making a very rough analogy, this was more like a House election than anything more major. it was elections for very local representatives and for regional mayors. not to do with overall country control, the councillors elected don't get any vote on legislation, but very much a leading indicator for how the major elections will go.

labour are the comparatively left major party (democrat) and conservatives are the comparatively right major party (republican, but like the GOP they've swung much farther right than they were 10-15 years ago). This result is basically like if the republicans got slaughtered in the House, but a large number of those seats went to Greens or independents or other minor parties instead of to the Democrats
