You said the space battle scenes seem the same. My explanation was why they might seem that way.

You're the one the first brought up that particular space battle as a difference. It's got the same motivation, the same set up, the same result, what about it do you view as vastly different beyond it's longer and has more action?

It's the corner that Abrams used TFA to paint TLJ into. Johnson had to figure a way for TLJ to get out, and he did.

Yep! That's why I view TFA as the original sin of the sequel trilogy.

It was her connection to Vader that made many keep their distance, even when Leia told of the growing threat posed by the First Order. IIRC, the Resistance was former members of the Rebel Alliance who were willing to join.

That explains why Leia is in just a small group in TFA not TLJ. After the UN/New Republic has been decapitated, why is the rest of the world/galaxy just surrendering to North Korea/First Order when they don't have their super weapon any more? Flocking to Leia or outright declaring independence seems for fitting for that set up.

The books led Luke to discover the history of the Jedi, the nature of the Force, and the relation of the Jedi to the Force. Luke's time with Obi-Wan and Yoda was essentials only; they didn't have time to give him history lessons. Yoda told Luke that knowledge needed to be passed on [to Rey], even if Luke didn't like the idea of it being done without the guidance Luke believed was needed but not available [due to him not being willing to do that guiding].

If it's not apparent from the movie why the Jedi texts are important then they are not important to the movie. The author of the book can get credit for creatively using the set up from the TLJ.
