Nevermind the fact that his stats are inflated because he played most of his career during the dead puck era on a trap team.

This was always the classic excuse. And yet. HERE HE IS AGAIN. Anyway, I can't speak for the other finals, but the Smythe that Giguere got was an absolute joke. Brodeur was COMPLETELY robbed in 2003.

Gonna ignore the rest of the post?

Anyways, I acknowledged that Broduer is top 5, probably top 3, of all time AND that he is playing amazing right now. But so did Hasek at the same age. And what I said was that his CAREER stats benefit from the fact that he played during a much lower scoring era than Roy, which you cannot deny, and that he played on an elite team, which Hasek did not.

I have no idea how you can place Brodeur above either Roy or Hasek. Absolutely no clue. Hasek destroys almost any other goalie in his prime. He won 6 Vezina's and 2 Hart's (the only goale in history to ever win multiple Hart's). Brodeur has 4 won Vezina's and 0 Hart's. Roy is without a doubt the best playoff performer ever at any position and destroys Brodeur in playoff stats. Roy won 3 Conn Smythe's (the most in HISTORY) while Brodeur has won 0. Roy also beat Brodeur the one time they faced off in the playoffs when Colorado beat New Jersey in 7 games in the 2001 Cup finals. Hasek and Roy also put on the best 2 goalie performances EVER (Roy as a ROOKIE in '86 single handidly carrying the Canadiens to a Cup and Hasek in '98 single handidly winning the Gold medal in the Olympics for the Czech Repbulic). Hasek also holds the highest save percentage of all time, the best goals against average during the modern era and, up until last year, the highest save percentage ever during a single season. He also playd on a terrible team for most of his career while Brodeur and Roy played on elite teams. I love Brodeur but he just doesn't come close to the dominance of either Roy or Hasek. Nevermind the fact that his stats are inflated because he played most of his career during the dead puck era on a trap team.

I wouldn't say the Devils were elite. They were very good. Brodeur made them elite. Without him, they don't have three cups and five finals appearances. His regular season WINS record is amazing. Low scoring doesn't affect that, just GAA. And let's not pretend that Roy played for scrub teams. The Habs and Avs had PLENTY more offensive talent than the Devils could have ever dreamed of.

Trophies are awarded subjectively by biased media and GMs. Statistics speak for themselves.

Giguere's Smythe WAS a robbery. Brodeur's stats were JUST as good in those playoffs, and his team actually won. He literally got punished for having been good before, the voters found him boring so they gave it to Giguere because he was a better story because he came out of nowhere.

Giguere and Brodeur were pretty equal during the 2003 playoffs (and Brodeur outplayed Giggy in the finals), but I think they gave it to Giggy because the Ducks were a far worse team than New Jersey. Putting up slightly better stats on a much worse team gave was what got him the Smythe. He was pretty amazing though - allowing only 1 goal against during the WCF was ridiculous (even if it was the Wild) and sweeping the Wings (who were the defending champs) was impressive. I don't see how it was a robbery though.

Brodeur playing behind Stevens/Daneyko/Niedermayer/Rafalski and with Elias/Gionta/Gomez/Niewendyk/Langenbrunner/Pandolfo up front (plus Madden as the defensive forward beast), I really don't think you have much of a case saying Brodeur was just playing on a "very good" team. The Devils have been stacked ever since they won their first cup.

Right, I'm not trying to say that Giguere was lousy or anything of the short. He had a GREAT run. But as you said, it was basically even, except that Brodeur played better in the finals and, you know, actually won the cup.

IMHO, you don't give the Smythe to someone on a losing team unless they really clearly outplay everyone on the team that won, and Giguere absolutely did NOT do that. As I said, Brodeur got punished because it wasn't as good of a story because he was already well known as being great and the Devils were a better team. Completely ridiculous.

Well I think the fact that the series went to 7 games had something to do with it. I mean, if the Devils win in 4 or 5 then I think Brodeur gets the Smythe for sure. I also think that Giggy was more valuable to his team than Brodeur was.

So, the Colorado Avalanche with Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg weren't elite? The Red Wings weren't elite? Let's not act like Roy and Hasek played their entire careers on lousy teams.

In 2003, when Brodeur was getting robbed of the Smythe, Patrick Roy, SURROUNDED by elite players, got retired by Andrew Brunette and a bunch of no-talent scrubs.
