking at the divination the last trial day to try to hear the song to reveal it was the wrong one, and the hours of time passing with the predicted twist hanging over the case absolutely ruined the day for me

I have exactly one problem with this case, and I think I've mentioned it before, but I have written fanfic to demonstrate.

May 11, 2:03 PM
Detention Center

Phoenix: (Well... looks like this is it.)
Phoenix: (Maya's been found guilty, and now I'm subject to penalty under the DC Act.)
Phoenix: (I've been locked up in here for hours. Nobody's coming to my aid.)
Phoenix: (I'm sorry, Maya. I couldn't protect -)

Rayfa appears.

Phoenix: (...It's her. What does she want?)
Rayfa: You're free to go.
Phoenix: ...! Wait, really?
Rayfa: Yes. Under the condition that I am to accompany you everywhere you go, of course.
Rayfa: This is a direct order from my father. He has granted you a stay of execution.
Rayfa: Rejoice! Yours is the first pardon a lawyer has ever received under the DC Act! You should be honored!
Phoenix: Justice Minister Inga ordered this? But why?
Rayfa: (smiling) Ooooh, it would have been awful, Barbed Head! They were going to lock you in a cage and have Warbaa'ds pluck out your eyes!
Rayfa: A fitting punishment for someone who uses their bewitching words to make people see illusions and deceit, if you ask me.
Rayfa: However, I spoke to my father and convinced him to show you but a small fraction of the Holy Mother's infinite mercy.
Rayfa: I have saved you from a terrible fate. Am I not a kind and benevolent princess, who offers second chances to even the most pathetic of lowlifes?
Phoenix: I have to admit, that's a surprisingly nice thing for you to do for someone you hate so much, Your Benevolence.
Rayfa: Hmph! Don't act as if it was merely for your sake. You have called my Divination Seances into question twice, now.
Rayfa: I cannot allow you to face your fate until I have proven to you, once and for all, that my insights are superior to your lawyerly tricks!
Rayfa: And then, you and that vile criminal Maya Fey will get what's coming to you. And there will be no third chances, Barbed Head!
Rayfa: So, let us make haste for the crime scene!
Phoenix: ...Ah, I see how it is. You had fun yesterday, didn't you?
Rayfa: (surprised) What?
Phoenix: That's why you begged your father to let me out, isn't it? So you could tag along with me on my investigation?
Rayfa: (getting angry) You... you... that is a PREPOSTEROUS notion! As if I don't have better things to do than lead you around like some mangy dog!
Rayfa: You'd best watch your tongue, Barbed Head, or I'll personally see to it that the Warbaa'ds pluck that out, too!
Phoenix: (In other words, I hit the nail on the barbed head. Guess I shouldn't antagonize her any further, though.)
Phoenix: My apologies, Your Benevolence. Let's go.
Phoenix: (Still... what could the Justice Minister be thinking? Did he really listen to his daughter?)
Phoenix: (I hope this isn't some kind of trap... but I guess I don't have any other choice but to take this chance to investigate!)

This scene, or something like it, really should have happened after the end of the first trial day. It would establish that Rayfa has a soft spot for Phoenix, reward Phoenix for cultivating his relationship with her, and give him a genuinely plausible out in an otherwise hopeless situation - and at the same time, it would be foreshadowing to the fact that Inga himself has a soft spot for his daughter.

Instead, THIS SCENE NEVER HAPPENS. Phoenix is just standing around at the temple with absolutely no explanation of why they set him free! It totally takes me out of the urgency of the guilty verdict on the first day that they didn't even arrest Phoenix or anything. Drives me completely nuts. They had this little character moment perfectly set up between Rayfa and Phoenix and just skipped it! I don't understand!

Otherwise this case is basically perfect, it's a top 5 case in the entire franchise, the murders are brilliant, the twist is brilliant, the payoff to Maya's return to the series is awesome, it's one of the most exciting cases and probably the best middle case ever, BUT THIS ONE THING REALLY BOTHERS ME

Also, I kind of wish Phoenix lost the first case on something more substantial, it feels like he just sort of ran out of time and Nahyuta was just like 'no you'. Like if Datz's testimony ended up revealing something even more damning and Nahyuta turned it on him or something. Kind of a minor complaint though. I'm really finding little things to nitpick here because this case is so close to perfection.

Also, great fanfic, Paratroopa1. I could believe something like that could be in here.

6-2: 5.5/10
6-3: 8.5/10

Seems I'm lower on this game than most people, just like with DD. Strange, considering I enjoy both games! I have nothing much to say about the first two cases; they're both fine, but pretty average as a case 1 and 2 within the series. This one is different! I can't remember all of the details but this is a great case with a unusually "epic" feel and emotional climax. Probably the best case 3 in the main series, alongside 3-3.

9.5/10. Probably one of the worst 1st days in the series but it's counteracted by one of the best 2nd days. I've definitely seen my fair share of people who simply dislike Tahrust but he definitely carries day 2 hard. Rayfa is pretty fun too.

I love the idea of a trial being the backdrop of a revolution and part of a bigger picture. While every case has stakes, most of time they're personal, and almost never have they felt so weighty in the sense of greater worldbuilding. I think the AAI games and DD do this sort of thing, but this was the one game that really had me going "damn this might end in an actual war." And honestly, I love it. Khu'rain seems to be divisive as a setting but sign me up.

The only big disappointment I have is that Nahyuta is so static of a character when it comes to his writing. It sucks because his design is good, his animations are good, his theme is good, hell, I even liked him at the end of the game to an extent though I would not say that it was earned either. But until the very end, they just can't find a way to make him interesting outside of a few throwaway lines that suggest a fondness towards Ema and his penchant for research. He's worse in this trial because what little endearing traits he showed in 6-2 are quashed, and there isn't even anything in the realm of pathos to replace it. Which is wild because already you can tell that Rayfa is starting to thaw! Hell, SHE'S one of the best parts of this case.
