In Mario Kart, you race against other racers. Just because you can throw items and fly with gliders doesn't stop it from being a racing game. In Splatoon, you shoot other players with guns. Just because your gun shoots ink and the main objective is to paint the turf doesn't stop it from being a shooting game. In Smash, you fight against other fighters. Just because you can jump around on platforms and the win condition is to knock your opponents off the stage doesn't stop it from being a fighting game.

Just because a game doesn't play exactly like every other game in the genre doesn't mean it isn't a game of that genre. How is this so hard for people to comprehend?
