Here's the thing you're misunderstanding: Pokemon doesn't attract new adult fans. It pretty much only attracts younger fans (who don't understand all of the flaws in the games that the adults are complaining about) and then either keeps those fans interested into adulthood or has some of those former kid fans come back later as adults looking for a nostalgia hit like when Pokemon Go first came out.

Look at all of the Pokemon clones like Temtem and Nexomon that have come out in the past few years but haven't gotten much traction. They don't have the marketing or resources to match the massive Pokemon juggernaut in terms of attracting younger fans, but the monster catching genre just inherently doesn't attract older fans who don't already have that Pokemon nostalgia in them. Their only real market is kids whose parents are too poor to afford premium $60 Pokemon titles but still want to get their kid something similar and lapsed Pokemon fans who have escaped the stockholm syndrome, dropped the franchise, and looked for an alternative. And even then, most of those lapsed Pokemon fans would just go play fanmade ROM hacks of older Pokemon games instead of an offbrand alternative like Temtem or Nexomon.

It would take the Pokemon franchise completely and royally fucking up beyond all belief for any competitor to come even remotely close to matching it. I'm talking "the Electric Soldier Porygon episode of the anime giving 700 kids seizures but what if those 700 kids actually died" levels of completely and royally fucking up, and I'm not even sure if that would do the trick at this point. It's basically too big to fail at this point.
Yeah. You and others have raised good points. It will just never be a franchise for me.

I was born in 86, and I never liked handheld gaming. So when I was in high school playing around with emulation I found SMT as I was specifically looking for Japanese RPGs without a US release as I wanted to play stuff I felt had been withheld from me.
