You know damn well you're adopting that cat and working an extra few shifts for Door Dash.

My nieces say they'll take responsibility, but I told them they need to get jobs in order for us to keep her. I'm already paying all expenses and adding the cost of another cat's needs isn't something I can comfortably do.

To clarify on what the shelter did, they scanned her for a chip, weighed her, then told me they'd T&R and let her loose again about a mile away from my home. But I didn't want her to be released again, I want her to have a home.

maybe put up some posters see if any one in your area is missing a cat

I just got back from the shelter about 30 minutes ago and this cat is not chipped. I told my nieces that we would house the cat until either we find a place that will take her in to be adopted, or we can keep her if, as previously said, they both get jobs to (finally) help out.
