I've noticed a lot of people seem to think less of the game now. It could just be a vocal minority that I've seen though.

That's surprising because I still think the gameplay was pretty much amazing as well. I've played games with a great story. This matched it in gameplay as well.

It's one of my top 10 or I guess 15 games ever for sure.

Eh, I walked away with more favorable feelings toward the gameplay than I did toward the story.

Mostly because they botched the ending so badly (which is somehow apparently an unpopular opinion, but whatever. I don't feel like arguing about that again).

Don't get me wrong I enjoy the gameplay and still consider it one of the best games out there.

I could just honestly take the story by itself; that's what really sold the game for me.

The best example of that was probably from the DLC, when I really just kind of wanted to skip the combat parts to get back to Ellie/Riley exploring an abandoned mall

My issues are mainly with the story. The presentation is top notch but the story itself was predictable, and I also did not like the ending. I won't go into spoilers but the dilemma they try to set up does not work.

The gameplay is incredible and beautiful. So simple yet so powerful. Not to mention the online mode which is still the best console online game.

The story is also amazing. Ending still holds up. But I guess games have had better stories since then so it didn't age as well. You definitely missed something if you didn't like the ending.

It's not about the emotional angle, it's about the logical angle. When you stop to think about it, there's no dilemma.

I would save my wife and screw the world over every time. I would even it do it against her wishes and lie to her about it just like Joel did. And that was a parent-child connection. I can't blame him

The latter is how I felt. The gameplay was frustrating at times when you had to be stealthy since it seemed inconsistent. And when you were trying to be stealthy, Ellie would be running around like a crackhead which was super distracting. Eventually I would just try a couple times towards the end and then go fuck it and watch a YouTube video to see the easiest route. It didn't seem worth it to me to struggle through all of those.

But I absolutely loved any actual combat and the storyline. Just fuck those stealth segments.

Have we gone back to 2004 lately? All I seem to see at the moment is this pretentious and superior attitude towards "casuals" in various different fields, like how "casual gamers" used to be treated like demon spawn way back when. I thought it was something we'd moved past.

Yeah the game is absolutely amazing

In many games, either the story ends up getting in the way of the gameplay (mgs4) or the gameplay ends up getting in the way of the story, mostly by ruining pacing (Mass effect)

The third/fourth options are completely getting rid of either story (rocket league) or gameplay (I guess visual novels)

Last of us was unique in that I think none of the above happened. The two worked together to create a greater experience

And yeah it could have been a little nice to have control over the ending choice, but that's the downside of having actual characters that aren't simple stand-ins for the player

I prefer not having the choice. It wasn't a role-playing game (I guess). We were playing Joel's story, and even though I was surprised at first by the ending I can't say it didn't make sense or that it was strange. Maybe it's because I know the real ending, but I think it would run counter to the game itself if I had the chance to make Joel give up Ellie.

Loved the ending, got bored by the gameplay, played it for about four hours then switched to a highlight lets play and had a much better time with it. The one thing it did right was the lethality of guns in person v person combat that stuff was intense, but the horror meets puzzle layout of the mutie threat was 90's crap stealth game to me.
