If the delivery driver isn't getting compensated properly for his serves, then raise his wage. If you have to raise the prices of your food to do so, then so fucking be it.

I wish I could start a business where I didn't have to pay my employees, and they wont even mad at me for not paying them a livable wage, they'll be angry at my customers instead. That sounds like a sweet deal for me.

As an ex delivery driver, it depends on the amount of stuff and distance. If you order 6 2 liters and a large pizza, give the guy an extra buck, especially if you live up stairs. I would be very content if every person gave two bucks. Even a dollar if the person looked like they could not afford to tip would go a long way.

If nothing else, can we all agree that tipping based on a percentage of the order is a nonsense way to go about it? Why should the driver get tipped more just because I ordered a large pizza with everything on it, instead of a medium 1 topping? Either way that driver is doing the same amount of work. Even if I order 3 or 4 pizzas, they aren't made of lead, having to carry a few more at a time shouldn't entitle you to 3-4 times the tip.

I would agree. I saw a lot of people trying to do fancy math and percentages all the time as a driver, really, depending on distance 2-3 bucks is amazing, any more than that and it was a preferred customer.

You do pay for it. I've never ordered a pizza for deliver that didn't tack on a delivery fee. Why the hell am I paying extra for delivery if that fee isn't going to the delivery driver?

The delivery fee usually does not go directly to the delivery guy. He might get as little as 5% of that fee to help pay for his vehicle's fuel and maintenance. The fee covers the rising cost of ingredients, hourly wages for employees other than the drivers, the store's automobile insurance for non-owned vehicles and all other business expenses. It shouldn't be considered a payment to the delivery guy for their service. Ask the delivery guy if he gets any of the fee.

Nothing!

I love the American culture of tipping almost everyone for anything :D

I tip my barber, cos he's self employed and he's done my hair 25 years and that's it. Everyone else is picking up a minimum wage.

In England we get charged for delivery (typically £1.50 per order) to me, that's the tip and it's mandatory. Balls to giving them even more.

Most food delivery workers, like bartenders and servers, don't make minimum wage in the US. It's expected they'll make tips to make up for it. It's possible for them to make a lot more that way, with cash tips usually being untaxed as well.

I know the delivery fee doesn't go to the driver, but you didn't explain what it is there for. Why would a pizza cost more to make if you are delivering it than if it is take out? Its the same ingredients. Its the same hourly employees making it. The only reasonable explanation is that it would cost more because you have to pay a guy to drive it out to your house, but apparently that's not what its for since they expect you to make up that difference on your own when once he gets to your house.

I've never tipped for pizza, and it always arrives in the typical 30-40 minutes. If they are doing to something to contaminate it, it isn't working, because it always still tastes delicious.

Depending on the store and driver. The inside people did not care if the driver's get tipped or not, the driver may end up taking the delivery last if they are on a multiple run or just not take care of it like they normally would, but I highly doubt many people would risk jail for fucking with someone's food.

I've worked in the fast food industry for almost a decade now, and that is basically the general attitude. No matter how often movies and tv shows portray the idea of spitting in a customers food as a punchline, in the real life it is no laughing matter. To say that behavior is not tolerated is an understatement. The places I've worked would write you up for just joking about spitting in a customers food. They make it very clear that not only is it instant grounds for termination, but they can and will report you to the police so charges can be brought against you.

While this zero tolerance attitude obviously won't deter every single person from committing the act, you can generally rest assured that no matter how much you piss off the person preparing your food, they more than likely wouldn't dare spit it.

You're pretty terrible for not tipping, but I will say that whenever I see an order for someone I know doesn't tip, I take their order last. It's especially fun when they ask for cheese and peppers and tell them I don't have any on me when I always do.

Or if I get the pleasure of taking their order, I tell them our delivery time is something absurd like 2 hours and I make sure they don't get any good deals if they still want delivery.

They wanna waste my time by not tipping, I'm gonna waste theirs.

Ok? Do you not understand though that if suddenly restaurant owners have to increase all of their labor costs that food prices will go up dramatically? Restaurants have a difficult enough time turning a profit as it is.

So? If they can't operate while offering a fair wage, they don't deserve to operate at all. Remember, other countries with a definite minimum wage have takeout too.
