So first off, don't use Chrome. Ever. 2025 Chrome is trash that's tailor-made to feed you ads.

Second, as mentioned, Firefox + uBlock Origin will solve 99.9% of your problems, and you can transfer bookmarks pretty easily, especially if you have it on desktop.

AdGuard for those on iOS

I use 1Block, not familiar with AdGuard. 1Block works great although blocking elements got a lot more annoying because it doesn't do it directly in Safari anymore.

Google has basically declared war on ad blockers. They've updated Chrome's backend to basically disable all but the most primitive ad blocking, and while it's just Chrome for now it's likely it will propagate to Edge, Brave, and other browsers that are based on the Chromium codebase. Then there's Youtube, where they're trying to block user access if they detect an ad blocker.

Also, I think you're underestimating how tech illiterate most people are. Many people don't realize ad blockers even exist, and trying to explain it to some of them will just give answers like "it works fine leave it" even after you tell them that ads are one of the main sources of malware.
