I finished Apothecary Diaries, and holy crap, Maomao is my favorite character in an anime in like forever. It's impressive just how much one character can mean to a show's success when they are written as nuanced as she is. Downtrodden, street smart, yet childish, angsty when necessary, yet always shows multiple sides, and always able to change the tide of a scene without it coming off as against type.

The political intrigue and mystery bits are done well enough, kinda like a less serious Raven of the Inner Palace. Really, the reason I prefer this over Raven is how Maomao is portrayed. Similar to Frieren, where the comedy doesn't seem out of place and the serious moments don't seem unnatural. Just a perfect balance: just like Maomao. I can't wait for Season 2.

Finished Frieren just now. From start to finish, just like Apothecary, this show just hit every stride and stayed great all the way through. Frieren is an intriguing character, but I think what works best is how it mixes in deadpan humor just enough to match the serious tone. It's amazing how it kept Himmel's party and their exploits in the forefront to explain current party situations. There's so much to love, and I want more someday.

I was actually thinking they were gonna kill Tifa off instead, given the higher amount of Cloud/Tifa scenes in the game.

It would have probably still have been bad, but a simple bait and switch "get stabbed and die" would have been more preferable to the multiverse nonsense.

They spent way too long trying to justify the weird multiversal shit. For a game that was doing a very good job building up character dynamics and relationships. However, they keep jumping back and forth between things, and made the final scenes a "go for broke all out crazy fever dream.". Cool visual spectacle and Cloud's even more an unreliable narrator...but fucking hell. FF just can't keep things simple, can they?

*Takes Mitsuru, Aigis, and Yukari for a Gatekeeper fight*

Aigis: Is this what they call a harem? It seems like every man fantasizes about this scenario.

Mitsuru: Ulterior motives aside, the party is well-balanced.

Yukari: You didn't just do this for the lolz, did you?

No. I usually pick Aigis and Mitsuru anyway, and Yukari is the best healer. I do appreciate this kind of dialogue though.

I think for me, Roche is trying to fit the same niche that the Turks already occupy, but with a deliberately creepy love boner for Cloud being a legendary level swordsman. He has a tendency like the Turks do of seeing the greater good and letting the party pass after they kick the shit out of him, but again, he's just filling boss quota without being more than a bike loving weirdo.

At least with most of Gilgamesh's appearances, he kinda waffles back and forth between the giggling quipmaster in FF5 and a complete badass you don't fuck with, without it feeling wrong either way.

I'm going to be the weirdo who says it: Roche got on my nerves the more I saw him. Chadley sucks sure, but at least he hasn't had multiple boss fights over multiple games where they are trying and failing to make a recurring side boss.

I get it game. I don't need it more than once.

If you're not wasting any time on sidequesting, you can get out of places in 90 minutes to 2 hours. Maybe places like Costa Del Sol take way longer due to the mechanics at play, but I never felt that inconvenienced.

Then again, after Infinite Wealth, I swore off doing side bullshit for a while. Dondoko Island was cool, but Sujimon's Discreet Four quests just ate away at me. Well, that and deciding to do nearly all the substories as soon as things got unlocked. Fucking lemonade stand...

Well, I can enjoy everything all the same. I haven't seen if they stick the landing of Rebirth yet (only up to 2nd Gold Saucer), but the pace of this game is really damn good. If you don't do sidequesty bullshit, you get through areas in about 1-2 hours. The game is filled to the brim with cool character moments, and I think it actually plays around with Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith's stories in a way that makes more sense than they did in OG. That's mostly due to Cloud's mental state being way better produced and executed in this graphical style and presentation. The changes in the story also seem less complex somehow...again...so far. It's different enough to feel original, without making the original feel like it is being completely overwritten; that's pretty fucking funny, given that is exactly the type of story they are doing, in a cheeky way. OG still exists on its own, but this isn't replacing anything.

There is every chance this cocks up, but I've loved the story and pacing of Rebirth. It's a different version of FF7, and I've loved every minute of it since leaving Midgar. The World Tour was my favorite part of OG anyway. I'm glad it hasn't disappointed.

I will say the game does really well at getting characters down. Elena's a fascinating try hard wannabe hard ass. Yuffie just bounces all over the place. Red has his place, getting pissy at all the backwards comments about being a pet.

It's just more of what Remake got right.

Cool. What did they do?

I looked up the cast again, and saw one of my favorites (J. Michael Tatum) was Cid. I knew he was doing more video games than anime recently, but it's still kinda crazy him going from Black Butler and Spice and Wolf to a pretty major character in the biggest JRPG in god knows how long. Met him once at a con too. Super cool guy.

Youtube uploads are trickling in now. After Infinite Wealth killed my hands (95 hours in a month is...a bit much at my age), watching this game is gonna feel like a dream. I'm only at the Chocobo Ranch, but cool stuff is already peppered in. Story differences, new character scenes, the vistas are just cool and big. I'm amped for this.

Better yet, other than the Flashback, Kalm took only about a half hour or so. No super sized Midgar bullshit this time. Only Junon should get that treatment. Maybe they learned they have too much fucking shit to redo.

It has the characters, music, visuals, and other "FF7" stuff down pat, even if the story goes off in some weird new directions. The combat is kinda wonky. Bosses specifically have this, "Better figure out our thing, or spend half an hour fighting this guy." There's also this issue of difficulty spikes. Either the enemies are complete pushovers, or they do a shit ton of damage.
