(fake)Verso spends the entire game trying to find a way to kill himself and in the end Maelle repaints him to be an old(er) piano playing party dog because she naively believes he will be happy as long as he can (maybe) die of natural causes one day (assuming Maelle doesnt just repaint him to be younger again). Ignoring the cruelty of that, Aline and Maelle are both demonstrated to be addicts, and in Maelle's ending we see the painting corruption / sickness taking hold of her so its implied she will not be able leave on her own despite her compromise with Renoir.

I think both outcomes are negative endings, but at least in Verso's ending we know at least 1 party member manages to survive and that (real)Verso's soul is allowed to finally rest.

He spends the game trying to kill literally everyone but Alicia, and if you pick him, youre accomplishing that goal.

In Versos ending, one party member survives to live a life in a scarred body without the ability to speak while her birth family continues to neglect her as they focus on the conflict with the Writers. The rest of the party doesnt even exist anymore, and you are in fact sacrificing all but that one of them and their entire world deliberately to achieve this outcome.

In Maelles ending, the only ones who suffer are fake Verso (and the last piece of real Verso) and the rest of the Dissande family, and everyone else gets to live and have a chance at happiness.

Neither outcome is really good, but Ill take the utilitarian route and pick the one where a handful of privileged people suffer for the sake of the many rather than literal genocide for the sake of the privileged few.

I dont think you can know both outcomes and really even consider picking Verso without dehumanizing the beloved characters you spent the game with as not real or otherwise not considering them sentient beings. Hell, the Dissandes are all real, but theyre all at least in part toxic assholes to Alicia, who Versos ending condemns to a life with them.
