While a general crash is a little out there, the state of video game AAA sequels is obviously in question. The big third party sequels all seem to be down lately.

It still could be. Depends on how CoD and Battlefront 2 do, I think.

Edit: though checking back, the first SWBF didn't sell as well as Madden, so I dunno. Hmm, Destiny 1 didn't sell as well as Madden either. Yeah, Destiny 2 basically guaranteed not to be in the top 2. Wonder what the worldwide numbers would look like?

1. Around 30% of the original Destiny's sales were digital. I doubt Destiny 2 is that much higher, percentage wise?
2. The original Destiny never came out on PC
3. (to another post) the vast majority of Destiny 1's sales were on PS4 and XB1. Plus, the PS4 and XB1 userbase is way bigger now than it was when Destiny 1 came out.

I mean, Destiny 2 had the most game one day sales on the Playstation Store ever so it's definitely gonna be higher percentage wise (also Destiny 1 was in the high 20's in terms of percentage of sales digitally).

I suspect digital sales are noticeably more than Destiny 1. Digital sales in general has increased a lot over the past 3 years. I dont nevessarily think its enough to make up the deficit but I also dont think these numbers are any kind of cause for alarm.

They account for digital in the article. It would be a 40% drop even with a substantial increase in digital downloads. Also, it's available on two fewer platforms, soon to be one.

Destiny 2 won't make the top 3 worldwide, easily. PUBG, CoD, Battlefront, Pokmon, Mario, should all sell more.

Just to get into the numbers a little, Destiny sold 6.3 million month one. These numbers would suggest around 3 million sales, which is also worse than the first month sales of Breath of the Wild and Ghost Recon Wildlands.

I think there are a lot of parallels to the film industry

There is still a market for AAA titles, but they are way riskier than they use to be with the flood of good Indy and F2P titles out there.
