KanzarisKelshen 10/04/20 2:18:35 PM #465 | Not_an_Owl posted... It is completely miserable to play as melee or tank. Many mechanics force you to disconnect from the boss at awkward times, and unlike most other fights that are designed to force melees off the boss there aren't many great ways to work around it or design strats to regain the uptime. As tank specifically the tankbuster is very likely to just kill you if your co-tank isn't consistent on swaps or if you accidentally get hit on another mechanic. The fight in general is very chaotic and if your group isn't disciplined it's very easy to get hit by something you're not supposed to and die as a result. Hard disagree on this Speaking as a tank, e6s is by far my favorite fight of the tier precisely because there are ways to force uptime on it. Nothing feels as good as just brute-forcing the Storms of Fury with cds, using bolide to gain uptime, and just generally no-selling everything Rakta tries to do. It's so optimizable it's very fun to do! E8S is the shitshow. I detest everything about optimizing it except the swag strat with dashes on Akh Rhai after Icelit Dragonsong. --- Shine on, you crazy diamond. |

Don't worry about that. All I'll say is please have patience with the game starting out. It really doesn't put its best foot forward, but it all starts finally paying off come Heavensward. Try to take it easy as a sort of 'side-project' kinda game until you start getting close to that point to avoid burnout. What did get implemented was Denuvo Anticheat, which is a very standard anticheat program. It had a botched implementation because of some fuckery with bad driver interactions, but that's not really the same as good ol 'game shits itself in terms of optimization because this exists' Denuvo DRM, doubly so considering Id software is a company that sells videogame engines and their flagship game crapping out in terms of performance is financial suicide. --- Shine on, you crazy diamond. |

KanzarisKelshen 05/18/20 1:49:30 PM #394 | I'm sad you lost friends like that Ulti! My best online friend persuaded me to try XIV and it was honestly one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. The core difference, and I think why that game deserves a try, is that the people who are making it really, really care. It's tempting to compare it to World of Warcraft, since it's often touted as the only game that has a shot at being an actual WoW killer, but it's really not the same thing at all. I think one of the main ways to explain the difference is that the Creative Director and Producer of XIV has stated, repeatedly, that he sees the game as one people can play as much as they want, then drop for as long as they want, and come back to it and see no penalties, because games are about fun and not about an endless grind. WoW is made to keep you playing at all times, no matter what. XIV is different in that regard. It restored my faith that Final Fantasy could ever be good again in a way no announcements for 7 Remake could, and the fact the aforementioned director and producer is now tapped to headline FF16 fills me with excitement. If anyone can make another unambiguously great mainline FF, it's him. I really do recommend trying it when the main quest update launches in a couple months, as it will trim down the main barrier to entry, which is the kinda shoddy base game plot. Everything afterward is just amazing, and is everything you love about FFs. Promise. I never played another MMO for more than a couple days, but XIV earned a year's worth of subscriptions from me for all the amazing work it's done. Surprised you didn't mention FF13 in that writeup and whether or not it had more reason to be in there instead given that game got two sequels. Speaking of which, I personally would've preferred FF13 in the bracket over a game that launched so badly the developers apologized for it and rereleased a new version a year or two later which began with the old world being destroyed or something along those lines. And I didn't exactly love FF13, myself. No one cares about FF13. XIV has managed to create a villain that toppled Sephiroth for the title of most beloved antagonist amongst the fanbase. Absolutely no contest for which game deserved to be here. --- Shine on, you crazy diamond. |

In my mind it's just like, if there's a 2 game per series cap, does FFXIII have a solid argument to have been included over XIV and XV? I don't really feel it. It's not necessarily that I think it'd have performed worse than the snubs I did include, but that series quota was filled satisfactorily. It's XV being even worse. NOBODY gives a shit about XV. This is a correct take (with the caveat TiT is still a masterpiece) Basically you have about three levels of Beat em up quality Old TMNT/Final Fight/SoR1 (terrible depth, mash button to win) Final Fight 3, Knights of the Round, Turtles in Time, etc. (some depth, still kinda superficial though) SoR2/3/4/Remake, Guardian Heroes, etc. (actual complex mechanics and/or sophisticated enemy manipulation, has a meaningful gap between skill floor and ceiling) All the SoRs are extremely good and very different from each other so they come strongly recommended if you want to see what a good but more classic BMU is like! KanzarisKelshen 05/04/20 12:14:02 PM #38 | Fell Seal is the correct answer It's FFT, except without garbage class balance, which basically makes it utterly perfect. The plot is not as good and it's obviously not as pretty, but those are the only two knocks against it. In every way a game's systems can be good, it excels. I've shilled it to five different people with widely varying tastes (from FFT diehards to people who never touched an SRPG before) and they all loved it. It is, legitimately, the future of the genre and any SRPG that doesn't take cues from it going forward is an actively bad game. There's a reason it's excluded from roulettes (and not just because it's too difficult for most players to be able to beat); it's unlike any content that's come since. Certain abilities and mechanics it was balanced around don't exist anymore, although the Echo mitigates some of that. I'm glad I went through it at min ilvl the first time through, I don't think it would have had the same impact if I were just watching cutscenes and then immediately dps'ing them down. Thirding (because I was part of this group). Min ilevel coils was an absolutely wonderful rush. Bad End Syndrome is a great song, and I like it quite a bit -- but it's up against the only song in this bracket I'd bother to do a lyrical analysis for, and in fact, did. Shadowbringers isn't just buttrock or anime guitar or whatever its detractors want to call it. It's abso-fuckin'-lutely amazing lyrical storytelling, weaving together six whole years of narrative into a package that elevates the scene it's in to something transcendent.
