My thoughts on ben, ignoring the claim and such, is that on day 3 for scum to be the catalyst that opens the lynch door up beyond the town that basically everyone thinks it's scum, is super risky. You can get caught in that crossfire!

But being down 2 members means they have to take risks. And scum Ben loves chaos. He certainly caused some! I don't remember if corrik had claimed vanilla by that point, but there is definitely scum equity in getting the day rolling so that you can get more info from claims, which wouldn't happen if we simply ride the lazy river to Corrik Beach.
