I like audiobooks if I'm working or something that lets me wear headphones. So it's like I'm getting paid to listen to audiobooks all day and that's fun.

But reading is better and the reason is that the speaker, without intention, alters the tone of the book in ways that were not intended and it takes away some of the fun. The benefit of an audiobook is primarily multitasking.

I do want to offer one counterpoint.

There are some books written today that were made in collaboration with its audiobook counterpart.

I loved the Rankin & Bass versions of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, and I still love the story and the music, much better than the Peter Jackson versions, but I do acknowledge that the animation makes the characters look like they were hit with an ugly stick.

Rankin Bass Hobbit is my personal favorite adaption of the hobbit specifically because I adore the art style. It's like I am watching an animated medieval painting. I really like how humanoids just look genuinely bizarre and by the time you are used to the stylism of the different races, humans show up in the third act of the movie. Humans look so normal compared to everything else that they are kind of grotesque which I think is a great effect.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/0/0ae6a0a0.jpg

But it is still kind of bad because of some really awful and distracting censorship, some bizarre editing and lackluster storyboarding.

Back in 2014 the term "cancel culture" was coined by progressive voices to describe a subset of toxic behavior. They did this because it was obviously not helpful. Conservative voices then appropriated the term as a blanket away to discredit any kind of progressive activism.

Now conservatives, convinced that they own the culture, are fully embracing "cancel culture" purely as a power trip.

Really hard to rank developer teams. You can have a great team with hundreds of talented people and it only takes 1 to fuck it all up.

Like a CEO that is just some nepo-failson, or a writer that is just painfully unfunny. Borderlands 3 dialog was terrrrrible. Such a shame, writing funny dialog was like 0.00001% of the work that needed to be done but it soured the whole thing. Also, the infinite gun mechanic just didn't matter to me at all?

Valve has a great studio, but that might be because they aren't a public company that lights itself on fire. Everyone in charge there built the company. They don't give a shit if something they do loses them money in the short-term, and they don't squeeze the life out of their IPs. The best studios always have someone protecting them from the higher-ups ruining everything.
If it simplifies things I am ranking them on the quality of their game library not their internal politics.

This is just for fun.

Here are the rules:

  1. No one hit wonders. Said game studio needs to have released at least 3 quality games and they would be judged as a whole. So no "Released one excellent game and two dogwater games". CD Projekt Red fails to make the list because as far as I am concerned they've only made one, arguably two, quality games.
  2. IP diversity is encouraged. It is not an automatic disqualify them but it does weigh against them if their entire thing is just making one series of games. Perfect example is Team Aces who only makes Ace Combat and nothing else.
  3. No generic in house devs for major publishers. So no Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Square-Enix, Capcom, Konami, Bandai-namco, etc. The reason why is because they tend to shuffle staff and dev structure so often that they can't really be judged as a whole.
  4. But second party studios of major publishers are allowed. Intelligent systems, Sucker Punch, Rare, Obsidian are all eligible.

With that in mind here's what I have so far:

From Software
Treasure
Sucker Punch
Insomniac
Naughty Dog
Level-5
Monolith (both of them)
Bungie
Genki
Clover Studios
Platinum Games
Rare
Obsidian

I need more suggestions!

My favorite phone game I've ever played is PlayOneRace. An elegantly designed racing game with exactly two controls, left and right. You touch the left side of the screen to left and touch the right side of the screen to turn right. The length of your press increases how sharply you turn and the game is all about mastering your ability to turn.

No microtransactions or anything like that, just a good game.

Most likely no because there isn't much reason to.

The ONLY planet we could reasonably colonize is Mars and although technically possible it is a VERY tall ask.

For planets outside this solar system, we just encountered a new problem that will prevent us from leaving. The outer reach of the solar system is blazing hot because our sun and orbiting planets were protecting us from space radiation.

So we would need to find a way around that.

I think he knew and didn't care.

Hate groups are often open and knowingly self contradictory but they just decided that they don't care.

Dealing with many narcissists IRL, a key characteristic is that they have a distinct lack of self reflection. They legitimately do not bother to think about who they are, what they do, why they do what they do or how what they do affects others. They just don't care about any of that. So when they contradict themselves, they don't bother to care because being self contradictory doesn't mean anything to them.

Yep, that too. You draw a character model once, then just copy-paste them and move them as needed for each scene they're in, as opposed to needing to draw each scene. For studio-wide workflow, this means you can have multiple people working on different scenes with the same character at once without having to worry about different drawing styles creating inconsistencies between scenes, since none of the people doing the animating will be redrawing the character.

You bring up a good point that 3D scales up a lot better for large productions.

Realistically if there was ever "The Purge" irl then people would be safer than they are now because people would organize themselves into groups to keep themselves safe.

As opposed to now where people are expected to depend on police to keep themselves safe and communities taking their safety into their own hands is considered vigilantism, terrorism or gang activity.

CG isn't necessarily cheaper (if you look at the budgets for Disney animated films, the 3D stuff generally has higher budgets than contemporary 2D stuff), but it is more consistent and the skills are easier to learn/train. Hand-drawn animation is hard, and there simply aren't that many people out there capable of doing it. That limits what can be made and can make things less predictable, which isn't desirable. With 3D, they can run more projects simultaneously and reliably find people capable of animating the directors' visions.

Remember that the biggest concern with corporate art production is often not quality so much as it is consistency/predictability. Executives don't want to gamble on producing something that might be amazing but also might not, they want to produce something that will almost certainly be decent and yield a predictable return on shareholders' investments.

The primary benefit of 3D animation is that it is a lot easier to reuse assets and edit.

If a scene comes out a certain way but test screenings didn't like it, it's a lot easier to go reanimate a scene than to redraw a scene. It gives creators a lot more flexibility.

The 2D equivalent of 3D animation is, of course, Family Guy style animation where characters are very stiffly modeled and posed and every single angle is the same so that they can be reused and re-edited.

But most importantly it launched at a 50 dollar pricepoint to match this.

Right now I am still boycotting 2k but I think this is a very positive direction for game development to go in.

I also think the desire for long games is hurting games by filling them with needless padding.

Games deserve to have good pacing.

This whole "I need value for what I buy" thing is just consoomer mindset. Most of you aren't playing the whole 48 hours the game requires.

Whenever AAA games are truly short like Devil May Cry or Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, nobody minds. I certainly don't because I can just play again.

Musicians didn't fall off, the industry did. They force everything they put on the radio to have mass appeal through a handful of specific songwriters who are experts at producing hits.

A clear cut example of this is when kpop really took off for a moment. I get kpop is not everyone's cup of tea but it was at least fresh and unique as far as pop goes.

But then after it took off, kpop industry got itself involved with American music producers and the kpop started to sound like everything else.
