That's a good way to put it. The bots back then were just primitive compared to the ones we see these days. Weapons weren't nearly as powerful, but some of them looked just as destructive simply because armor was also weaker then too.

Some bots from the old days did manage to do a good job at modernizing themselves though. Warhead, Complete Control, Nightmare, and Son Of Whyachi all had decent success in the rebooted BattleBots, as did Behemoth, Terrorhurtz, and Storm2 in the rebooted Robot Wars. In fact, Behemoth had its best performance ever in the last season of the RW reboot before the show sadly got cancelled again.
