When the in game marching band hit I fell for him all over again.

I think for me, Roche is trying to fit the same niche that the Turks already occupy, but with a deliberately creepy love boner for Cloud being a legendary level swordsman. He has a tendency like the Turks do of seeing the greater good and letting the party pass after they kick the shit out of him, but again, he's just filling boss quota without being more than a bike loving weirdo.

At least with most of Gilgamesh's appearances, he kinda waffles back and forth between the giggling quipmaster in FF5 and a complete badass you don't fuck with, without it feeling wrong either way.

I've gotten in the habit of muting the TV.

There is in fact a setting to turn off MAI on retries after completing once.

OK so in a sidequest, Tifa just specifically referenced the Steel Sky line Aerith gave at the end of Remake before they patched it out.

So I dunno what the hell they did that for anymore lol.

In a recent patch (less than 2 weeks ago I think), Aerith's final line in Remake was changed from "I miss it. The steel sky..." to "This sky, I don't like it".

It was assumed this was to match some change in Rebirth, since in the same patch they gave Cowgirl Tifa an undershirt during the brief flashback in Remake to match Rebirth...but the game directly references Aerith saying the Steel Sky line during the Condor sidequest, even though she doesn't say it anymore.

Unrelated, does anyone else still look back and laugh about when they said it was too too hard to make towns, back when they were making the leap to HD? I remember that being such a huge deal around the time XIII, I think, came out. Walking around Kalm, it's so dense and bustling with life. It's super well realized.

You also gotta remember that at that time, and for quite a while moving forward, Square was still trying to use their own incompetent nightmare engines.

The HD era hit all Japanese devs like a freight train. And the self-inflicted engine woes didn't help either, yes.

What's the deal with the lighting in this game? Like it can't ever decide if it should be bright or dark and it almost flickers back and forth at times? I haven't come across any kind of settings or anything for it though.

yeah Ive noticed the lighting getting weird in places where it transitions between a dark place and a bright place

It was a real issue during the mine cart section where you shoot crates. A lot of quickly going in and out of cave sections, and the lighting made it tough to actually see a lot of the stuff I was meant to shoot.

Even with the right tools it's insanely, ridiculously hard. With the wrong tools it's impossible.

Also it sounds like they added Chadley and a bunch of BS specifically to punish open world completionists who can't leave a stone unturned

I'm still cleaning up shop in Junon, so very early in the game, but I've Platinum'd the original and the Interlude DLC, and my opinion on the characters is that I like or love pretty much everyone

EXCEPT YUFFIE. I remember liking her in the original FFVII, but they missed the mark with her shitty attitude in this one. She's just a jerk. There's no way she had this same personality in 97, right?

Just finished Junon region story stuff and wow this game really got great quickly there

Also every single interaction between Aeris and Tifa is amazing and I love both of them so much. Put them on screen together and its magic

Yuffie is much worse with a voice imo.

I didn't care for Roche in Remake but all his stuff in Junon was gold.

Set Mai and Chadley's voices to come from the PS5 controller, then mute the controller. Problem solved.

I remember that not bothering me because it didn't actually make the combat in the area tougher or more annoying. But it's been 15 years since I played the og, so my memory could just be whack.

So far I have disliked every second Yuffie was on screen, but she's not actually in the party yet. We'll see!

That first scene of her is so bad.

Yuffies grown on me over the time Ive had her, but also I think I have a remarkable ability to grow attached to any party member in a game after a while. I thought Hope was alright.

(exception being Vaan and Penelo who are forever jabronis sucking screentime away from the cool guys)

but hey, Yuffies ninja partner just got killed by Shinra, and shes all by herself in a foreign land controlled by his murderers. And shes basically a kid. Cut her some slack.

Unless you had so much materia by the time you went to Wutai that you had more than she could steal (or you went there when you were higher than the level the game expected you to be), tackling that area without materia was pretty tough.

I almost could have forgiven Yuffie if she didn't put my materia back in the wrong order. At that point, she rode the bench the rest of the way.

Maybe having bratty younger sisters has poisoned the archetype.

Guess it didn't annoy me particularly much. I like how ultimately she got into it and bonded with the gang after her earlier fits. MAI voice spam over special encounters constantly during extra stuff was more annoying for me, though that's just how it was implemented.
