In 2016, both parties had populist candidates that the establishments did not want to win. The RNC didn't or couldn't get rid of Trump. The DNC did everything in its power to shove Bernie out of Hilary's path. The problem was that too many of the common people weren't interested in Hilary for a variety of reasons. And while I know that Hilary won the overall popular vote, she got less votes than Obama in 2012 (and almost 4 million less than Obama in 2008) while Trump got 2 million more than Romney.
