That doesn't eliminate expression and personality, just refines it to what makes sense. The Novelty still persists.

That being said, there is the initial impression of a more varied, open problem-solving novelty that is lost with depth. This is true of any competition of significant potential depth, given enough investment, but it does adjust the parameters of what the typical player puts into chess. You start with that problem-solving joy, but if you go far enough, all of that is trivialized and put to the wayside. The arithmetic doesn't turn into calculus, it turns into a hard drive capacity contest.

Yeah I imagine being a 900-1000 rating is where things are fun, in any game I actually get good at, I just become miserable and miss the days of my noobness.

Chess though I think has to be rough, because theres no execution aspect to it as well, so its all just knowing the game
