I don't get how you can say this.

Ok sure his "ejects you unless 2 people are dead" thing is complete bullshit

But put that aside and his weakness to being paralyzed makes him easy. Just spam Hades or Dazzlers and wail away. With a little pre-planning you take him down without grinding and with low level characters with no KOTR or Limits.

With Emerald you gotta come in with low/strategic materia and actually be wary of his attacks. You pretty much have to either Grind or use very bullshit cheap KOTR tactics to win.

I remember them being easy when I was a kid but replaying now they just have crazy health and bullshit attacks.

Had to go look up strategies which I never did as a kid and they all involve Maxing out Materia or bullshiting KOTR spams. Either way a ton of grinding.

I think I was just more accepting of grinding back in the day.

First Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children go "Tseng, Hojo and Rufus were actually fine somehow and Nanaki isn't the last of his kind"

And now the remake is going "Also Zack and Aerith won't die"

I'm not saying I really want people to die or anything but it just seems like removing consequences of everyone's actions to just handwave and go "Actually no, everyone was fine."

This, Ron Moore talks about this a ton in his commentaries for BSG (he was also a writer on TNG and DS9). He specifically mentions he loved writing for Star Trek but that the technology was so much of a hindrance during the writing because they almost always had to come up with a reason for something to not work as designed because otherwise they wouldn't have story.
In TOS they just ignored it lol

There's a whole episode about people being stuck on a planets surface and the transporters are down, but no one person suggests taking a shuttle

I mean you can easily make up an excuse for why they couldn't but it's funny that they dont because it just looks like no one thought of it

The other things are just writing, but this is wrong. The main ship is usually one of the most powerful in the galaxy and can win fights 1v2 or more. You often don't see this because the mere presence of, say, Enterprise 1701D is enough to de-escalate many situations. They usually lose to guerilla tactics, cloaking technology, and/or technology they haven't seen before. The only threats that routinely beat a main ship in a straight fight, off the top of my head, are the Borg and species 8472.
I meant literal firefights between security and aliens

Transporters are an even more egregious example than security, though.

It's hard to generate tension when the person in danger can just be magically whisked away.
So there's always some excuse for why the transporter won't or can't work...
Yeah i heard the Enterprise writers originally weren't going to have transporters on the show but then changed their mind because they realized just how useful a writing tool it was.

It doesnt really get covered too much but Starfleet people are absurdly intelligent just at a baselevel, and those that get on the coveted Enterprise likely to be more so. Everyone on that ship in an official capacity is not only likely trained to work with the ships systems in some way, but also likely to be intimately familiar with them depending on their post.
This goes both ways though.

If everyone is so capable, then how come their security protocols and staff are so inept?

Its also often why the timeframe between each episode is at least several weeks if not months. Episode worthy tales arent an everyday occurence in their universe.
Yes. I too like to believe that inbetween episodes weeks or months of absolutely nothing interesting happening occurs.

Also another thing:

Any crew member that turns evil or has their own agenda can override the security controls and take over/escape the ship.

I mean I get it if the Captain and maybe the 1st officer can do that. But how come like random engineering crew members can override the security measures of the entire ship?

I don't remember if it ever happened in the show but I bet Troi could have bypassed all Enterprise security if she wanted to.

Been watching it recently and every single episode it's like "Oh no, the prionser excaped! And they blocked out our security protocals!"

"OH no they're doing a transport and their jamming signal stopped our defenses."

"Oh no they stole that technology from us because apparently no one was looking."

"Oh no! Theyre heading for the shuttle bay and we can't seal the doors because they are not responding!"

They make Worf, Odo, Tuvoc, Reed etc look like fools. Apparently the original enterprise had no security chief.

Plus in firefights even on their own ship with their own weapons and a 2 - 1 advantage they seem to lose to whatever alien of the week they are fighting

Closest I can think of is there is a DS9 episode where they successfully prevent Dax from being kidnapped but that's hardly high praise because it came after like 5 minutes of back and forth where all their security measures completely failed.

Then in another episode some crazy Cardassian blew up a chunk of the station with a microscopic hunter probe and confessed that he could have easily destroyed the entire thing if he wanted too...

Isn't Starfleet like the most technologically advanced of all the empire states? Isn't Tuvoc like 100+ years old?

Why are they all so crap at security? I bet they run Norton Anti-Virus or something
